Jhin carefully moved Kyril’s ankle, his hands gentle as he inspected the bandages and made certain that they were wrapped correctly. He had replaced the bloody ones last night before leaving her to sleep and thankfully these weren’t dirty which meant the cuts were already scabbing. The biggest worry was the shattered bones but the healer had assured him that those would heal with time. He felt guilty whenever he saw her injuries since she should have never had to put herself in danger like that. His job was to protect those in the forest and once again he had nearly failed, a realization that made his expression falter. “It’s complicated.” He began finally at her question. “This line of work has its dangers so not everyone gets out safely. I’m just thankful that everyone made it out yesterday and I’ll make certain that your ankle heals quickly.”

Ah. Kyril found herself nodding as she allowed him to check over her injuries. The hybrid tucked a pillow in her arms and hugged it while she spoke with Jhin, her expression softening as she felt the pain in his words even if he did try to brush off her question. “You did your best and that’s all anyone could ask for.” She replied quietly, “Honestly if you hadn’t been there it would be more than my ankle.” Kyril forced a laugh. “I’m quite stubborn and refused to let go of my satchel after all.”

Her words froze him and Jhin felt his heart shatter at the commentary. “Kyril…” He began before swallowing and shaking his head. “Next time maybe consider letting the satchel go.” Jhin stated instead once he regained his voice, his gaze staying on her ankle as he refused to let her see the conflicting emotions dancing across his expression. “I hope whatever was inside was worth the risk.” Perhaps his sharp words sounded a bit harsher than intended but he was still processing her words and refused to let her worry over him. This was his hurt to deal with, his insecurities that he would have to battle. Jhin finished checking over her ankle before backing away and grabbing the tray from the table. “Try to rest and I’ll check on you when I return from getting more medicine from the healer.”

“I….” Shame burned Kyril’s cheeks as Jhin chastised her. She had just wanted to try to make him feel better but now he seemed so distant! I suppose I crossed a line. She let out a soft sigh before simply nodding. “I’ll show you later when I’m more rested.” Kyril finally offered as she forced herself to glance after him, his body still turned slightly away from her so that she couldn’t read his expression. As if that wasn’t suspicious enough. The very thought made Kyril’s heart twist in her chest. So much for cheering him up. He already felt guilty enough about her injury that he was willing to take care of her while she recovered and now he wouldn’t even look at her. “Thank you again, Jhin.” She found herself whispering while he walked towards the doorway. “But I don’t regret anything about yesterday because it all worked out.” Stubbornness made her steel her words before she twisted slightly so that she was looking at the wall opposite of him, her head resting on a pillow so that she could try to sleep some more.
Let him try to be stubborn and beat himself up for her injury. He would find out soon enough that she was just as stubborn if not more! A soft humph left her lips before Kyril closed her eyes and tried to sleep despite her swirling thoughts and twisting emotions.

Jhin opened his mouth before simply closing it again without saying a word. If she wanted to try to make him feel better then she could try, but honestly the ranger was at a loss. It wouldn’t be that easy to get rid of his guilt, not after losing Yaloh, and he still blamed himself for her shattered ankle. At least she seemed to have plenty of energy, that much was obvious with how stubborn she was being about things. Jhin let out a sigh of frustration as he turned the corner and started towards the kitchen. It was silly that he even worried about hurting her feelings with his sharp words because she would be out of his life soon enough. Just a week or so for her to heal and then he would escort her to town so that she could head safely home. He would just have to endure living with her until then and then everything would be quiet once more.
