If Heike could stiffen up any more than she already was, she'd collapse on the spot. A....A hybrid?! Her? How dare!
She opened her mouth to speak, clear anger now in her eyes, when a hand touched her arm. Doesina was looking at her with a pleading expression on her face, now standing to her full height and towering over the child with her cousin. Heike shut her mouth, giving a humph in her throat.
"Did you mommas not teach you not to talk to strangers?" she spat out, her voice strained and rough.

Oh, no. This was going badly. As fully expected. Doesina could only watch, feeling helpless, while the kid's eyes watered, he nodded, and took off running in the direction she assumed was his village. Likely Ast.
"You didn't have to be so harsh..." she said softly, watching him go with an ache in her heart for him. Maybe she could follow later and apologize. The kid would have enough problems when he was older than also growing to distrust the other Aishans not of his family.

"He's going to face worse when he gets older," was all Heike said on the matter, before continuing to walk, now in the opposite direction of where the kid went. She honestly only felt a tiny, tiny bit bad for how she'd spoken to him. Not enough to really notice it underneath how offended she felt. "May as well start distrusting the rest of us now."

"Aw, Heike. That's really not fair." Doesina continued, knowing it wouldn't affect how her cousin felt at all. It occurred to her, as it often did, how opposite they were to each other and their respective Tribes. "That's exactly why you should be nice to him."

Heike just snorted at that and continued walking, making sure not to look at Doesina. They spent many hours like this in silence. The Elidae wasn't oblivious to how much the other girl kept looking behind them. Probably wanted to go back, gawk at all the hybrids like always. Like sideshows at a circus. She guessed that was all they really were, at the end of the day. No matter her own problems, she would be accepted by the other Elidae. She could redeem herself. How would they ever, when half their blood is forever tainted?
Than again, Doesina was right. He was still just a boy. As the hours passed and her anger evaborated, Heike did start to feel those guilty feelings. Would that be something she'd also have to work on before she returned to Kiros?
Things would be easier if she'd been the one born an Elaria.
