“…I think it’s best if your parents meet us here.” When she saw the way his face fell, Sariza was quick to add, “But you don’t have to stay in the cell! I’m taking you to the office where we can get something to eat and have some warm tea. Does that sound nice?” The officials in this town were going to have some serious apologizing to do once his folks got here, but Sariza was keen on smoothing this over as much as she could. At least, for the kid. Honestly, she wanted to see the guardsmen get their butts chewed out before she left.

“Oh, well…that doesn’t sound too bad.” It was a lot better than sitting in that cell and even if he could still hear the man yelling in the background the noise was getting further away. He was still sniffling and scared, but she was being nicer to him so he gave her hand a squeeze. “…I really am a good kid.” Sekani added in his tiniest voice.

“There’s no such thing as a bad one.” She answered firmly and gave his hand a squeeze in return. When she looked down at his unsure features Sariza made sure to show a softer smile. “Even if you had been guilty you wouldn’t be locked up for life; just until your parents got here. Just make sure we never meet again, okay? Good kids shouldn’t be here.” Even if he did end up in this cell again she wouldn’t be around, but the words just seemed kinder than knowing he wouldn’t have any help on the inside next time.

“Oh, I’m never coming back here.” Despite his tears Sekani was almost too eager to toss out that bold statement. He likely wouldn’t even be going back to town on his own for a long time after this so she didn’t have to worry about him! Once mama and papa heard he’d be lucky to get out of the house! “But…I mean, seeing you again wouldn’t be so bad if I don’t get in trouble for it.”

While it was kind of him to say, Sariza knew she likely wouldn’t ever see Sekani again. Not only because of where he lived, but because of their lives. She hoped that he lived a happy, calm life whereas hers grew more complex by the day. So long as he could grow up as peacefully as possible then there should be no reason why either of them would ever have to talk again which was, arguably, for the best.
