The bees and the buzzzzz

Sylas and his brother had returned a couple of days ago from their little day trip to visit the farmer. It was a lot more helpful than he had initially thought it was going to be. The farmer did in fact have numerous hives and had managed to keep the bees for a number of years. It gave him hope that perhaps he could do it as well! The farmer was more than helpful when sharing the knowledge he had gained over the years as well as showing him how his hives were set up. Sylas had been about to start taking dimensions for his hives when the old man stopped him. He worried that he had overstepped and taken too many liberties when the old farmer grabbed his shoulder and pulled him along to an old barn. Inside appeared to be a supply shed, lots of tools and boxes were inside. The old man looked around a couple of shelves before it appeared that he found what he wanted. He came back towards Sylas holding out a box. It looked like one of the hive boxes they had just been looking at. “This here is an older box but should still work just fine. I don’t plan on adding another hive any time soon so you can take this one back for the swarm you found. They should be much happier in this. It’ll also be easier for you to harvest the honey when they utilize the frames inside. Inside there’s a smoke pot as well. I’m not sure what you used before to help round up the swarm but this will help even more. You can control the amount of smoke that comes out with this little wheel here. And when your hive gets a little older and they trust you, they’ll probably follow you around and you won’t even need the smoke.” Sylas nodded and took everything in. It was so exciting and he really found himself enjoying it. That’s when he knew he wanted to go home and start the process of taming the bees! Some regions, he had been told, even had different types of bees! Perhaps he would have to try and collect them all and have all the different types of honey to make things! He would have all different types of swarms around. As long as he could protect his bees he would be happy! It’s how he found himself back at home, the new hive set up in a small protected meadow where he had left the box initially. He was so happy to see that the hive was still using the storage crate he had put them in to begin with. ”We’re going to put you in your new home, now, bee-buddies.” He said as he set up the hive on one end of the meadow so he would have plenty of room to place other hives if he wished. Carefully, he moved the other box towards the new hive. Starting a small fire to get his smoke pot going, he carefully moved the piece of hive that they had salvaged over to the new hive box. Slowly but surely, and with a little help from the smoke behind the box, the bees started to make their way over to their new home. Sylas leaned back against a nearby tree and waited, deciding to have the patience to sit with his bees than try to come back later. He was going to be a tamer! And he was so excited to begin his journey of beekeeping! Just…maybe after a short nap.
