Alya looked at her for a few seconds and then said, “You didn’t turn on me. I know you care about me. And you know I care about you, too. Nothing you did was of your own volition, I didn’t take it personally. I was just worried about you. Still am. But.”

He planted his hands on his hips contemplatively.

“You know, modeling and acting aren’t so different. A lot of the same people dabble in the same social circles. If you want an in, I might be able to help. My agency might be new, but I’ve got a lot of connections. And, I’m just saying, it would be really helpful to have my agency do business with an up-and-coming superstar,” he shrugged, and added, “I’m very good at that sweet talking. You could be my plus one at the next party I attend. Or,” he paused to consider something.

“The Sunrise Theater is looking for a promotional model. It’s going on their website, and is getting a full five by seven foot poster at one of the bus stops downtown. It’s not much, but, you might be able to network a bit if you wanted to stop by with me. It’s on Tuesday, if you’d be interested. The Sunrise isn’t exactly a big theater, but they got good reviews on their last performance. Lot of in-house programs. I think they’re going to go far. There’s a lot of competition in town, but. I’m optimistic.”

For a few seconds Cybele just blinked as a few things fell into place.

He’d offered her connections the first time they’d talked, back when she was still corrupted, but he’d been vague about it then. Now, he was talking about an agency. Oh.

“I did get something part time lined up. It’s on the education side, doing these acting workshops for kids, but,” the carefully polished smile softened into something more wistful as she said, “I wouldn’t mind getting to be on the boards myself, or even on a poster. That sounds interesting.”

It sounded exciting, even. She’d spent the last few months trying her hardest to rebuild her life, doing everything she could to straighten out what she was feeling, and strengthening her relationships so that she no longer felt so alone. She could probably try a bit harder to get what she actually wanted out of her career, especially if there was someone there to support her.

“It would be a treat if I could get some introductions from you, and I’m not afraid of a bit of competition.” She pressed her lips together for a moment, then nodded. “Tuesday? I’ll be there.”

It didn’t take much to bring a smile to Alya’s face, and it was obvious that he was very pleased with her interest in the party. “Good, I’m excited. If anyone can remake themselves from scratch and work their way all the way back up to the top, I know it’s you. And I know you’ve got others helping you out, but if you need anything--or even just want a little help, or support, let me know. I believe in you. I know you gave up a lot to come back--and it’s hard enough to work your way up once.”

He seemed proud of her, but how could he not be?

“I’m glad you’ll be coming with me. It’ll be fun.” Work, still, but it was always easier when you went with someone you knew you could trust. And--he didn’t really have many friends who knew about this side of him.

...It was nice not to have to lie all the time.

"I'm taken care of, Alya," she said, and there was no hesitation there, no confused, thousand yard stare, just a bit of a smile.

"I live in a house now. A house. I can see sunlight coming in when I look out the windows." Admittedly the rest of the house was gorgeous, too. It was a place that she'd felt nervous about going inside the first time she'd laid eyes on it, and yet now that she was settled in and comfortable, the sunlight was what stood out to her. The people, though, were probably what stood out to her the most.

"The family's been nothing but kind. I didn't know people could be that kind, Alya." She blinked. "Of course, you've been, but you also knew me. They didn't. They didn't have anything to gain from being kind to me, but they all took me in that very first night when I was a mess, and then they kept doing spa day and everything they could think of to help me settle in, and then paperwork so I have the same last name as them."

She'd never dreamed that she'd be able to have a family after the Negaverse had destroyed her identity. She'd given up on the concept of having the job she really wanted, as well, but now here Alya was offering to help with that.

"You seem to have more of the connections I'm looking for than they do, though. If you can introduce me to some people at this event, I'd be more than grateful."

She took half a step towards him, still smiling, meeting his gaze as she glanced over her shoulder. "But more than any of that, I'm grateful to have you as a friend."

Alya smiled as she spoke; he didn't seem to take any offense when she said she didn't know people could be so nice--he understood. He understood what it was like to feel like you were on your own. He'd dreamed of being adopted into a family that would have accepted and supported him. He'd even dreamed of taking on someone else's last name.

But.

He'd wound up stuck with his.

"I'm glad you've got a good group of people looking out for you. If you ask me, they're the lucky ones. I feel pretty lucky to have you as a friend, too. Just so you know. So any way I can help out, I want to." A peace had washed over him; he hadn't been worried about meeting up with her but he was glad to hear that she was doing well and it showed in how he carried himself. He seemed to have a little bit of a bounce in his step and he'd been smiling since she mentioned how good her family was to her.

"And you're doing me a favor, too. I'll get to show off all the lovely new talent I've acquired," he teased. He knew he could be a foot in the door, but Cybele had charmed him since the moment they'd met; he had no doubt she'd go far--even if he wasn't there to introduce her.

"All right. That settles it," said Cybele, eyes sparkling. "It looks like you are still good at sweet talking, even after all this time." She giggled, once, and then the mischief faded from her voice. "Thank you, though," she said. "For your words, and for everything."

He'd been worried about her, before. Even more than some of the others, he'd been very concerned about her everyday life and if she was being treated well. She hadn't had context to give him a proper answer when she'd been freshly corrupted. With her memories jostled by purification, she only had so much more context now. She thought she was happy, but seeing Alya smile at her words instead of shaking his head or something unraveled a bit of tension in her stomach that she hadn't known she'd been carrying.

