So she wasn't upset? She didn't seem upset. Kayde scanned Elka's face, his insecurity not quite letting him register that the smile on her face and the laugh on her lips was a promising reaction to his botched attempt to ask her to marry him.
The Leaf took a deep breath. "Uh, yeah, right. Sorry." No, he was just ruining it even more. This was something that only happened, hopefully, once in a person's lifetime. He had never been a very romantic man. There were no flowers on the sand, no shells arranged in a sentimental manner. The sun shone directly overhead. There was nothing special about this moment besides the ring in his palm. Looking down at it, he was hit with how important such a small thing was. She clearly didn't need anything special. She never really did. She took him as he was, foolish man that he is.
Taking another deep breath, Kayde picked up the ring, holding it in two fingers so the blue gem twinkled as his hand shook. "Elka." A hard swallow. "Would you be my wife?"
