Aliez
Vanguard Corporal

MOOD: Curious
ACTION: Offering help to Delta-T

What happened to the people who created the robots? Aliez couldn’t help but lift his head to listen now that Andreiya, who was usually so calm and didn’t like creating waves, spoke up. But he and Vyn were right. There was something strange going on.

There was evidence of living beings that had once been there. A bathroom was an indicator that someone had once made use of the ship either before or during the robot’s occupation of it.

Carefully, not wanting to move too quickly or seem like he was trying to crowd Delta-T, Aliez stood from where he’d been sitting. He had placed the extra water where he’d been sitting, just in case the others showed up, and took a few steps closer to the others near the robot.

He wanted to know what it had to say. He wanted to know where the robots and ship came from, and why it spoke Velenian. If they actually achieved sentience, or if it was just a flaw in their programming. Or maybe their programming has allowed them to adapt. There was so much they could learn, but only one way to really do so.

As with the Reasoner, he hoped for answers from Delta-T in relation to Vyn’s questions. They were good questions that he would have been too uncertain to ask, and he was proud of both Vyn and Andreiya for trying to get more information.

Naeria… something piqued his curiosity with her offer to help, although what resources she intended to give, he was unsure.

“Maybe it is true that you’ve all completed your trial to earn your own starseeds. Corporal Vyn is correct. Usually it would be impossible for any of you to acquire your own starseeds. We Velencians are born with ours. But you are right -- maybe there will be something possible tomorrow that was impossible yesterday.”

Aliez glanced down at the white band with the red cross on his upper arm, and then gestured to it before speaking to Delta-T again.

“My name is Corporal Aliez. I have trained extensively as a medic and healer for my people, but we have also all been trained in advanced technology. And I am an expert in the health of starseeds within an individual.”

He paused once more and gestured to Andreiya.

“He is correct as well. If you wish to obtain starseeds, you should not neglect yourselves.”

Another glance and nod to Naeria, before looking back at the robot.

“If you would like, I could inspect your functions to make sure your systems are ready to receive a starseed. If a starseed was put inside a body that was not ready, artificial or not, it could reject or damage the starseed. After waiting so long, it would be a tragedy to lose one.”

Another pause, and this time he looked up at Vyn.

“Corporal Vyn, if Delta-T is kind enough to agree to a checkup, would you be my assistant, please? Your expertise could prove invaluable.”

Delta-T
Protector of the future (NPC)

MOOD: Frazzled
ACTION: Trying to process everything

Questions, questions. They kept popping up one after the other, in all directions around the tinman, and his head nervously turned this way and that as he attempted to parse and answer them all.
With Andreiya, he started, "We are all from different places originally. I was built on Pluto..."

Something made obvious by the windup key shaped like a Pluto symbol sticking out of his back, which he likely had to turn now and again.

"And in all seriousness, we have been trying our best to maintain ourselves, truly. But we're working with limited information, corrupted data. Some of us need specialized tools, or parts that were only manufactured once..." He sagged wearily. "Others were mass-produced and simply not built to last. We're unfortunately missing the data on how to instill machines with a consciousness like ours, so building a new body isn't so simple a task even with resources."

Naeria's offer of help was met with a silent expression of curiosity that was cut short by Vyn's line of questioning.

"The word 'trial' was the first the Reasoner translated, and everything fell into place from there," answered Delta-T sagely. "Trials and star seeds, a path to transcendence beyond one's original form for those who passed... there were empty vessels for us in the chamber where we found most of the information." He pointed to the golden dome on his head with a proud nod. "We believe whoever built this place had such an intent for it."

More curiosity was earned by Aliez from the robot when he offered assistance, but Delta-T ultimately shook his head and backed away. "Oh, I shouldn't... I do appreciate the offer, but there's still so much to do. I must go remind the Reasoner to feed the cybercritter, among other things. Please make yourselves comfortable while we continue to assess the situation."

A polite bow was given, and he was gone again.

Vyn
Vanguard Corporal

MOOD: Frustrated.
ACTION: Leaving the area to keep himself busy so he doesn’t start kicking inappropriate statues in inappropriate places.

Vyn tried to process Delta-T's departure with something more than an ever-deepening frown. If he kept frowning like this, he was going to acquire permanent lines on his face well before he reached old age.

There were pieces missing, questions that still needed answers.

They were machines. Whatever stream of consciousness they had was little more than a collection of data — considerable, perhaps, due to their longevity, but it shouldn’t be impossible to transfer from one to the other.

The Reasoner did the translating? That seemed far from reassuring. The Reasoner spoke Velenian, but it did so imperfectly; how were the robots to know it had translated anything correctly? Did they just assume this information and the empty vessels were meant for them? A belief wasn’t a fact.

