Sonia mimicked his 'pfft' sound and smiled.

"We'll talk about it more tomorrow. Call for me if you need anything." She pivoted on her heel, turned and waved goodnight to him then closed the door with a hushed sweep and quiet click.

For a moment she waited in the hallway before retreating to her own room, the door left ajar just a few inches while she sat on the bed sorting through a few e-mails. A simple task that took twice as long as it should have because her mind kept wandering to places it had no business being yet lingered on simple things that made her smile.

"What am I going to do with you..." Why couldn't they have met under different circumstances? Sonia liked seeing this more human side of him, a stark contrast to the impassive expression, the set forth plans, and order of execution. It gave her hope that this plan of his would work out in the end. That their tolerable existences might evolve into an actual friendship rather than be frozen, or time-locked, in the role of superior officer and subordinate.

At least while not in uniform he treated her as she assumed he treated everyone else. Well, not like the kids he taught, but at least other adults.

Sonia yawned, stretched her arms above her head, and felt the immediate relief when her upper back popped. She set the laptop on her nightstand beside the star lamp and nestled comfortably into her own bed.
