"Nu uh!" He grinned. Reaghan loved playing with his twin and seeing who could do better or go farther. It was like a competition but without a real drive to be better. At least in his eyes. He had no desire to be better than his brother, he just liked seeing who could do what. Although he did have a competitive streak when it came to the neighbor kids.

When he finally heard the actual words of his father and noticed both parents he offered a sheepish grin. "Can we please play here? Its fun!" Of course his brother took that chance to fall on his butt which caused Reaghan to snicker a bit before he pushed himself out onto the ice more before he tried to get up on his feet. He wanted to see if he could do any better. "We can all go skating!" He called up to his dad.

His attempt to get up on his feet ended up much the same as Eirex - with him landing on his butt. Reaghan laughed at it but his fall put all his weight on one spot and caused a crack in the ice. His laugh tapered down to a giggle before fully stopping as he heard something that made him look down between his legs. The ice was cracking more, spider webbing out from his point of impact.

Ergon stiffened up after both boys fell and picked up his pace. There was no crying out though, so that was good. "You heard your mother. We've got further to go before we stop. Get up before you soak your coats." Eirex was on his way back, but something was going on with Reaghan.

His eyes were locked on the boy while his other hand reached out for Eirex to take. The bit of ice at the water's edge crackled sharply under his feet, but surely that was just from it being the edge... "Keep coming, Eirex. Reaghan? Do you need help getting up?"

Eirex stuck out his lip with disappointment. Despite the promise of more fun ahead, his attention was on the present moment. He wanted to keep playing on the ice! He knew that he shouldn't push too much though. He pushed back onto his feet and looked back at Reaghan. "I'll get it next time," he assured confidently. It was a light-hearted sibling rivalry that he saw; more about pushing each other to do better for themselves than comparing each other. With Reaghan, he could always push a little more and go a little further.

Of course, his parents won overall still. With a long, dramatic sigh, he carefully made his way back to the shore. He glanced back and frowned when he realized Reaghan wasn't following. "Come on, Reaghan."

Riya finally managed to get right up beside Ergon. Though she let him handle getting Eirex since she didn't want to put added weight on the ice at the edge. She was smaller than Ergon but that didn't mean anything. She waited until her son was on solid ground before she reached out to him. "Come on. Is your coat soaked through?" She saw that he had some snow stuck in places on the outside so she wanted to make sure it hadn't melted and made the garment wet.

When she heard Ergon ask Reaghan if he needed help getting up she glanced up to look at her other son. She wasn't sure what he was looking at. Maybe he saw a fish move in the ice under him? "Come on Reaghan." She encouraged him to get moving.

He watched as the ice continued to send out small cracks, this way and that, his body completely still for a second. When it finally stopped and seemed to settle down he looked up at his parents. His dad had asked him if he needed help so he shook his head. "No. I can do it."

Reaghan looked down again and frowned at the ice before he shifted slightly so that he could get his legs under him again. This time he moved slowly so that when he did stand up he didn't fall. "Coming!" He called out to his mother, glancing up at her, to let her know he was on his way and not trying to be disrespectful.

But that cost him a second of concentration. Which resulted in him slipping again and losing his footing. One leg slid out and he fell down onto his knees. "Ouch." The way he had landed had hurt. But it also put another impact on top of the one he'd made before and the ice under him split all the way through. The cracking got worse and the noise of it made Reaghan's heart pause. With wide eyes he had enough time to look up at his dad and suck in a breath before the ice under him became too weak to hold him above the water.

Ergon felt Eirex's hand in his own with a sense of relief and tugged a little harder than he'd meant to. He just wanted his boys on solid ground. His attention went back to Reaghan and winced at yet another fall. His whole body froze when he heard another sharp crack of ice, but it wasn't under his feet this time.

One moment his son was visible, and then the next moment.. he was just gone. It took a split second for his heart to sink into his feet and his body burst into motion. "Keep Eirex here!" The ice crackled under his feet but he wasn't about to stop; never mind that he was more skidding along the surface than actually running anyway. Stopping wasn't an option. That burst from the solid ground was more than enough to keep his momentum going.

The memory scratched at his mind again, but he was too concerned to give in to that fear. He slid to his knees to grab the edge of the hole Reaghan had vanished into, his arm thrust into the freezing water. He couldn't feel anything, and the ice under him was starting to give way, too.

With half the sense to yank his coat off to keep it dry for later, he tossed it to the side and slid straight into the dark lake, eyes cracked to try seeing anything and arms sweeping everywhere.

Eirex gasped softly when he was yanked onto the ground, expression souring into a further pout. Father didn't have to be so rough... He looked at his mother and shook his head. "I'm fine, really." He looked down at his coat and brushed at the clinging snow.

What was that noise? He didn't realize anything was wrong until his father shouted. He spun with wide eyes, gaze darting between his father and... "Reaghan?" he called out, still more confused than anything else. Then Ergon was reaching into the water.. and he vanished as well. "Reaghan! Daddy!" he shrieked out. He tugged sharply at Riya's arm and looked at her with wide eyes. What was happening?

She gently winced when Ergon yanked Eirex off the ice. "Easy." She lightly scolded him. Though she gently took hold of her son and offered him a soft smile, petting down his hair with one hand and helping to brush the snow off him.

Riya looked up in time to see Reaghan fall again. She was about to tell him to take his time and just slide back over when he suddenly disappeared under the ice. "Reaghan!!" She screamed out, panic lacing her tone. The command to keep Eirex with her was met with her arms going around her son and pulling him close so that he couldn't go anywhere near the ice.

