This, Andreiya could agree upon. He let out a sad, longing sigh.

“I miss home, too.”

He pursed his lips tightly and locked his eyes on one of the flowering plants he was so proud of, so eager to show off. “These are the only things I think I like about Earth,” he admitted. “The people are an acquired taste, and I have not acquired it. I hope we can save it. But.”

If the Commodore thought it was worth exploring other options, he would do his best.

“Do you think Commodore Lyndin ever gets homesick? For Velencya? …For Velenia?”

"The people here are unpredictable," said Naeria, staring at the flower that Andreyia seemed so proud of. "One minute they are kind, the next they are violent. The other life on Earth is much easier to appreciate, it is true."

The plants were beautiful. The animals were charming. The fungus and other decomposes, of course, had a special place in her heart and barely ever left her mind.

"I think Commodore Lyndin is correct in that it is not our responsibility to save this world, but I do find myself hoping that the humans manage it." There was so little life left in the universe that Naeria found herself wanting to support all of it. She hadn't even quite given up on the humans.

"I know my mother thought about Velenia often. I suppose it is the same for the Commodore," she said. It would explain some of the desperate actions that Lyndin had taken, even if in Naeria's mind it did not justify them.

Andreiya hummed thoughtfully, and tapped the toe of his boot onto the ground as he contemplated. “If they missed their home as much as I have missed mine, I suppose I can understand a bit more why these things mean so much to them. But I suppose it is a little more than that? If Velencya is in danger, the Commodore must be doing all he can to make sure that we are safe and have somewhere to flourish. Ah,” he sighed. “But I hope we can just fix Velencya. That is my home. Earth is not.”

He chewed on the inside of his cheek. “But I do not want to see it destroyed out of negligence. The humans just need a little help, maybe. There is so much that they could do to improve. I do want to help them. If they would let us. I mean, if I am here researching, there is only so much I can do anyway! I cannot make the plants grow faster. But,” another sigh, “I am afraid if I gave humans the resources to fix their world, to help, they might instead try to use it for something else. I do not like how difficult they can be. It is very frustrating. But. I suppose they are very young? Maybe I should try to look at them like that. But even the old ones are frustrating! Oh, Naeria. I am just very happy to be here with you. You make this so much more bearable. I am glad we came here together.”

"We'll find a way," said Naeria, and then, because Andreiya seemed so committed to Lyndin's opinion, added, "The Commodore thinks so."

While she wasn't as blindly supportive of the Commodore after several different choices he'd made that night on the hilltop, she'd appreciated his vote of confidence in the cadets afterwards.

Andreiya's next comment made her eyes widen out to their full owlish stare for a few seconds.

"I don't understand people," admitted Naeria, her voice going softer again like this was something that was hard to admit, too. "The humans make strange choices and get caught up in violence, but I don't always understand our people, either."

Since she was thinking about that night already, her mind flickered to the moment of Lyndin pulling out Caedus's starseed, and she swallowed.

"I never had many friends, until, um-" She cut off, and swallowed before managing, "I'm trying to say, I'm glad you're here, too."

Andreiya glanced at her for a second, trying to decipher whatever she wasn’t saying, but he didn’t look into it too much. She’d said what was important to her, and if there was more than that, she would say it in her own time or not say it at all. It wouldn’t do either of them any good for him to assume or try to connect the dots of pieces that hadn’t really been laid down for him.

“Well, I will be your friend forever. I am surprised you do not have an army of friends, I find that I very strongly want to keep you safe. You are very likable, and kind, and clever. You have a big heart and ask a lot of questions. I think you are a little shy, maybe? But you have no reason to be. I think you are very nice to be around. I would be very upset if you got hurt, because I like you, and I want you to be happy. I might not understand people–ours, or Earths, but I understand that you are a good person, and that is all that matters to me. And you like things that grow.”

That seemed to brighten him up a bit. “And I like people who want to see things flourish. I know that if it came down to it, you would choose to save life. Any life, maybe. I have no worries about you trying to destroy anything. It means I can trust you. And that means a lot to me.”

All of the kind things that Andreyia was saying about her made Naeria's cheeks flush a shade of dark violet. Her eyes, wide as ever, sparkled.

Andreyia deserved for someone to tell him how strong he was, and how kind. Someone should have pointed out that he had protected her, many times already, and that he managed to nurture things, too. This greenhouse he'd set up was very impressive.

Right now, though, Naeria was too overcome with emotion to say much at all.

She'd have to write it out later that night. Maybe she'd write it on paper, in the human way, so that she could add in some pressed clover or deadnettle or other Earth plants, to see if that would bring a smile to Andreyia's face when she handed it over.

For now, she stepped over to close the distance between them and she leaned against him, much like she'd leaned against him in the battle.

"I will be your friend forever, too."
