While Asa had no proof that his illness was inherited, he also couldn’t say that the reverse was true. The very idea of having a child who could only watch their brothers fussing and picking at one another, running off at festivals and living full lives, made his heart ache. Or worse; watching one suffocate and pass before they reached their first nameday.

“More children with Sargsyan crystals will be harder to hide,” He murmured. As she tucked the hair behind his ear, Asa lifted his eyes to look into hers. It was always hard to tell where exactly his wife was looking, but he’d learned enough by watching her mannerisms to guess. “They could be sick, you could be alone with three…” He sighed and wrapped his arms around her waist. It was always the same worries, the same tired lines, but the anxiety never went away.

“Would it surprise you to know I have been thinking about it? Just…in passing, but I always get scared and I stop.”

Ygraine knew that Asa meant the observation as a warning, another point in the 'we shouldn't do this' category - but in truth, she felt her mind tumbling along the road of 'if we had another child, what pieces of Asa would have been preserved this time?' Would she have another who had his beautiful spattering of crystals, or one that had is silky straight hair? Those beautiful yellow-gold eyes?

It only made her want it more fiercely, foolish though that may be, but she wisely kept her mouth shut, and instead smiled at him softly, melting a bit into his embrace. He had the sparklers in his hand, a bit awkwardly poking at her, but she didn't want him to pull away so she ignored it.

But...yes, she was very much surprised at his next words, enough that she gasped and leaned back a little just to look at him. He'd always been so adamantly opposed; he was such a good father, and loved his kids so fiercely, but he'd always been cautious at the prospect of bringing another into the world. But he'd really considered it?

"What do you think they'd look like?" She blurted out, before she could stop herself. "I keep wondering what you'd be like with a daughter. Ohh, I think you'd spoil her rotten."

He was hoping that maybe she would be the one to slow down and take this as a hint to think about things. While he wasn’t putting his foot down completely, Asa was hoping to deter his wife for a little bit. Maybe with some more time he could grow used to the idea or at least used to talking about it without immediately feeling worried. Oh, but he should have known better.

He’d dangled something infront of her that he really shouldn’t have. If he’d played it closer to his chest then maybe Asa could have edged his way carefully back into the topic at a later date, but now she was far too excited for that. “A daughter?” What would a daughter even look like? He imagined a fair bit like Colm, actually, and with curls like her mother… He sighed with a little breathless laugh and rolled his eyes ruefully. “Our sons are spoiled so it goes without saying that a daughter would be as well. If the stories Sol told me about you as a child are true then I worry about what a daughter would bring to our lives.”

Chaos. Sheer chaos, was what a daughter would bring about. "Oh, they were true, love. I was quite a menace before you tamed me." Ygraine agreed, breathlessly, smiling at her husband brightly. It was enough just to hear that little laugh, enough to see that he did want it, even if he had reason to pause. She beamed at him, then stepped back a bit, plucking one of the sparklers from the hand that was resting on the small of her back, slipping so they were standing hip to hip now, with the sparkler extended. "You can make flame, yes? Be a dear and light this for me?" She pulled him in a bit closer and rest her cheek against the top of his head.

She knew it wasn't an agreement, but she felt content enough to have brought the topic up, and to know that it was possible. She'd hoard as many tiny pieces of Asa to herself as she could, given the chance.

Tamed. Bah; as if it anyone ever could. If Ygraine had ever been reigned in it was only because she chose to be. With a snap of his fingers a little flame bounced from Asa to the tip of the sparkler, and with a magic all it’s own it came to life.

While he knew it would take time to come around to the idea, Asa knew he was a weak man at his core. It was one thing to be able to deny himself the excitement of raising another child, and it was another to keep his wife from it. The same worries that plagued him for their sons would no doubt consume him for any future children, but he just didn’t care around Ygraine. It was dangerous, that line of thinking; letting himself be too selfish was careless and cruel. She didn’t see it that way, though, so maybe he was wrong?

He'd never known true family before her and being a father was a gift he’d thought was a curse for so long. Growing up under Geir’s thumb had been a life of duty; live as long as possible, sire an heir and then die away from the eyes of others. Ygraine had already given him two heirs and still he lived, so what more was there? Why shouldn’t they be selfish? Or was that testing fate?

One more, he reasoned; one more time. A third child to add to their little family wouldn’t be so bad and if the worst came to be then they would cope as a family. He could only hope they never had to worry about such things.
