Aiden scanned the area, as if close scrutiny could determine exactly what areas of the dark building were the most dangerous and should be avoided. Everything about the building screamed that they shouldn’t be in there...

But he’d been curious from the beginning. He didn’t regret coming in.

He didn’t understand what he was looking at, but whatever force had ravaged this house was fascinating.

“Weird,” he deduced, still taking in every little detail he could as he stood nearer to Laike. He pursed his lips and then nodded slowly. “Yeah,” he decided. “I think it counts. It seems like it’s as close as we’re gonna get, anyway.”

"Okay." Laike rubbed the back of his neck. Didn't know what it was, didn't pretend to understand it. What was there to understand? They just had to clean up some ash and the wish was granted.

Even if they were in a private establishment and basically breaking and entering. Wishers can't be choosers, he guessed.

He squatted down closer to the stuff touched it with a finger. He couldn't decide if it was ash or dust; it seemed between the two. "You want to do the honors?" Laike asked, looking up at Aiden.

Aiden didn’t really seem to know where to look in the house; the warm summer night almost made the house feel a little less spooky.

Almost.

There was something unnerving about it, and not just because they were trespassing. He wasn’t worried about getting caught, but he didn’t know what it was that was making him so uneasy about the place.

“Is there something honorable about this?” he asked, but he supposed it was for a wish--and was it really so bad to clean up a mess? It’s not like this was obviously some spilled urn or something, it was just a puddle of--well, something.

It was close enough to dust, it had to count.

“I don’t mind sweeping it up if you can open up a bag for me?” he asked; he adjusted what he was holding and held out the bag even as he positioned himself to sweep the mess up. “This place feels weird. I like a good adventure,” he clarified, because he wasn’t scared, he just wasn’t quite sure how to organize his thoughts on this place. “Although, I’m not superstitious or anything. You?”

"I doubt it? But uh, it's the thought that counts?" Laike wasn't an expert on chivalry or anything, but he suspected 'breaking and entering' outweighed the potential good of sweeping up a mess. Nevertheless, he took hold of the bag, gave it a few vigorous flicks, and rolled it open for Aiden.

"I like laying on the couch," Laike offered in return. "I've never seen a ghost? But my grandma raised us on a whole lot of ghost stories." He leaned the bag out once Aiden scooped together a bunch, not wanting to get the dust on himself. Guan Yu's daughter came to mind, but he guessed that wouldn't be a very relatable story. Wasn't even this century or anything.

"Our ghost stories were mostly sad, though. It doesn't feel sad here — more like something's going to happen." Not foreboding, but anticipatory. Maybe. Laike wasn't sure he nailed that one.

”Yeaaaah,” Aiden drawled, more suspicious of this place now that he’d seen the inside of it. They’d found ashes, but he was pretty sure this definitely didn’t count for whatever mission they’d been tasked for. It didn’t really even occur to him that maybe there was a very good reason that they weren’t supposed to be in here--what if this was a crime scene? What if they were tampering with evidence, or inadvertently leaving behind their DNA, or what if something was creeping around the corner and waiting to jump out?”

...Aiden really wasn’t superstitious. This place was just creepy.

He’d finished sweeping it up--or, at least, as much of it as he’d felt they needed to in order to complete the task.

He gave the room one last look over before turning his attention to the cleaner spot on the floor.

“Well. I guess we did a good job with that. We should get out of here before someone calls the cops or something, I guess. I hope you made a good wish at the Tree, for all the work this one was.”

At the end of the day it wasn’t a bad wish to grant--just, weird.
