Ultear 6
He couldn’t wait to get back and get a better look at their prey. He fiddled with a long flight feather. It was pretty and banded. He liked the resistance it gave when he waved it fast in the air. He also enjoyed running his fingertips over it.
He was not brave enough to tickle Thallassa with it though.

Thallassa 6
They were walking along a game trail when Thal noticed some small antelope prints. He quietly explained to Ultear the markers he was using to track the animal, but as the trail got fresher he warned Ultear to silence. He gestured for Ushi to try and come around on the other side of where they figured the beast was.

Ushi 6
Ushi melted into the bush and went around a small clearing in which the antelope likely were. His mouth watered at the thought of the succulent meat, done up in his Father’s Oban spice mix which was so good. It could draw their neighbors in for an impromptu visit. He dropped into full predator mode and gave a bird call as a signal to Thallassa.

He did his best to make as much noise as possible as he had been told to flush the wildlife toward the hidden hunter. He heard a scuffle and then silence.
“Did he get him?” He whispered to Thal. His whole body was shot through with excitement. So this was where meat came from. From the bush itself. A long walk into the middle of nowhere hoping to eventually catch a glimpse of your quarry.

They came upon the kill. It had been speared. Ushi was getting disturbingly good at that.
“This was well done, it wouldn’t have suffered long.”
He explained to Ultear that you always shot to kill. If you could only shoot to wound you didn’t shoot at all.
Respecting the animal came first and nothing was wasted.

He made his way over to the kill and field dressed it. Letting Ultear watch how it was done. He divided the meat between himself and Thallassa. Some was given to the gods of hunting and to feed the spirits of the forest. It was a way to give thanks. He was sure the wildlife enjoyed the practice too, but perhaps they were the spirits to be appeased.

He absorbed as much information as he could. Then they were heading back home, even if they caught anything else, there was no space left to carry it in. The packs were significantly heavier now but the boys seemed to take it in stride. They ghosted over the terrain and he felt like he was floating perched up high on Thallassa’s back.

The lad was attentive and learned quickly. They couldn’t ask for more than that. Their next break they took in the trees to avoid interested predators.
“How much further do you think Ushi?” They had taken a slightly different route back as there had been predator sign fresh on the trail.

“Not too much further now.” He had taken them down a trail that he hunted on often. It was twisty and well vegetated. He knew the path well so he took the youngling and the lead.
At the very least they would all get a good sleep tonight.
“How are you feeling Ultear?” It was a decent sized adventure for a little one.

It had been a long day, but it had also been an epic one.
“I’m okay, just might not be all that energetic tomorrow that’s all.” His job hadn’t been that hard but they had been at it for a long time. The rough terrain could be a bit of a struggle sometimes even for him.

He was so looking forward to that, he was all sweaty and coated in dust.

“Glad you are doing okay, you have caught up with the big boys so far.” Which ewas no small feat. Thal and he were not exactly the couch potato types. Hopefully Ultear’s brother could come on a trip next time. Ushi felt bad that he had missed this one.

Ultear sighed in relief when he saw that the house was now within an easy distance. He was excited to tell his Mom all about his adventures. He would tell his Dad later too, and his brother. He wondered what Ustasis had been doing today instead.
He was proud of what they had brought down as a team.

He spun his pack off his back gratefully, knowing that there was warm salt water in his future. He went to find his Dad and let their Mother’s know that their hunters had returned and successfully too.
“Be back soon.”

Ushi helped his cousin get down and then swung his own pack down. He stretched.
“No point in waiting for him. Into the sea, you will feel infinitely better. Arguably the best part of hunting was how good the bath felt after the fact. Well besides the resulting food from said hunt. Both were equally important, and he had worked up an appetite.
