Dris’rynne reached out to casually pat the taller woman on the back. At one point in their lives she’d been able to pack Adenah on her hip, but now her daughter could likely carry her. “As long as you were happy and cared for, I suppose it would. You have enough to worry about right now without the stress of children so it’s probably for the best you waited.” She couldn’t imagine trying to keep up with Grunt’s demands while raising little ones. “I’d like for you to find a partner first. Someone who can be there for you at the end of the day.”

As they walked Adenah pondered how much she could really tell her mother. Anything about the children was off limits, but…”I have a fiancé.” She admitted with a little smile. When the shifter turned, a surprised raise to her eyebrow, Adenah let out a little laugh. “Sorry, there was just so much going on with the guild…I know, I really should have said something.” Reaching for Dris’rynne’s hand, she gave it a squeeze and the two walked side by side. “He’s a wonderful man, mama. When we get back I’ll have to introduce you two. His name is Dovian, he’s a black smith, and he’s a hybrid like me. His father’s Oban and his mother is from Tale.”

Dris’rynne couldn’t help being shocked by the news of her daughter’s engagement. There was no hiding the hurt, especially since she hadn’t even known about a relationship, but…well, seeing the way Adenah’s stress melted off just talking about this Dovian made her smile. “He sounds wonderful.” And really, he did. A blacksmith? Honestly, it was a little comical. Dris’rynne had fought her entire life to get out of the forge and her future son-in-law spent all his time in one.
Fate was so funny sometimes.
“Now you really must be careful. You’ll break his heart if you don’t come home.” That much she knew from personal experience. Seeing how torn Teslaron had been, all those years ago, when she was lying in the street bleeding out…Gods, she hoped he wouldn’t have to relive that.

Oh, she remembered those times well. Her father returning to the apartment with mama in his arms…Even with the shifter paleness consuming her she’d been pale compared to the hot blood that poured out of her. Under no circumstances was she going to let the same thing happen to her own children. They wouldn’t be witness to something like that; she’d already promised Dovian as much.
And what sort of wife would she be if she lied to her husband?
“Mama?...Thank you, for coming. It means a lot to have you here.”

“One way or another we’ll handle this.” Even if the worst came to pass it was Dris’rynne’s job to protect her daughter. Now that she knew Adenah had a fiancé waiting for her she was more determined than ever to see the hybrid get home safely. If that meant that only one of them came back…Well, that was a sacrifice she was ready to make.
“I just wish you’d come to me earlier. You know I’ll always be here for you, no matter what.” No matter how much her children may annoy her from time to time at the end of the day Dris’rynne would burn the world down if it made them happy. That’s just what mothers did.
