And that should have been the end of the conversation. Nataniel was endlessly annoyed at himself for how he could just hear Tanwyn’s scuffling around as he gathered his things in the adjacent room, and that was all it took for Nat to think that he did not want to be disincluded from his friends’ excursion, despite what he considered the ‘late’ hour of the evening. They probably wouldn’ get up to anything interesting, and they probably wouldn’t talk about him behind his back if he didn’t show up.
…But what if they did?
Or he could just go and be sure to be a part of whatever nothing occurred. His friends would likely get bored a half hour in, anyway, so it wasn’t… that detrimental to his meticulous sleep schedule.
Nataniel had found himself scrambling to ready his own things before Tanwyn set out to leave. If he didn’t have to ask the other man to wait on him, he lowered the risk of having to verbalize his change of heart. Nat threw on some stripy gray trunks and a loose-fitting navy blue tank. A water bottle and a towel crammed into a bag. And honestly, what else would he need besides that?
There wasn’t any sun to be afraid of, and he doubted they’d be there long enough to get hungry.
He met Tanwyn in the hallway and was silently pleased that his friend didn’t ask him to explain himself. They were able to simply collect their key sets from the glass dish on the shelf by the door, with Nataniel locking the house behind them before they settled into Tanwyn’s car, and the drive out to the reservoir was peaceful enough. If Nataniel was a little bit quiet and bleary from it being his bedtime, he was grateful for Tanwyn not to mention it.
When they made it to the reservoir some fifteen minutes later, Nataniel was surprised to see that there were still other people in his line of vision: a pair packing their beach gear into the car, scattered singles and couples still lounging on the sand, and an older man far off who seemed to be walking his dog. Another group a suitable distance away had a whole bonfire going, and it wasn’t even completely dark yet. Nataniel blinked quizzically at the scene, then glanced off to the deep blue-purply-reddish skyline. Did these people really have nothing better to do?
“I should have asked how long we planned to be out for,” Nataniel grumbled softly at Tanwyn, glancing to his phone screen to see if Gideon had texted the group concerning his arrival. He would’ve been surprised if Gideon hadn’t beaten them here, but as far as he could tell, he and Tanwyn were the first to arrive. He fiddled idly with the gold charm dangling off his phone case, staring blankly at the entrance to the parking lot while they waited for the other boy to show up.

Like, he should be fine.
There was legit no reason for Gideon to even be miffed at the situation because that's how it had always been. Tanwyn and Nataniel were both older than him, closer in age to each other than either of them were to Gideon (though, honestly not by much. Nataniel was practically right in the middle of them). And it had always seemed like they were simply in a different part of their lives than Gideon was. When their parents- their parents, so that should be clue enough as to how young Gideon was- had gotten together, Gid was pretty sure he'd just been invited to play along with them because there was nowhere else for him to go and nothing else for him to do. Nat's mother would've pitched a fit if he was rude to their guests.
So he'd been friends with them by virtue of that, but they hadn't really communicated openly between then and Gideon becoming Feldspar. All the stuff that had happened with Gid's family and life... He didn't blame Nat or Tanwyn for not knowing how to handle any of that. At least, he didn't think he blamed them.
It was just that when he wanted to do friend-type things now, he expected them to go for it! They had way more in common now than ever!
Tanwyn was especially good at it. Gideon felt he'd connected in a really personal way to the older man through their traumas. Wynnie understood Gid better now than he had when they'd been children. They hung out reasonably often now, sometimes for Negaverse stuff, but sometimes just for the company. Gideon appreciated the effort he went to.
...Not so much with Nataniel.
Gideon couldn't explain why exactly he still felt some sort of wall there, but he doubted he was the one putting it up. 'That's just how Nat is,' people told him. But Gideon wasn't so sure. It looked like Wynnie and Basyl could get away with a lot more than Gideon could. If one of them had asked him for a late-night beach trip, Gid was sure the answer would've been 'yes.' He wasn't gonna complain. It didn't seem right. ...It just didn't completely feel like Nat was treating him as a friend.
So when he pulled his little car into the beach parking lot, he was surprised to see both men standing on the rocks waiting for him. He couldn't be sure if Tanwyn had talked him into it or what, but Gideon was beaming at both of them as he approached. "Yo, guys," he greeted with a wave. "I'm really glad you decided to come," he added to Nat. "Honestly I was looking for something for all of us to do together, and this seemed low-key enough to be up everyone's alley. Are we good to get out there?"
