“Hm?” She gave her daughter a small glare at her laugh then looked back at Lynx. “Well, no I suppose you don’t have to but keep in mind she took the time to make the food for you.” She smiled softly at the boy. “If she is taking that much time then she considers you special to her.” She could still remember how special Bushi had become to her in such a short amount of time. When she cooked she always wondered if he would enjoy it. It was how she knew she had feelings for the man.

She paused as she peeled the carrots and looked at her son. Had a girl already tried to give him food? Was that why he was asking? She had asked her brother if he knew of any girl her son was around or interested in. She studied him for a second before she went back to her task. “You should at least decline politely if you are not interested, don’t just say ‘ew’ or ‘no’. It could hurt her feelings.” As much as she didn’t want her children to be that grown up she knew it was likely to happen.

“Huh..?” He looked at his mom for a confused moment then back at his grandma. “I guess if someone took that time to really make me a meal then I would eat it but that doesn’t mean I like them back. I would just want to be nice.” He leaned against the table with both palms flat down on it. “Or would that be a bad idea?” Was that giving the wrong idea?

She looked at her daughter again, this time with a narrowed gaze as she tried to figure out what it was the girl was thinking. So far she had nothing written on her face but Phae could guess the concerns. Returning her gaze to her grandson she smiled at him. “No, its not a bad idea, but if she shows a strong interest and you are not interested then you should at least let her know.” The older woman nodded her head. “Has a girl cooked for you?” She couldn’t help her curiosity now.

When her mother went straight for the kill on that question her peeling slowed so that she could pay attention to what Lynx said in response. Even though she was pretending to be interested in the meal prep she was trained in to what her child said like any mother would be. She even thought about holding her breath so that she wouldn’t miss his answer.

He shook his head. “No, no one has made me food. Apart from you and mom.” He didn’t thin the vendors counted since it was their job to cook and sell the food. He smiled at his grandma though. “If one does I’ll tell you all about it.” He was sure she would want to know what was made and how it tasted. Maybe she could tell him what the girl was thinking by what she made. Or the spices added. Of course that brought to mind another question. “Is there a secret code to food?”

Knowing that no one had cooked for her grandson made her feel a bit more at ease. She thought he was a bit young to be having a girlfriend just yet. Of course her daughter had found her partner when she was about his age. She was just thankful that Thea had the good sense to wait until she was older to have children of her own. Though not by much. The question about a secret code in food made her chuckle. “Not really.. though I guess you can figure out someone’s mood by how the food tastes.”

She relaxed with the answer she heard from her son. Peeling sped up and she seemed to give a sigh of relief too. As she continued on with her chore she looked at the peelings then at Lynx. “Can you take these out?” She had a small pile but eventually there would be more. And she didn’t want to waste them. She knew her dad’s familiars would enjoy them.

“Their mood huh?” He thought about it. He supposed it made sense. If someone was angry then maybe the food would be spicy? What about sad? Did that mean the food was lacking? Then his mother chimed in and asked him to take care of the peels. “Yeah, I’ll get them.” He pushed off the table and moved over to her to look at the pile. It was small for now. “I’ll wait until you are done with that one.” It would give him a little more to clean up too.

“Yeah.. you can taste the love in the food when the cook is in love or really loves their job.” She always cooked with love, it was her secret ingredient. Or at least that’s what she told everyone. Phae looked back at the food she was preparing as her daughter gave Lynx a task. “Thea, dear, can you also chop up some of the greens there?” She pointed to the small pile beside her.

She smiled at her son as he came to do as he was asked. Her head gave a small nod when he said he would wait until she was done with the carrot she had in her hand. Of course she looked at the greens then at her mother before answering. “How much? Or would you like them all chopped?” She never had an issue with helping her mother cook. It had been her favorite thing as a little girl.

“Love huh?” He remembered his grandmother claiming such a thing when he was younger. She still did actually. “What about anger? Can you taste that in someone’s food?” Just how complicated was cooking? To him it looked fairly simple. Take some stuff, add it together, and heat it up. Then again, usually anything he made came out bland.

“About half would be fine.” She answered Thea first then turned her gaze to Lynx. “Anger huh?” She thought about it for a second then nodded. “I suppose so. Either the food will taste horrible or it might even be slightly spicy to the taste. If it’s horrible then they simply don’t want to be cooking or don’t want you eating their food. If it’s spicy then they want to get back at you for something.” At least that was how she would interpret such.

Being told that half would be enough she nodded her head and finished up with the carrot before moving on. Taking half the pile of greens she moved it over to be in front of her before she put her dagger to work. As she did she thought about the fact that she would need to both sharpen and clean her blade before she put it away. It wasn’t meant for food prep after all. “Alright Lynx, you can take the peels.” She motioned to the small pile beside her so that he knew, though she didn’t think he’d miss it.

“Makes sense Grandma.” He nodded his head then looked at the pile his mom wanted him to clean up. He was quiet with his own thoughts as he scooped the peels up into one hand. “I’m gonna put these in Profit’s dish.” The other peels could be for the bushi that his grandfather had. With that he walked out the back door to find the Kinfa’s dish.
