"So long as she's healthy and happy, I'll support her. It'd be nice to have her at the bakery-" His voice wavered near the end as Aurick nearly lost his footing, but he recovered quickly enough. The terrain had given a little under him, which was enough to put the baker's nerves on edge, but he wouldn't stop now! With a few deep, steadying breaths through the nose and out the mouth he kept on, "-what was I saying? Ah, yeah, I'd like to have her by my side but I don't mind supplying her with food for the day either."A bit of roasting, huh? "Met a few sailors once, said they weren't good at much beyond easy stews, but I'd argue against it. The spices they used made a meal heartier than any I've had before! So, I'd say with enough talent your roasts could beat out something served in the capital. A lot of it's just passion, you know?"

Even with the boom of his chatter, Harakan kept a sharp ear open for just such disturbances. He'd half-turned by the time he heard a little gasp and steadier breaths. Nothing had happened, the ground hadn't given way. All was well. Gave the surveyor a chance to check on the ribbonwork, too. "Shouldn't be too much longer, Aurick. Just speak up if we need to range further out and around." While this might have been for travelers' benefit, it would most definitely be to the road crew's. But if the baker didn't feel safe, then the later folk wouldn't either. "Sounds a healthy attitude to have. Never had siblings; is it just you and her?" Though he nodded to the compliment, Harakan wasn't in the habit of keeping his mouth shut. "There's something to that, I'll warrant. Noticed that the folk happier to cook are often better at it. Afraid I'll disagreee with your example, tho'. For sailors I'd put it as a matter of morale, and thus a necessity. You're on the mercy of the ocean if everybody's not pulling their own weight and then some, wot? And I don't often hear of the ocean having much in the way of mercy. Us up in thr mountains? Hard place, to be sure, but we can just up sticks and toddle off if we can't stomach the food." More cautious stepping, coming around thr main mound, and... And there came the edge of the path, just a little ways on! ""Keep steady, almost there."

At first Aurick was sure he was just being paranoid, but the further they traveled the more the feeling turned to sludge in his veins. "Maybe it wouldn't hurt to take a wider approach? Just to look for something a little firmer?" It would take longer to get to the farm, but it would be well worth it for peace of mind from the community at large. "Ah, didn't realize we were this close to the end though so maybe just watch your step going back?" Perhaps he should have said something sooner, but honestly, Aurick wasn't an expert on this. He just went with his gut and most of the time his gut was too busy sorting spices. "Oh no; I'm the eldest of seven." Gussying up his nerve, Aurick pressed on, doing his best to ignore the knot in his gut. "My mother is lightning like myself and Mama was Geian. They wanted a family of their own and they weren't about to let nature get in the way of that." Even with the sadness of her passing still fresh in his heart, he couldn't help smiling. "Made friends with Mr. Fairworth and here we are."

The rambling cheer didn't let up. It kept coming, steady, constant. Something to focus on, for both young men. "How close we are doesn't matter. One stable step at a time. We'll push a little ways more; I can adjust our markers on the way back. Should be a sight easier with the solid minimum like you've hung so far." As asked, the staff began testing at lower portions of the slope, no longer angling their route directly for the nearest bit of road. It would take a little longer, but the earth soon firmed more under their feet. The baker's guide was in no hurry. It would take as long as it took to make the trip right. That Aurick had two mothers had either slipped right by the Geian lad, or else been noted and otherwise dismissed. Apparently some folk took offense to that sort of thing, he'd heard. Lungs couldn't supress a snort at the notion. Humbug. As if it were any of their business. Then again, there's fussy sorts that should take umbrage at anything. Like that chap last month with a waterproof map 'round his neck, arguing with a whole lyari herd... "I take it Mr. Fairworth is your... Uncle then, let's say? Or had I misread your baking master? My parents had me call friends of their generation auntie or uncle. Simplifies things, wot?" That his Mama had her reference in the past tense caught up with him around the time the main path came back into clear view. The rolling voice dropped a third of its volume, tho' it still rolled around any open space available. Once the earth came solid under his footsteps, Harakan's green eyes turned rather more softly to the taller boy. "Oh. I'm sorry to hear of her. You alright, Aurick?"

Anchoring more of his twin, the baker gave his line a little tug to test it's durability before moving on after the Geian. "He is. He and his husband have been great friends of the family for many years." So much had happened in their little family over the past few years that Aurick hadn't really thought about how spouting this information in front of strangers may be reciprocated. In all honesty he was just doing his best to make careful 'one two, one two' steps in the other man's wake. He couldn't say he wasn't relieved when the main path came upon them. The anticipation of something bad happening hadn't really settled in until closer toward the end, but once he'd tied off the last bit Aurick felt the tension drop in his shoulders a bit. "Am I...?" The Lightning man looked at Harakan and had to study on the question far longer than he should have. "I don't...really think that I am, to be honest. No one's asked so I'm not sure how to answer." He gave an awkward little half laugh. Did he really have a choice in the matter? Even if he wanted to be 'not okay' someone had to make sure everyone else was. He could dwell on it when they were settled. "The farm's just up this way. You can't see it now, but right up around that curve it'll be all you see." Taking the lead this time, Aurick started out on his way.
