She slowly put another bite into her mouth as she heard him say she wasn't doing it on purpose. Her eyes watched his hand come across to her in offering and the form slid out of her mouth with some hesitancy. She reached across and took his hand, grateful that he was willing to give her comfort on her failings. "I do though, if you were with someone else then you would have kids by now." Riya had been dwelling a lot on the what if's lately. Lowering her eyes to the table she lowered her voice a bit. "Maybe you should think about finding a mistress or something to give you a child..." She was ashamed to have that way of thinking and a part of her hoped he hadn't heard her. Or that she could take the words back, but they were already out.

With someone else? He felt the tension ripple across his back, knowing the same thought had crossed his mind. However, the opposite had also danced in the back of his head. What if he was the one causing the delay? After all, his parents had been older when they'd had him and Kaygon. Would Riya have kids by now if..? ..He didn't dare voice such concerns though. Giving it words made it all too real. "Maybe.. but then I wouldn't have you. That would be worse, I feel." He couldn't imagine having ended up with anyone else, kids or no.
Unfortunately, he did hear the last comment and his whole body stiffened. "What?" He gawked slightly before shaking his head firmly, voice going a little rough. "Don't say that again. I will not do any such thing." Lips pressing, he pulled his hand back and shifted his gaze to the side. He knew some couples got surrogates, but he could only think of his father and the fling that had resulted in his half-sister. The wreck that his family was.. He couldn't let that happen here. Never ever..

She felt him stiffen from where she held his hand. So much for him not having heard her. Riya went to say something, to soothe the sting of her words, but he beat her to it. He also took his hand away from hers. She dropped her gaze to her hand that was now empty, her fingers curling inward, then pulled her hand back to hide it in her lap. After a moment she cleared her throat and got up to take her plate back over to the counter. She was too close to crying and she didn't want Ergon to see that so she needed to busy herself. The herbs weren't going to make themselves so she focused on that. Riya swallowed harshly and measured out the amount she needed to add to her cup.

The sudden distance in the moment was palpable. As much as he wanted to simply reach out and take her into his arms, he knew a little more would be needed. "I'm.. sorry if that sounded harsh. I know we both want children, but I'm not going to go jump into someone else's bed to get them for myself." He leaned forward against the table and ran his hand over his jaw. "It would be like me suggesting you find some other guy for better luck yourself." The words felt horrendous coming off his tongue. The idea of someone else lying with Riya...

She placed her hands on the counter and leaned forward, letting it hold her weight as she closed her eyes. The herbs were left on the counter in front if her. A deep breath was pulled in slowly then let out as she shook lightly. "I don't want anyone else. You were my first and only choice." Her voice was still small but clear. When she opened her eyes again the tears she'd been fighting to hold back had fully formed and were dripping onto the counter. "I'm sorry.. I hadn't meant to ruin dinner." Riya turned her head away and did what she could to wipe the tears away, getting rid of the evidence as best as she could, then went to retrieve her mead. She cleared her throat again, this time to keep her voice from cracking. "I uhm.. I want to keep trying. If you don't mind.. Please."

Despite the turmoil, Ergon couldn't help how his heart warmed with Riya's words. Her first and only choice... "You're the only one for me," he tenderly agreed. Finally, he stood to close the space between them. He placed his hands on her shoulders and squeezed, showing he was there without forcing her to reveal the tears he knew she was trying to hide. "I haven't given up."

She heard him get up so she knew he was getting closer. Riya paused what she was doing so that she didn't drop anything. Upon feeling his large hands on her small shoulders she turned her head so that she could look at one hand. Gently she placed her own hand over his. "Mn. I'm happy to hear that." Riya leaned into his hands just a bit.

Relief spread through him slowly. "All I want is for you to be happy," he murmured against her hair. Eventually, he shifted to rest his chin over their joined hands so that he could kiss her cheek.. and then her ear, and then her neck. "I love you. No matter what."

The kisses that progressed to her neck caused her to lean more into him, her back arching a little so that she pressed against him in suggestive places. "I love you too." Riya didn't think she needed to add the 'no matter what' to the end of hers. It was obvious, right? Her free hand came up to grab his other hand but that one she moved down from her shoulder to her waist so that he was holding her.

A small smile rose and he sighed softly, allowing his hands to be maneuvered around. The lower hand gently slid over Riya's waist and belly, savoring the feel of her under his fingers. "Did you get enough to eat?" His own plate still had quite a bit of food on it, but there was another appetite that was building and starting to take priority over his needs. Food could be reheated, after all!

She only nodded her head to his question. She didn't think she could eat much more at the moment anyways and she could always eat something later if she got hungry. Riya gave a side glance toward the table where her husbands plate remained. "Are you still hungry?" If he was then she could mix the herbs into her drink and down it while he finished. If not then she would have to mix the herbs up quickly. Moving her gaze from the table to Ergon she smiled at him as innocently as possible as she trailed her fingers over the hand at her belly.

He couldn't help smirking when the question was returned back to him. "Mmm, very hungry.." he murmured. His gaze slid from Riya's smile to the mug. It would probably be best to let the herbs sit for a minute to get the most out of the dose. With a light chuckle, he slowly let his hands slip free and backed away to the table. All he wanted was Riya's happiness, and that meant giving their attempts the best chance possible for success. It would take patience, but it would be worth it in the end. He spiked a bite of the goose with his fork, but his eyes remained on his wife with adoration and desire. Please, Chi...

She watched him move back to the table, a smile still place. When he skewered a piece of goose she turned her attention to the herbs. Riya quickly mixed them into her drink before she brought it up to her lips so that she could drink. As she chugged it, not wanting to sip on the bitter taste of herbs, she brought her eyes back to look at Ergon. She wanted so badly for this to work for them.

He chewed slowly, unable to help wincing slightly while Riya chugged the bitter brew. There had to be a way for this to work. It couldn't be simply that it would never happen. It wasn't.. wasn't fair. No one said life was fair, but some things should have been off limits! Dragging out this process definitely should have been off limits. He realized she was watching him again, and he pulled his smile back up. "I should get myself cleaned up actually. ..Care to join me?"

When the last of it was down she set the cup on the counter and traced her fingers over the rim. She wasn't sure what to do. That was until he spoke. She brought her gaze back up to him and offered him a soft smile. "Sure." She'd cleaned up a bit when she'd gotten home but it wouldn't hurt to do so again. Her hand outstretched and motioned with her fingers. "Gimmie your plate, I'll put it with mine."
