Sylvite's eyes lit up, and her note-scribbling got enthusiastic there for a second. "Oooh, the financial advisor thing sounds cool," she told him. "Like, obviously it's not something I can just set up overnight, but it's a project that me and you can work on together. Plus, I like Captains and Supers to have some project they're working towards anyway. I can keep an eye out for other not-construction stuff in the meantime."

She was pretty sure she could get this guy to like her pretty quick if she could figure out how to get him a job that wasn't construction.

She scooted her chair forwards a few inches, propped her elbows on the desk, and folded her hands in front of her with the pen sticking out from between her fingers.

"As far as other, uh, expectations, I guess, on my end? There's quota, obviously, the regular amount, but you'll turn it into me, now." That was probably pretty obvious but it seemed worth repeating. "Plus, I like to do weekly check-ins like this. So far, Thursday's been check-in night but I can do a different time if that works with your schedule better."

Check ins were the one thing that Sylvite got kinda strict about. Nobody was gonna do this war stuff on their own. Nobody.

...Especially not people with a history of getting themselves into legal trouble. Sylvite already knew she was gonna have to keep an eye on that.

"Does all that make sense?"

So she liked her direct underlings to have projects. Adonis thought he could cope with that; maybe a project could keep him from getting into too much trouble. Plus, stocks were perfectly legal! Maybe pyramid schemes weren't so much, but if he was bending the law in the name of the Negaverse, they might stick up for him and keep him away from the slammer. Or they'd use him for a scapegoat and make bank, he couldn't say.

But he was gonna bet on the former, give the Negaverse the benefit of the doubt. They assigned him to good people, after all. He was sure Sylvite was good people. Her office was covered in pink, and she wanted projects and weekly meetings.

Which, the weekly meeting business was a little less good. Not for the AlAnon vibe it gave him, like he had to be on the straight and narrow, but...

Adonis parked his face against a curled fist. "Problem with weekly meetings is, my work schedule. They want me working sixty hours, sixty weird hours that the job gets to pick — not me — so having a set time on Thursdays is no-can-do. If your Thursdays are pretty open, and we're not looking at a four-hour time block, we might work something out.

"Usually 11PM's a good time, unless it's a road work job. Then, like… 6AM? That's usually when they decide traffic's getting too heavy and we need to wrap up."

All of that was more reason to find a better job.

Oh yeah. Work. Work ruined everything. Work was the reason why Sylvite didn't have wide open slots of time when people could just drop by.

Good thing she was a college student and stayed up half the night most days, anyway.

"Eleven's fine," she said. "Six is less fine, I will not be awake, but, like, you can reschedule if you're working nights, or text me your availability or something."

Instead of scribbling notes about him, she started writing something up for him. She put her name, address, and phone number on a sticky note that was shaped like a panda and she flicked that over towards him.

"I get off work at nine at the latest and I usually do nega stuff for like an hour or two after that, but, like, I'm flexible." Despite what she was saying, she probably would set an alarm for weirdly early if that was what it took to make sure that this dude she'd been assigned was doing okay. "Plus, if we're getting you a better job, we shouldn't have to worry about it for too long."

That would be one little incentive to get him to work on his project, yeah?

Adonis gave her a double thumbs up when she confirmed some of the times for him. Great, so she was willing to make this work around his heinous schedule. It's more than he would've done if the roles were reversed; at that point, anything he had to say could've been an email.

The panda sticky he regarded as incredibly fitting, and also as a cruel reminder that he probably hadn't gotten anybody's number, for any reason, for like five years. At least that was turning around; he might even be able to send her the occasional weird meme or latest work disaster. Last one ended up with a crane backed into a six-foot-deep trench, with all his coworkers lined up and staring at it, and Adrian was behind all of them with the camera. Looked like an awkward family reunion. He tried to put it on a Christmas card.

Things to think about later, he figured. The sticky note info was quickly copied into his real phone and saved with the comment (other boss).

"We'll figure it out." Even if it did end up being an email. So far, Sylvite seemed like a cool boss, especially as far as their shady business went. When the company had him stealing energy, and sometimes lives, it implied a level of acceptance for those actions. And when those things were condoned, higher-ups weren't all that likely to treat their subordinates with much respect. Adonis doubted there'd be many repercussions for a General who demanded a finger whenever someone ******** up. And he could just imagine where it could escalate to from there!

"Is there anything else we need to cover, or are we good?" Not that he'd mind something else, but it sounded like they hit that stopping point.

Later, Adonis would find out that she was big on texting. He'd see that she was just as into emojis as it looked, so, very. Almost every day, he'd get messages full of hearts and sparkles and heart sparkles. Oh, and sometimes animal faces. She also liked the animal faces. He'd see that she thought memes were okay but that she thought big equipment backed into ditches were hilarious.

For now, though, Sylvite just nodded, giving one last smile to her new subordinate.

He was interesting. All the other people who'd ended up under her had been recruited into the Negaverse under weird circumstances, or they'd been trapped right afterwards, or traumatized, or just, like, generally had a bad time, and it showed.

It was kinda a breath of fresh air to be able to work with someone confident, someone who had goals, even if he also had a questionable card habit.

"Yeah, we're good," she said. "Anything else, we can go over as it comes up."

She sat there for a good three seconds, blinking and trying to remember what to say to close things off, before she got it and added, "Um, dismissed!"

Adonis pitched her a salute and a wink. Sylvite was cute as far as Generals went. She was probably just as deadly, given that no General earned their rank and was completely harmless, but he thought the cute thing really worked for her. It was disarming, and he saw that in himself; their meeting felt more like an exchange between friends than it did a briefing between a General and her subordinate. That was a power that no one should underestimate, especially him.

And he could live with that. Sylvite seemed like a chill boss, and he could work with that. He could keep her pleased with his progress, and in return, she could find him a better job. Seemed like a grand old working relationship in the making, to him.

"Aye aye,General," he returned, and he stood and stretched. Maybe it was all the hard physical labor, but he felt that sitting for more than a few minutes at a time caused his body to stiffen up uncomfortably. Once he was sure everything that needed to pop and crack had popped and cracked, he stepped away from his chair, pushed it in, and headed for the door.

For once, he had a boss that he'd look forward to hearing from.