Cybele went silent for a moment, turning her attention to the streets around them. She'd seen a single group of teenagers out of the corner of her eye, but that was about it.

"Do you think there are youma around?" she asked. "It might be better if there's not, actually. Just walking like this is jostling my shoulder a bit." She nodded towards the bandages.

“I hope there aren’t youma around,” Alya answered honestly. “If you’re injured, you should be taking it easy. I’ve half a mind to tell you we should just power down, go get some coffee, and watch the stars until it’s time to go home and go to bed.”

But, there were always benefits to being powered--amongst them, he’d noticed, he always seemed to heal a little faster when he was powered up.

Not that he’d been letting himself get hurt recently, but poor Cybele seemed like she was always sporting some injury. “You work so hard,” he said, because the thought came into his head before he could really process if he wanted to just think it or speak it. “I need to figure out how to make my magic heal people if you’re going to have bumps and bruises every time I see you. I might as well be useful somehow! But, here. Let me give you a hug. A gentle one, so I don’t hurt that shoulder any more. Thank you for being you, Cybele. I appreciate you so much.”

"Do you think we should stop?" asked Cybele, voice a bit softer, no hint of annoyance there, just complete trust. She paused and glanced down, as if after all they'd talked about, this was the difficult thing to say, then added, "We can. I'm starting to realize I'm not the best at knowing my own limits."

That much was probably made obvious by the fact that she'd come out to fight while nursing a stab wound, but despite all of that, Alya seemed to trust that she wasn't being reckless more than he likely should have.

Cybele was not really the type to initiate contact, but when he reached out to her, she took a half step forward and leaned into the embrace. He didn't jostle her, and she stayed close to him for a long moment. "I just hate to think that Chaos might be out there hurting more people," she whispered, eyes fluttering shut, "But it seems like things are safe, just for this moment."

Alya paused for a moment and looked at her, maybe realizing how much she seemed to trust him. Which was good, if she was pushing herself harder than she needed to. He held her in the hug for as long as she would take it, but never kept his arms so tightly around her that she couldn't draw away when she was ready.

“I think, we’ve both been out and patrolled around a bit. We wanted to make sure the area is safe, and you know? I think that if we look for a while and don’t find trouble, that’s a good sign that we can rest for a bit. We can’t keep looking until we find trouble, or we’ll never rest. And you need to heal. I know it’s hard,” he said, and he meant it.

He’d stayed up at night with a guilty conscience, wondering if someone was getting hurt because he wasn’t good enough.

“...This whole Senshi thing doesn’t come with a manual. But the world won’t stop moving if you take a break. You don’t have to look for someone else to rescue. Sometimes you can just rescue yourself. It still counts as ‘helping someone’ if you’re helping yourself. Besides, i I came out all banged up, would you let me try to fight youma or would you send me home to bed?”

His embrace was nice, even comfortable, but Cybele still pulled away when she started feeling like it was drawing on too long. She shot a thin smile at him, instead.

"Oh, if you'd gotten hurt, I'd very much be telling you to go to bed," she said. "It'd be your choice, ultimately, if you wanted to come out anyway, but I'd be telling you all about these new things I'm learning, where you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else."

To be fair to Cybele, she had been trying to take care of herself just by asking for his help on the patrol, but she'd apparently miscalculated just what it was that she needed. With a small nod, she powered down. The sundress she was wearing today was in much better shape than the tattered outdoorsy clothes she'd been wearing at her purification, and she shifted slightly to show it off, to try to show that she was better even if it meant that people were after her.

"I'll go home. Do you want to come see the house?" If he was still worried, maybe that would help him see that she was taken care of.

Alya laughed and nodded; as Cybele powered down, he did too. “I would, but I don’t want to intrude. I don’t have to show up so late, but we should do a lunch date or something sometime. I know you’re in good hands.”

She was with people who cared about her and had the means to take care of her.

“And your dress is very cute, very good choice,” he complimented; he knew his hair was a little messy; he had a lot of it to deal with and by the time he was powering up he’d usually already had a long day. He was dressed in comfortable clothes, but at least he hadn’t decided to change into pajamas. He wore a long, red tunic shirt and skinny black pants. His makeup was still on, a little faded, but not enough that he was worried he looked bad.

“Thank you for coming out with me. I always like getting to spend time with you. I’m proud of you, and I’m sorry if you ever get tired of hearing me say it. I don’t think I can stop.”

Brielle beamed at the compliment, fluffing her skirt a bit more. He was more apparently very involved in the world of what looked good, so he would know.

"True, I suppose it's late for visiting," she said, only looking a tiny bit disappointed. After all the walking around they'd done, the best idea probably was just for her to take a quick shower and collapse in bed.
"You should stop by some other time, though. They're all very good hosts."

Maybe he wouldn't end up truly adopted the way she'd been, but it was difficult to walk through that door without feeling welcome.

"Thank you for answering my text, and for always being so kind," she said, and her smile was small, but a bit soft, like perhaps his compliments were getting through. "If you keep saying that, you'll just have to get used to me calling you kind back. Or nice, or sweet. I suppose I can mix it up."

The smile quirked to one side as she stepped away. "I'll text you when I get there, all right?" she said, and turned a corner.