Her heart was pounding in her chest and her eyes filled with tears as she worried she had seen her other child for the last time. "Ergon?" She questioned when he started to take off his jacket. Then he went in too. "Ergon!!" Iriyana couldn't help! She had to keep Eirex from going after them. When she heard him scream for the other two she looked down at him before she simply picked him up. He might not be a baby anymore but holding him would bring her more comfort and she could make sure he didn't go running back onto the ice that way. "Shhh. Shh. Daddy will get him."

The moment he was in the water he almost let out a gasp at the cold that touched his skin but he clamped a hand over his face to stop that from happening. His clothes became soaked almost immediately. When he realized what was happening he kicked as hard as he could with both feet to get back up. He needed air.

Only problem was when he'd gone under the little bit of movement he'd caused with his plunge had made the water carry him to the side. So when he kicked to go up he ran into a solid sheet of ice. He smacked it with one hand, panic filling him, and squinted at it as best he could. The cold water was hurting his eyes.

Reaghan's movements were slow. He was freezing and the water slowed down any momentum he had. His hands smacked and ran over the ice trying to find the hole he'd just gone through but he couldn't see that he was about five feet away. He didn't even notice when the water moved again because his dad had come in after him.

The water was already making his fingers numb, and Reaghan had been under longer. Ergon tried to make himself slow down, barely able to see anything in the dim light. The boy couldn't have gone far, right?

There! In the scattered light than sifted through the ice, he saw a pale face and hands. He kicked his legs and prayed his eyes weren't just playing tricks on him. His clothes were weighing him down, making his movements slow and cumbersome. His hand reached out.. and hit something solid. His eyes burned with relief, but it wasn't over yet.

He pulled Reaghan tightly against himself and gave a kick without thinking, and his head smacked against the ice. He had no idea where the hole was anymore. A cuss slipped out, focused thought becoming difficult. He had to get Reaghan out! He turned onto his back and gave the ice a hard kick. It pushed them back down into the dark, but the second kick found his boot breaking through. Instantly, he curled so that he could shove Reaghan to the surface. He needed to open the space more before he could fit through fully. The ice was breaking easily now though.. They couldn't linger. "Reaghan," he gasped out, pleading for a reaction before he was even fully out of the water himself.

Eirex kept tugging until he was pulled into Riya's arms, where he clutched at her desperately. All he wanted was to burrow his face against her until everything got better, but his eyes were stuck to the ice where he had seen his father go through. His gaze burned hot with tears. He'd only had brief experiences with the cold water that resided under frozen ice, but he'd heard plenty of stories. It rarely ended well.

He heard a couple thuds and a sharp crack. He let out a wordless scream when something emerged from the lake, his eyes blurred over with tears. Was that them?

Her eyes were locked on the hole in the ice. Waiting. Riya knew the tears in her eyes were starting to fall over and they would eventually freeze to her face but she couldn't stop them. She was beyond worried. There was no movement at the hole.

The few moments that passed by felt like eternity as she waited for something. Any sign that her husband and son would be alright. Then she heard something hitting the ice from below. Had they gotten too far from the hole? What if they couldn't break through!? Iriyana felt panic rising even more. She couldn't leave Eirex to go help them because her son would likely follow.

Finally the ice broke and she watched as something - or rather someone - was pushed through it. She gave a gasp of relief to see Reaghan. He was shortly followed by Ergon. Or at least partly. He still needed to get out of the water. She didn't say anything as she watched, her eyes locked on the small form of her son since he wasn't moving yet.

His little hands weren't doing anything to the ice and he was getting too numb to move. Reaghan no longer had his eyes open, the cold water hurt too much. He could feel the shivering all along his body and eventually it got to the point where he thought he was moving but he wasn't. He'd reached the point where he was losing consciousness due to lack of oxygen and hypothermia taking over.

So when he dad grabbed him he was completely unaware of what was going on. He didn't even know when they broke the surface. His little body had gone completely lax and his skin was more blue than it should have been, especially in the lips.

The call of his name got no response.

With no response coming, Ergon felt his already racing heart beat even harder. His eyes burned from the cold water and the fear, but he had to move. Attempts to climb out met with more ice crackling and breaking under him.. He eventually got out and had to slide on his belly to spread his weight, clothes and skin trying to stick to the ice while dragging Reaghan by an arm.

When he did try to stand again, his leg went right through the ice. It was shallow enough though that he could put his weight onto the frozen bottom and stand. It wasn't as though he could feel the cold of the water anymore anyway. Everything was freezing. He hugged Reaghan to his chest again and kicked through the rest of the shallows to reach where Riya and Eirex were.

While Reaghan was lax and unresponsive, Ergon was stiff as a board and trembling uncontrollably. Still, he smacked at the boy's back a couple times before he laid the little body down and forced air into the lungs. If the boy had inhaled water, it needed to come out.

There was no thinking, just doing. He could pass out once Reaghan, once his family, was safe.

Eirex continued clutching to Riya, though his legs were kicking a litle by now. He wanted to go help! His father was moving so slow, and Reaghan wasn't moving at all. "Mommy.." he whimpered softly. No more father and mother. Mommy and daddy and a scared little boy. "He's not moving.." He kicked a little harder when the pair reached the ground, watching as Ergon tried to wake his twin. "Reaghan!"
