“Try what?” she asked. “Fighting you?”

Ganymede shifted her weight occasionally, to one foot, then the other, a soft scrape of one of her tall heels against the pavement. Other than that, she made no move, simply stood where she was, watching him, on her guard but unaggressive, at least as far as she carried herself. The things she said and the tone of her voice might occasionally offer a different story.

“I don’t have any interest in fighting you,” she said, and meant that. Ganymede was only a fighter because she had to be; it wasn’t natural to her otherwise, unless one chose to equate argumentativeness with the desire for physical combat.

“You haven’t given me a reason to bother,” she explained. “Yet.”

She thought he might, at some point; he struck her as the sort for combat. He’d earned his rank somehow. Tonight, however, she suspected he didn’t have it in him. Maybe he had the desire, but if he didn’t have the energy to teleport, he didn’t have the energy to take her on at full strength.

“If you want me to leave you to your loneliness, I’ll leave,” she offered, “but if I catch you harming anyone, I won’t be as lenient. That includes stealing energy. Find somewhere to rest, then return to your lair once you’ve recovered.”

Shame that she hadn't wanted to try. She was right, he knew; the flamecraft General hadn't the energy, the wellness, to fight off anything. Marginally more active than a stage four cancer patient who was bedridden, he couldn't hope to even entertain this gaudy royalty. A shame, that. He had yet to see any of their Royals in action.

"Hey," he hissed. "Never said I was lonely." He huffed, already finding this one rude and assumptive. The White Moon must promote for that sort of thing. Are you a ******** b***h? Congratulations, here's your wings. Don't forget to burn bridges on the way out.

Sounded like she wanted to leave, and Faustite didn't mind her doing exactly that. But first, a desperate last try before he wrote his efforts off as wasted:

"One more thing, Princess." Faustite straightened from his slow slouch, rapped his fingernails on the pole. "Seen an eternal named Cybele? Last I knew, you faced her down during that operation.

"Then you can leave." Sooner the better, since she wouldn't share her energy. He dreaded the time he'd have to spend recuperating, however; what a chance to get ambushed.

The hissing drew a small smirk onto Ganymede’s face. Cautious as she was whenever she met the higher ranking agents, she couldn’t suppress a spark of amusement at this one. The huffy defensiveness seemed childish, highlighting his youth.

And yet the Negavserse often accused the White Moon of recruiting children. It was rather ridiculous to be blamed for such things by a bunch of edgy teenagers in formal attire — too sophisticated for their level of mental and emotional maturity.

Ganymede supposed she shouldn’t judge too harshly. She’d been that young, once.

When the General brought Cybele back into the conversation, speaking her name this time, Ganymede laughed lightly, happy to disappoint him there.

“Having trouble keeping track of your own soldiers?” she said. “Shame. The Negaverse isn’t what it used to be, is it? And now you have one less.”

She let that comment hang there for a few moments, smile spreading wider when she finally added, “I might have seen her, after. She’s safe from you now.”

Faustite didn't know what the Negaverse used to be. To him, it was ever a low-grade sort of shitty. Maybe Ganymede knew another Negaverse, a more threatening Negaverse that emboldened its ranks and commanded levels of loyalty and respect that he hadn't seen before. But for Faustite, when he heard of their losses, they lacked any sort of surprise. With Cybele, it only hurt.

He liked that one. The firestarter clenched his jaw, swallowed his weariness back to its overbright pit.

Lost a youma and an ally, and this one had the gall to taunt him with her stretched smile. It was easier to feel pissed off about it — he could do something with anger, he could act on it — but he couldn't have that anymore. His head ached. He chewed the inside of his lower lip.

"Go ******** yourself." He turned from her, pushed off from the street lamp. His headache raged, and now he had to nurse new letdowns. Friends were for people, after all — Ganymede reminded him well of that.

Bright laughter filled the night air.

“Be careful out there, Chrysocolla,” Ganymede said, pleasant, but with an edge of taunting still. The fingers of one hand wiggled in an impish wave.

She watched him turn, watched him push away from his post, watched his movements as he did so, studying him carefully, allowing his appearance to sink further into her memory.

With the passage of time and the number of agents that came and went, old ones dying or purifying and new ones rising through the ranks, it was not always easy to keep track of them. Their names, their positions, their influence, she was constantly learning and relearning. Many of her old foes were gone; in most cases, their departure from the war was a mystery.

She wanted to remember this one. He intrigued her and amused her in equal measure.

When it seemed as if he was done with her, Ganymede began to drift away. One step, and another, walking backwards to keep an eye on him for as long as she could.

She wasn’t so naive as to think he wouldn’t find someone to drain as soon as she lost track of him, but she hoped, with the threat of her nearby, he would keep his efforts to the bare minimum.
