Taijana kept an eye on Alfina out of the corner of her eye as they made their way downstairs and into the kitchen. The yaeli kept a modest space; hanging herbs hung from hooks in the ceilings, meat cured in a space out back and there was always something simmering for her active family to munch on. Now, however, Tai moved the bone broth off the fire to work on her mushroom soup instead.
As she gathered up her materials, she would catch glimpses of her daughter’s smile and one pulled at her own lips in turn. This was hopefully just a phase. Alfina was a bright girl, with a brighter future, and there was no way she would let something like this stand in her way. Humming a little song under her breath, Taijana playfully bumped her hip against her girls, gave a grin and went back to working on her soup with the song tapping on her lips.

While the dough sat, Alfina started mixing the cream. It was a soothing process. Comforting. So easy to forget the world when she could watch ingredients blend into one smooth, fluffy substance...
She looked up with surprise at the bump, taking a moment to remember. She was home, in the safe and cozy kitchen with her mother. The grin she saw managed to bring her own up to match. No one here ever made her feel worthless or stupid. She was lucky to grow up with such a family.
Speaking of family.... Her expression sobered up a little, but a faint, hopeful smile remained. "I want Xenia and Kitya to try these some day, too," she said softly. Though nervous to, she looked up to gauge her mother's reaction. "They'll be back to visit eventually.. right?" They wouldn't let some jerks talk to them like those boys had to her. They'd kick their butts.
She was not a kick butt kind of gal though... and she still worried the boys had been right.

Taijana’s knife stilled above the cutting board. For a moment she simply looked down at the larger chunks of mushrooms with her mind a million miles away. It was….still incredibly hard to talk about her daughters, but at the very least she knew that Kitya was safe. Just traveling, like her father before her, and she had to hold out hope that the gossip surrounding Xenia was just that; gossip. Lies spread about her blessed child because those horrid, nasty things just….well, they just couldn’t be true.
She wouldn’t believe it.
When she looked back to Alfina, though, the smile was still there, albeit softened a bit. “Of course they will, and I can guarantee they’ll eat so many of your puffs that they’ll look like puffs before the sun drops.”

It was a touchy subject amongst the family. For herself... while she was sad to be missing out on so much of her sisters' lives, she was still filled with admiration for them. They had gone off to do what they wanted. Followed their dreams. They had so much spunk and life. In her mind, there was no one who could bully her sisters.
Her eyes lowered back down to her work, that small but hopeful smile lingering through a soft chuckle. "They had better give me plenty of notice to get everything ready so they can have as much as they want." Hopefully they would be back. They would tell her if her puffs were bad or good. And... and seeing her mother's reaction to all the kids being home would be worth the wait.

Plenty of notice? She doubted that. If she’d learned anything about travelers, it was that you just needed to always have the staples on hand and hope they sent a letter before arrival. Sometimes she got word that Kieran was coming in weeks before he showed and others it would be when he came up the hill. Taijana simply smiled though and gave a little ‘hmm’. If it kept Alfina’s smile to think about then let her; it didn’t harm anything. She doubted that all of her children would be under the same roof once more, but…well, thinking about it didn’t harm anything either, did it?