Vyn couldn’t even be pleased with Aliez’s attempts to investigate further. Delta-T was gone before the offer could be reiterated, off to go back to the Reasoner and its ridiculous cybercritter, as if some unsophisticated two-pixel animation truly needed to be fed.

“Where exactly are we supposed to make ourselves comfortable?” Vyn asked the empty air in front of him.

Back at the party? Or would one of the statues provide a convenient perch?

Vyn had no interest in finding out. In their time here so far, he’d been left with one disappointment after the other.

He turned to his friends, gaze drifting from one face to the other. Then he sighed and shook his head.

“I need a moment,” he said, stepping away to find some privacy — something he knew wouldn’t be afforded to him here for long.

Aliez
Vanguard Corporal

MOOD: Frustrated
ACTION: Asking Andreiya for a moment to talk.

Missing data? Empty vessels? Information on how rebirth worked? The need to obtain starseeds?

An uncomfortable shiver made its way down Aliez’s neck and back. There was too much information they were missing, too much being withheld from them.

Delta-T’s answers only made way for more questions. He was unaware that a computer program needed sustenance. Unless it was part of its programming to be treated as one would a pet. The reminder only made him more frustrated about their previous encounters with others.

He didn’t even get a chance to try and find out if there was space for a starseed in the robot’s body (which he doubted), but was glad no one broke his cover by pointing out how he’d never handled a starseed in his life. Even the Commodore needed special equipment.

Vyn was frustrated. He could feel Andreiya’s frustration as well. The others…? He tried not to feel disappointment in his fellow Vanguard, but he was quickly realizing their separation in interests.

Keeping everyone safe, getting home, finding a way to save Velencya… did no one else care that their families could be lost to the vastness of space to die if Velencya stopped functioning? Since when did the others stop caring?

“Would it be okay if we talked?” he quietly asked Andreiya as Vyn announced that he required privacy. “I have concerns that the empty vessels mentioned may have been corpses…”

Andreiya
Vanguardian Corporal

MOOD: Disappointed
ACTION: Leaving with Aliez/telling the other Vanguardians to message him if they need anything

Delta-T was gone again.

Just when Andreiya had been hopeful to have some greater understanding of what they where, and why they were all here, the robot left.

For the cybercritter.

A creature, he noted, that seemed to be no more than simple programming. And yet, the robots doted on it as if it were a real, living thing? Or was it some sort of code? He didn’t understand the complexities of this cybercritter.

He didn’t understand much up here.

His heart was heavy when Vyn said he needed a moment, because he was as worried for his friends as he was himself. He looked after him but was glad to have an interruption from his thoughts when Aliez asked for a moment as well.

With him, at least. It was a good excuse to take a small break and compose himself and figure this out. He shuddered at the idea of corpses but he could only hope that Aliez was wrong. “Yes, I would like to talk, too. I am sure there are plenty of quiet places with,” he paused, and looked at the statues briefly before shuddering, “less distractions.”

On his way out, he addressed the remaining Vanguardians. “I am stepping out for a moment, but if you need me or if you find anything interesting, I have my ComTech. Please be safe.”

And then, he hurried out with Aliez. Hopefully to figure out something to do about all of this.

Neryn
Vanguard Cadet

MOOD: Confused, more than anything
ACTION:

The robots wanted... starseeds? Neryn didn't exactly understand everything about starseeds - only that everyone had one. They corrected themself; everyone but the robots. Yet the robots were... inorganic. They were created, not born, so it was safe to assume they did not go through the cycle of rebirth. Thus, they needed starseeds to be reborn but why would... they want to be? Because their creators vanished?

Hmm, no. It did not seem likely these robots wanted to find their creators again. It sounded more like they wanted to, as Delta-T said, 'transcend' their potential.

The robot left before Neryn could ask any questions, so lost in their thoughts as they were. They nodded at the Corporals as they left the area to go clear their heads. Neryn found a flat-ish bit of rubble, and sat down. There were so many questions and yet not near enough answers. Stars it was frustrating. For someone who was so analytic and methodical, the fact these robots couldn't give a straight answer - for one reason or another, surely - was incredibly, as the humans put it, annoying.

Not because Neryn expected them to give a straight answer, but because they were inorganic machines! They were created! Which meant, logically, that they had some sort of routine that controlled their directives. The problem was, it sounded like they'd already long since moved past that part. They had personalities, clearly. They had their own desires - even if those desires seemed... vaguely threatening. Was that not 'transcendent' enough?

What had they gotten themselves into? Moreover, why did Neryn get the sinking feeling that all of this was going to explode in their faces before the night was over? The datapad gave them no indication one way or the other that the Commedore or Prince had received any of the Vanguard's messages, so they were still very much on their own out here.

Sometime later, Neryn pushed off from the rubble they'd sat down on, and rejoined the group.
