Pax made a sound that might've been oh, if you really squinted; and, then, "I'd - I'd like that," in a tone that was a little weirdly defensive about the whole thing. As if they assumed she might take back that sometime.

"I'm around - I - I hang around here a lot," they said, carefully, working their way through the sentence like individual words had teeth. "Can be back here another - another time? Next week?"

"I'll come here again sometime," said Pendour, with a soft smile. "In a week or so. That sounds nice."

And they would talk about plants, and gardens, and all of those beautiful things.

For now, though, she turned to leave, as casually as she had walked up to say hello. "Until then, okay?" she said.

And then she was walking again, deeper into the park.
