She and Tethys watched as Kylaelya puttered about the meadow filling all of his little pouches with any seeds he could find to be grown later. Some would need id from people more familiar with the local flora. She herself was not immune to the plant madness and Ky had shared which plants were safe to gather seeds from. She had pocketed a few here and there form plants he found interesting. No doubt she and the water male could trade at the end of the day too.

Despite having not found the tree yet, this trip was still quite lucrative. He was starting to get worried about pouch space though. Idly he sized the ice water hybrid up wondering if he would consent to play pack mule for seeds too if Ky had no more room. When she finally felt like he had milked the area of all of its seeds, at least those that interested him, he bade them have lunch. They ate high in one of the trees and they all relaxed into the boughs for a good rest and a bit of a chit chat.

He felt better being high up in the trees with food and friendly banter, maybe this place wasn’t so bad after all. They had avoided most of the dangers so far and the two plant nerds seemed pretty happy. Even he had found a few healing herbs that his mother used often in her beast healing practice. He reckoned that she would welcome any extra that he could find for her. He was slowly beginning to relax.

They felt a bit better after their rest and trudged onto into the jungle still looking for that particular tree. This was about where their luck ran out however. Suddenly they were surrounded on all sides by the mod of radaku who had no doubt been following them ever since their first encounter.
“No time to climb now, get your weapons ready and stand your ground.”
She was not hopeful as to their chances this time.

“Make as much noise as possible, convince them that we would be too much effort to bother attacking, make yourself as big as possible.”
He hoped they were not particularly hungry or territorial, but it was unlikely otherwise why bother showing themselves at all.

“So much for having a nice peaceful trip when we meet our ancestors telling it wasn’t our fault.”
He was the son of two beast charmers. He had the best chance of getting them out of this without bloodshed.
“Listen to me now, open your hands palm out, do not touch your weapons.”
He stepped forward, making the churring noises that his Mother had taught him. It was a friendly sound and meant that they were no threat. He saw a pup scamper nearby.
“We seem to be too close to a den.” Not good.

“How do we get out of here then? We can’t climb, we can’t run and you say we can’t even put our hands on our weapons.”
Pack hunters were a whole new level of scary. There was a feral glint of intelligence in their eys something, she had only ever seen in her Father Kaiko’s eyes and only during a disaster when she or Ikaika were in trouble. It was scarier in an animals eyes.

Oh dear, the one cardinal rule with all wildlife was don’t’ get between a Mother and its c**. He sent a fervent prayer to the gods and set himself to listening to the beast master’s kid. He was literally putting his life in Tehtys’ hands. He held his hands out and spread the fingers. No weapons here. He wondered if there was a way to quickly convince them that the crew was not edible.

He spoke calmly, just their luck that they had walked right into a den site. A war cry startled everyone nearby and a radaku leapt at the noise only to be feathered with an arrow to the heart. The female crumpled to the ground and the kids were surrounded by the war party of alk ladies from earlier. Their bolstered numbers dissuaded any further attacks. A male stood by the downed female, her mate no doubt.

She was shocked to be surrounded by tall lady warriors so quickly, they had given no warning at their approach. But as they seemed to not be a threat and were in face protecting them she didn’t mind. She would take tall alk ladies over being eaten any day, though Tehtys might have saved them with his gentle churrs and platitudes if one of the warriors hahdn’t yelled. That could neither be proven or disproven.

He to was grateful that the alk’s were there to intervene. It had been a trying journey but a lucrative one. His pockets were fit to bursting with new species to try in Matori when he got home. He was grateful for Akea and Tethys’ help. No the radaku water retreating and one of the alk ladies plopped a radaku cub, still very young on his lap.
“He is orphaned to save you, honor your gods and look after him.”

Another alk lady plopped a cub with black fur telling him the same line. He had seen the light fade from their Mother’s eyes and he wrapped his arms more tightly around the little furry bundle. Hoping that their father who was glaring balefully would not follow them to seek revenge. But the pups needed nourishment that the family could give them that the father could not.

The radaku pups were cute, she scratched the one that Ky held behind the ears.
“They are so friendly as babies and so not as adults.”
Now that the outsider kids were safe the alks melted back into the forest like the radaku pack had.
“Welp! Time to go home!” She was due for a hot bath, tea and a good book

Ky looked up into the face of the alk who had met his eyes earlier,She was the leader of the band. She gave him a sad smile, patted the radaku and followed her sisters. Ky clung to the boney fruzzy little beast who was making mewly noises. He looked directly at Tethys. “You and your family will teach me how to look after him right?”

“Yes we will, he and she are in good hands, just wish the Mom hadn’t been slain, I do think the war cry mucked everything up but I cannot guarantee it would have worked so better that we are all safe.”
“Maybe when we are older we can come back,.” Ky had not found his fancy tree after all. At least he could run what occurred by his parents and make sure he had done the right thing with the radaku.
