"I'm sure they would," he assured lightly. "They've never been beyond Oba, so I think they would enjoy a trip. Especially if it meant seeing their nieces."
The image of jumping into a pool of icy water made his skin crawl and he put a hand dramatically over his chest. "I would turn into a grandpa ice cube if I tried to swim in the cold," he gasped out. "I'd need some really warm hugs after to thaw me out!" Younglings were so resilient! Plus the bonus of having grown up in the cold.
Enough? Was she already old enough to be having such thoughts? "I guess it depends what you think 'enough' means, but I'll tell you what. You could be bad at swimming and still be enough for me." He hugged her closer and kissed the top of her head. "You're thoughtful and caring, and that's what matters. Everything else is just something additional to love about you." He wasn't the best with words, but he hoped that they would bolster that wary, hesitant voice.

Nimia melted under her grandfather's affections. She squeezed herself as close to him as possible, carefully wrapping her little arms around him and Precious Baby for a hug. "I just want everyone to be happy and smile so that way no one leaves. I don't like it when they go away." She laid her head against his collarbone.
"I'm happy with Baba and Papa and Fia and You-" Nimia turned her eyes up to look at his. "-even my cousins. I just don't like scary play time. I like this a lot better."

A sad smile rose and Dex shook his head. "Yeah, it's not fun when our loved ones leave. Try to remember though.. I was sad when your papa left here, but he left so that he could find his happiness, which made me happy in the end as well. Sometimes a little sad means something better is waiting around the corner." Not always.. but it was worth hoping for.
His smile warmed. "And I know for sure that they're happy with you. Even without scary play time." He tickled under her chin and hugged her again. "I like this, too. Why don't you go pick out a book for us to read together, hmm? We'll enjoy it a bit longer."

Nimia made a hesitant little grumble of agreement. If papa had never left he would have never met her baba and they wouldn’t have their family. She and Fiadah might be living with others, maybe not so well even, so she was happy things had played out as they did. Because of her fathers willingness to break out of their comfort zones she was here so maybe she just had to be a little more like them.
When he tickled under her chin Nimia giggle and tried to duck away. “Really? I know just the one!” Squirming out of his grasp, Nimia hopped to her feet and went off in search of her favorite book. “Don’t go anywhere! I’ll be back!”

The little grumble brought up a bemused smirk to his lips. Nimia had already known uncertainty and sadness, and he prayed his words were the truth. That any coming sadness, for anyone in his precious family, would merely be the preceptor to give further value to something wonderful. Of course, that didn't meant they had nothing wonderful at the moment. He tickled the youngling's side as she slipped out of his lap, his heart filling with warmth. He was curious what sort of book she would bring back, and he set about adjusting the cushions to make a perfect little reading nest on the couch for the two of them.
