He blinked back his own tears but smiled at her and nodded as he took her hand. He didn’t mind if it was for luck or just because it felt nice. But he lifted a hand up to his ear to touch it for a moment.
“I’ve thought about earrings before. I like jewelry but… I mean, I don’t know,” he said quietly, because he wasn’t sure what was okay and what was just him being weird. He had one pair -- a magical pair -- that he shared with Elliot. But those just clipped onto his ear.
“I’m kind of afraid of needles,” he admitted with a sheepish smile. “I don’t like how they feel. I mean. I know it’s just a p***k. It’s not like… needles for stitches or IVs or anything like that.”
He gently took the blanket she’d put around his shoulders and tightened it a little. But also so he could rub at his arm, as if being haunted by pain of the past that was only in his memories now.
“I’ve worn those little stick-on earrings before,” he admitted, feeling a little silly about it, but they were fun while they lasted.
“I’m glad you met Elliot too,” he agreed. “You’re really nice. Oh, but please don’t steal anything. If you want something, you should put it on a list for your birthday or something,” he suggested because it was definitely safer than ending up in prison.

“Well, if you ever do decide to get them done, you have to let me know and I’ll go with you and help you while they’re healing and all of that, I think earrings are one of my favorite things, they can help you stand out and feel more like yourself and they’re really small and easy to hide from people who just want to take your things.”
It felt nice to be holding hands again, she liked physical contact when it was with someone she trusted, even though she wouldn’t admit it but.
“I’ll see about it, but man, Atticus…I’d have to wait until next May to get it…so how about I put it on a Christmas list instead…?” May was way too far out to think about, but December…wasn’t so far. She could think in terms of two ish months…but seven? Seven seemed to be asking for the moon.
Regardless, no matter how much time she had, she was quite pleased to just have this now.

Atticus nodded and smiled at her, although he was still rather nervous about getting them done. And he didn’t know if Elliot would like them, or if he would think they were weird.
Atticus also didn’t want to start getting picked on again at Azure when right now he was having such a good time. Being able to be a student and not worry about people making fun of him or hurting him was nice.
“Thank you. You’ll be the first I let know,” he promised, and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “Oh… yes, I forgot about Christmas,” he admitted, feeling a little silly for it. It had been years since he had anything special happen for Christmas. He didn’t like thinking about it. Although, he supposed it was going to be different this year.
“Okay, a Christmas list, then,” Atticus agreed with another smile.

“It’s pretty easy to forget, honestly. But. It’s still closer than my birthday, and I’ve celebrated…” Brooklyn wrinkled her nose, holding her fingers up in air quotes. “Christmas more than my birthday, so…” She shrugged. “I’ll do that.” Falling quiet, Brooklyn turned her attention back to the game, holding Atticus’s hand and feeling genuinely warm with the new jacket and the new friendship…
And the promise that they would still be friends…still be in contact in a few months.
There was no real certainty of anything but…
She hoped that this would be real. Would stay real.
