A light flush decorated Nanami’s cheeks as she settled down next to Noelani. “You’re welcome. I wanted to share more of my world with you before you left for Matori.” The very words felt like a stone was sinking in her chest, but Ami smiled through the pain. She just hoped that her expression wouldn’t falter because she did not want to make Noelani upset and so Ami focused on the beauty of the cavern ceiling to ease the twisting emotions. Maybe this trip was slightly selfish since she thought that the sight would help her, the nostalgic feeling almost a comfort despite the looming separation from her new friend. “If you stayed longer then I would keep surprising you, but I suppose it’s not fair to keep you or your companion from returning home.”

“Ami.” The name was like a whisper, Noelani reaching over to lace their fingers together as she leaned against her companion for support. Even if Nanami tried to hide the pain, Noelani could feel the sorrow that came from the other girl. “You have no idea how tempting that offer is, truly.” She rested her head against the Kawena’s shoulder. “But I have to go see my family as well and I can’t simply disappear into these islands forever, no matter how tempting they are.” As tempting as the thought was she couldn’t get the idea of her family’s sorrow out of her mind either, especially since knowing her own mother’s story and wondering about the family that surely had missed her over all of those years of separation. It was one thing to relocate, but another thing to simply disappear without saying goodbye. That was why today was so important because she didn’t want to simply disappear from Nanami’s life either. “We do have a habit of running into one another, so why not think about this as a break before we return to the same place in the future?” She mused with a small smile despite the twisting of her heart at the words. “Could you not come to Matori with me?”

The temptation was so strong. Nanami had to take a breath to calm herself as she rested against Noelani’s side. “One day.” She found herself promising. “If you don’t ever come back to Kahi then I’ll come to Matori.” She nodded at the thought. “I just have a few things to figure out here before I leave, but I will find you.” How could she not go to Matori when she knew that she had such a dear friend waiting for her across the ocean? They could share the same night sky and then one day they would find each other in the same waters again. “But when I do find you again, I’ll steal you from your family with their blessing.”

Noelani chuckled at the teasing. “That sounds like a plan.” She couldn’t help the smile that crossed her lips. “If you can get my family’s blessing then I suppose I’ll have to let you steal me away though I don’t plan on being tied down to any certain location. There’s simply too many adventures and treasures to find.” The hybrid closed her eyes for a moment, thinking, and then opened them again. “If neither of us find romance by then I suppose we’ll have to truly consider what our future holds, right?” Noelani wasn’t exactly certain what her heart wanted yet, but she wanted to find her path first as a treasure hunter first. If anything at least she knew that she had a true friend in the Kawena who was sharing this beautiful moment with her.

Nanami nodded, her fingers tightening around Noelani’s hand as she studied the ceiling. “I think that works for me. We both have so many more adventures to have and then if fate allows our paths will cross again.” She smiled, finding some comfort in the fact that they would find each other again in the future even if romance didn’t follow them, at least she had a dear friend. So for now she would just enjoy the rest of their day together, the pair of them both preparing for the next destination along their own separate journeys.
