“What? Earth horses are weak, that’s disappointing. I could carry two of you,” he laughed. “I suppose we could take separate horses. If we must. I bet Atticus would enjoy a fair. I will, I’ve always liked them. A county fair sounds charming. I assume there will be plenty of food,” he said, searched Michael’s face for his answer, and then nodded when he deduced it was a fair assumption.
“I can’t believe you would judge me for critiquing your animals and then invite me to a fair where they critique the animals,” he laughed.
He could finish his project for Atticus in a bit; he didn’t seem too worried about it, and all of his supplies had been neatly laid out on the table so he could continue when he felt like it.
But, he caught Michael’s hand, and in the absence of leaning over to play with his hair, or kiss down his neck, he raised his hand to his lips and kissed the back of it.

Michael laughed softly at first, and then a bit more and shook his head in amusement because, well, Devyn had a point about him suggesting they see where others critique animals.
“Okay, okay,” he conceded. “I could always dust off my motorcycle,” he offered, smiling when Devyn took his hand to kiss.
Devyn was sweet. Attractive. Witty and had a sense of humor that Michael liked. Not everyone did, but Devyn knew when to tease and when to take a moment to back off. Michael was still a bit anxious about everything, but he figured with time things would get easier.
He cleared his throat after a moment and glanced around, as though he forgot where the kitchen was, or maybe where he was.
“Are you hungry? I could get you a snack if you’d like,” he offered, because he wasn’t sure if he should just join Devyn on the couch or not. He didn’t really have anything to offer other than company and conversation, but he’d also been the one to interrupt Devyn in the first place.

This time, Devyn didn’t laugh. He didn’t drop Michael’s hand, but as he lowered it from his lips he just smiled and brushed his thumb across the back of it.
“I’m not that hungry,” he promised, and tugged Michael’s hand just a little closer. “But, thank you. I’ve never been on a motorcycle, ever. If you’d like to take a ride, I’d go with you. Anywhere you wanted. But, I promise I’m not picky. Even if I do fuss a bit. I don’t feel like I have to go somewhere or do something to enjoy the time I have with you. Even just some time like this is nice. I’m not worried about boring you,” he admitted–because he couldn’t imagine losing interest in Michael and didn’t think they needed to be performative to keep each other entertained. “So I hope you never worry about that, either.”
It might have been nice to treat themselves to nice things, but the nicest thing he could have was Michael. Even if they could fuss over what to do together.
As if there needed to be anything at all. He could have laid on the ground with him and stared at the ceiling and been happy.

He felt silly. His heart was doing that weird thing where it was fluttering and his face felt hot. Devyn had never made him feel cornered or like he needed to do something. And he certainly didn’t think he would ever be bored with Devyn, even if they were just talking. Or sitting. Or doing anything or nothing.
Which was why he shook his head, wanting to make sure Devyn knew he wasn’t worried. Well. Maybe he had been a little worried about being boring, but Devyn’s reassurance was welcome and needed in a way that Michael was embarrassed to admit.
So, that was why Michael finally tugged his hand away from Devyn, but only so he could circle around the couch and take a seat next to him.
