Rest... sounded good, honestly. But Zivah was a kid, and it was sort of required that she still groan and act like it was the worst thing ever. "But what if we stayed up, and you told me stories of all the battles you've been in instead?" Zivah whispered, grinning. It was probably borderline unacceptable to defy her mother's clear instruction, and yet - she wasn't ready for this one-on-one moment to end.
True, she and her mother had a great many one-on-one moments together, but not quite like this.
Almost as if in answer, Ai shut her up by plucking her up into her strong arms, and hefting her up to her shoulders. Zivah would have made a noise of excitement, had she not smothered her hands over her mouth, catching the giggles. Her hands moved to carefully rest in her mother's dreads, careful of her antennae - which were long, and straight, and looked sharp at the ends, unlike her own.
The instruction was... a little odd, but Zivah didn't give it much consideration, and instead nodded intently, patting her smaller hand against her mother's cheek. "Okay, mother. I promise."

Ai clucked her tongue. “What if you went to sleep instead?” There was much she wouldn’t have minded telling Zivah, but she had thus far behaved herself. Things she knew Lucijah wouldn’t approve of Ai strayed from or at the very least heavily edited. Such as the entire existence of her Aunt and cousin in Oba.
As she walked back to camp with her little giggling sprite sat primly atop her shoulders Ai couldn’t help wondering how she’d gotten here. Motherhood wasn’t such a stretch; she’d always planned on expanding their numbers. To do so out of a genuine desire with a partner, though…that had been new. The little fingers through her dreads, the tap against her cheek…it was almost enough to melt her.
“…Have I told you about the yaeli I fought on the beach? The one who also fought with keldari?”

Awww! Zivah pouted, not that Ai could see it from where Zivah was lifted high up above her shoulders. She didn't deign to answer that with the dutiful 'yes, mother' that was owed, and instead she rested her head atop her mother's dreads, little legs kicking just a bit as they retreated from the cliff side.
But then Ai began to speak, and the girl lit up again, perking up so physically that her mother had to feel it. The story was familiar, but the eagerness of hearing one of her mother's stories turned the whole experience new again. "No! They fought with a keldari? How did you win?" She gasped, making sure to keep her voice low, despite her sleepy enthusiasm.

For a moment Ai’s scowl returned, but only because she had to realign herself so Zivah wouldn’t fall off. She almost snapped at her for it, had it ready on her tongue, and thought better of it.
“I had Syn and Faust to help me. When I was younger I never left without them so for every strike he made I had two of my own-“ With her voice lowered, Ai weaved a tale of Aishan supremacy on her way back to camp. In truth the battle hadn’t been as easy, but her memories made it feel as if it was.

Zivah wobbled, briefly, but her mother quickly corrected her grip, and they continued on. She grinned and listened, intently, even as they reached their sleeping area and Ai settled her down. She tucked her arms under her head and listened, even as her eyes grew heavy. She wound up not hearing the ending of the story, but her dreams were equally exciting, in the end. The stress of the campfire was the last thing on her mind, the next morning when she got up.
