Atticus perked up a little when Devyn asked if there was anything he wanted to tell Elliot. He’d been trying not to send too many messages. He didn’t want to seem needy or desperate!
He rubbed his eyes again as he thought, and then looked down at the little turtle.
“Um… Could you tell him that I miss him and look forward to seeing him, please?” he asked. There were so many things that he wanted to say to Elliot, but he thought that would be the easiest for Devyn to type and send. And it wouldn’t be too personal for Michael to have to read to Elliot.
“Oh, and that I’m okay,” he added and chewed on his lip a bit sheepishly. “I know he worries. It’s really sweet. I bet Michael thinks it’s sweet that you worry about him.”
Atticus thought it was sweet… He wasn’t sure what Michael was to Devyn, especially with the way he talked about Percy and Marius, but… at least they looked out for each other it seemed.

“Is it sweet?” Devyn asked, and hummed thoughtfully as he pulled out the little device so he could start texting. His fingers were glad for a break from the wirework and beading and he had to slow himself down when it came to typing up a message. Sometimes, he was tempted to pull out his phone and just speak into it so the words would appear on the screen and he could just copy them over, but he supposed this was better to learn it. And Michael could just correct him later if he was making mistakes.
“I suppose I think it’s sweet when he worries about me,” he agreed. It took him a moment to type the message and send it, but when he did he made sure that Atticus knew, “I’ve asked Michael to tell him you miss him and you’re excited to see him, and that you’re healing up and doing okay. I asked Michael if he was doing okay, too. I do worry about him!”
He sighed, dramatic, and set Soleiyu’s invention down so he could get back to work.
“Maybe I should put a few extra protection charms on it for him, I do worry. I don’t want anything to happen to him, I don’t know what I would do without him.”

Atticus nodded in agreement. He did think it was sweet. It was cute that Devyn fussed over someone who seemed to have everything together. He had money, he had good looks, he had a nice house. And he had Devyn as a friend, so that was definitely a good thing. Oh, and he was pretty good at cooking.
“Does he get hurt a lot?” Atticus wondered, tilting his head to the side a bit. “I saw the scar on his face, but it looked old.” Well, older than something that just happened.
Although, he supposed there were things he could worry about that were more than just getting hurt. Like being lonely, or not being kind to himself. Devyn had already told him he needed to be kinder to himself, so he assumed that was one of the things he worried about for Michael.
“You like him a lot, don’t you?” After all, Atticus seemed to feel the same way about Elliot.

“I do,” Devyn answered easily; he didn’t look up, but it seemed more because he was just focused on making progress, and he already had so much done–he wanted to have it finished so he could surprise Michael with it. “He’s very important to me. He’s very brave, and very hard working. You know, I haven’t asked him how he got that scar on his face.”
Michael didn’t seem like he was as keen to talk about such things as Devyn was. Of course he was curious, he just didn’t want to pry. His skin might have healed, but Devyn suspected he still had a lot of open wounds in his heart.
Something he understood.
Something he didn’t press, just in case.
“I’ve seen him get hurt protecting people, though. He got stabbed trying to look after me not so very long ago. But I’m stronger now, so hopefully that won’t happen again. To anyone I care about.”
He gave Atticus a brief, affectionate look before he returned to his wire twisting.
If anyone was going to be stabbed, it really shouldn’t be the kid who hadn’t done anything wrong, or the guy who went out of his way to accommodate a strange space alien.

If Michael was important to Devyn, then it meant he was important to Atticus too. He smiled back at him from across the table, and watched as Devyn went back to working on the tree for Michael.
He looked down at his little turtle and picked up the thin wire he was using to weave the beads together, figuring he should get to work on making sure the pearl was safe inside the shell, but with an opening so it could be seen.
“I’ll do my best to stay out of trouble from now on,” Atticus promised. He didn’t want to give Devyn more trouble than he already had to deal with. And he especially didn’t want Elliot to worry about him.
