“So how were your travels, Tyka?” Jhin found the back of his neck warming, the tension in the room growing as both Kyril and his aunt started conversing about things. As the conversations continued, Tyka would interject something about Giya and continued to press the importance of the Oban as a ranger who had worked closely with Jhin. The sly comments were subtle at first until the stories began and he found himself losing his appetite, especially when both Giya and Kyril were trying to catch his gaze at various times. Maybe it would have been best if he had just stayed far away on some foreign patrol this year instead of sitting through this.
He did his best to try casual conversation with the group, but things continued to slip here and there with Kyril obviously doing her best to stay still during his Aunt’s bragging and Giya’s occasional comments about her history as a ranger. Don’t Giya, please.

“Matori should be lovely for the summer. Are you returning?” Tyka continued pressing Kyril, as if looking to see when she was preparing to leave and not accepting that she would be staying. “Jhin is going to be so busy with the caravans but I’ll do my best to help out and look after the girls now that I’m here. How are they by the way?” She blinked her aqua eyes innocently towards Jhin. “I heard they look a lot like you, minus a few features.”
“That tends to happen when someone’s genes are stronger, I had a relative who had a child that looked mostly Oban because their partner’s mixed heritage was too diluted.” Offered Giya with a glance towards Kyril. “It’s strange how things happen like that.”
“Uh huh.” Kyril swallowed as she glanced towards Jhin, but unlike with his Aunt he seemed at a loss whenever Giya spoke up against her. Well this night has been hell. She was so relieved whenever the food was gone and the parties stood up. “I’ll go check on the girls actually.” She managed after helping Jhin move the empty bowls to the washing basin in the kitchen. She couldn’t just blow up at them which was even more frustrating! The look on Jhin’s face whenever he spotted Giya still had her hesitant. How did she dare speak up? What if he defended them instead of her? For the first time in their relationship, Kyril felt uncertain about Jhin’s support for her. What did she do?

“Ah, take care then. It was nice meeting you!” Called Tyka after Kyril as she watched her leave before she looked towards Jhin. “I’ll talk more with you later.” She stated firmly before brushing past her nephew and giving him a firm pat on the shoulder.
“You should.” Replied Jhin towards his Aunt, “Just like you should give her a chance.” He started but Tyka gave a shake of her head. “Tyka…” Why was she being like this? Kyril was wonderful and strong so there was no need to dismiss her like this! It was frustrating and his emotions tangled up even more tightly when he noticed his Aunt glancing towards Giya. Was this the real problem? Did she still want…spirits.
“Later. It’s late so we can discuss everything later.” His Aunt held up a hand in farewell before heading outside. However, Giya stayed and after glancing around to make certain Kyril wasn’t in the room any longer the Oban took a few steps towards Jhin. “You know...I really didn’t think it was true.”
“Giya.” Jhin let out a sigh, “You know that we never truly settled things and then you left for Oba. What can I say? I’m sorry if you were expecting something, but things changed and my feelings developed for someone else.”
“Did things truly change?” Giya reached out for Jhin’s hand and placed it against her chest, a familiar feeling as her soft skin warmed his fingers. “She’s a stranger here, Jhin. Why not just let her leave if she wants? I’m sure someone that high class can easily go back to their comforts without a worry. I’ll help take care of the babies, I don’t care and Tyka is fine with that too. They can be raised to know the forest like we do, but that woman? Can she truly understand everything we’ve endured through the years together?”
“Don’t do this, please.” Jhin’s gaze softened as he lingered there, his body frozen by the familiar contact. It had been over a year since he had seen Giya and she was still as beautiful as before, but there wasn’t that tug on his heart like he had with Kyril. There was the connection of pain and their past time spent together, but did she stir his heart? Either way it didn’t matter when he heard the sound of steps. “Goodnight, Giya.” Managed Jhin as he took a step backwards and gestured towards the door, “Safe travels.”

She had heard. Kyril hadn’t gone that far upstairs and had instead turned back around to grab some warm roots for the babies to chew on. When she heard voices the hybrid woman had stopped to listen and her gaze instantly burned with tears. Was that really what they wanted? Did Jhin want that as well? She had dared to peek around the corner, spotting the two of them standing so closely together, and pain twisted her chest when she watched Giya kiss Jhin before leaving. “I think I may head to Matori.” She found herself commenting as she appeared around the corner, her arms crossed as if protecting herself from whatever response that would give her.

Giya! Jhin let out a sigh of frustration before Kyril’s comment had him instantly twisting and taking a step towards her. “Kyril...did you? Of course you did.” He let out another sigh before glancing over at his companion. “Do you really think I agree with any of that? Please don’t listen to them. They just need time…” He started but he could already see that he wouldn’t win, not with that expression on Kyril’s face.
“I was young and Giya was one of my close friends with Yaloh.” He tried to explain. “We had a thing but nothing really came out of it, especially since she left months before I met you.” Even still he had felt conflicted just seeing her, but he knew that he belonged with Kyril. He just worried that she may not trust him just yet, not after everything that had happened tonight with his Aunt’s commentary and then Giya’s actions. Spirits please don’t let me lose her.

“I know there’s a lot that I still need to learn about the area, but I thought you would have told me a bit more about yourself.” Kyril began quietly, “I didn’t even know this Giya existed until she showed up here and then made moves on you.” A pained laugh escaped her lips. “Was that all it was? I’m just a distraction since you got lonely without her? I need to visit my family and the girls are too young to travel the more dangerous paths yet, so I’ll trust you with their care. Myra has the capramal formula they enjoy and I’m certain others can now help while I’m gone.”
She held up her hand as Jhin tried to approach her. “I’m not abandoning anyone, but I’m taking time to sort out what I need to do. I trust you, okay?” She added softly even though her heart was breaking. “You need to sort through things as well and can’t do that while I’m around to stress you out more. I refuse to hold anyone back from anything, so I trust you to make the right decision for everyone.” For him, for her and for their daughters. Kyril closed her eyes against the thought before turning away once more and heading upstairs. Maybe she truly wasn’t ready for any of this after all.

Jhin’s heart ached as he watched Kyril disappear from sight. It was going to be a trial and he just hoped he was prepared for the challenges waiting for him. She’ll come back, I know she will. If she trusted him then he would have to trust her and Jhin never doubted his belief in Kyril. It was just a matter of time before things would sort themselves out and resolve these issues once and for all.
