Alya managed a little smile, sad as it was, when she patted his back and gave her condolences.
As soon as she powered down, so did he; he didn’t quite have the same strength in this form, but he just had to inhale, exhale, and then he took a few steps forward. He was still dressed nicely from his day out, and looked like the model he was supposed to be.
“I can carry you for a little while longer, I’m okay. I’m not going to make you walk if I can carry you. You look a little roughed up. I’m sorry about her, she’s not usually like that. I wish you got to know her before the Negaverse got to her. But she’ll be okay,” Virell promised. “She’s strong. I’m not going to give up on her. Or you, let’s get you home. Are you going to need first aid or anything, do you want me to call someone for you? --Call for pizza, even?”

"Oh, I met her," said Sadie, deciding not to mention that the Senshi of the Hunt had struck her as a little sharp and harsh, even back then. "I was there. Um, when she was ambushed." Her lips pressed together, thin as thin, and her voice went soft. "It was brutal." The scar on her own back had just recently faded all the way to white. "I don't know much about how corruption works, especially in situations like that, but I'm not surprised her head's all twisted up." She tried to lean in even closer to her friend, to be as comforting as she could when she was like this. "It's not far," she said, nodding towards a building at the end of the street. She hadn't been out wandering. She'd just gone to the closest park to think for a little. "I'm tired, mostly. I think I just need sleep. Maybe some bandaids." She glanced towards her wrist.

”If you trust me to come in with you, I can help. I don’t want you to be alone if you need someone.”
Like how she had given him a little bit extra of her time when he needed someone.
“Bandages, or a bedtime story. I can be there for any of it. But,” he hesitated, and his brows were knit; he was still carrying her without any visible difficulty, so it seemed that his distress came with his thoughts. “...You were there when it happened? ...Can you tell me? I’ve been worried about her, since the first time I ran into her like--well, like that. She’s not herself. But. Sometimes it seems like there might be just enough of her in there. She hasn’t attacked me. In fact, she’s been rather lenient altogether, considering she doesn’t remember who I am. But...I want to know what happened to her. I don’t know if she’d tell me, if I asked. I don’t know if she’d even remember. But I didn’t think she’d go willingly into the Negaverse, so I can’t help but hope that there’s a way to get her out…”

"I trust you," she said. She was as relaxed as she could be in his arms, given the circumstances. It was just that she didn't want to make people worry about her. If they were kind because they worried, it could start to make the guilt rise, but she was aware that it was an unhealthy thought process, so she whispered, softly, "Thank you." The building was locked at night. When they approached, Sadie pulled the key card from her pocket to get them inside, then gestured for him to let her down so that she could unlock her apartment, too. The halls seemed empty, but she still kept her voice low as she said, "Well, I'm not certain what happened to Cybele. That night's all blurry. There was this General, and I, um, ended up in the hospital." She realized too late that talking about that might make him worry, too. Quickly moving on, she squinted, trying to put the thoughts she'd had when she'd first seen Cybele into words, even though things were all blurry now, too. "It was her training event that was attacked, though, and they were taking prisoners," she managed. There were enough pieces to start putting together a very sad puzzle.

Virell was quiet for a moment, and it was clear that he could put the pieces together. She probably got taken while trying to protect everyone else. He couldn't imagine her backing down from a fight; she always seemed like she was fighting to do the right thing. She wouldn’t have let anyone get hurt for her, not if she had a chance to protect them.
He’d set her down when she asked, but stayed close so he could give her all the support that she needed, and kept one arm hooked around her just in case.
“I’m glad you made it out.”
It could have been worse, he supposed, but it didn’t change the fact that he would worry about her.
“Do you have people you call when things like that happen? A support system, even if it’s just to get picked up and home safely?”

"I think so," said Sadie, nodding against his shoulder. "The silver lining to all this is the lovely people I've met. Like you," she smiled softly, "But others, too. We help each other." She still wasn't always the best at asking for that help, but it was something she was working on. She leaned heavily against Alya as she unlocked her door, but as soon as it was open she stumbled forwards to collapse onto the couch instead. "I don't know if I can hostess so much right now, but there's tea in the cupboard," she said, thinking that in this moment maybe they didn't need to dwell so much on the past. "Um, wine, too. There's fruit and crackers on the counter." She turned so that her face was smushed into a pillow, so her voice came out muffled as she added, slowly, "First aid in the bathroom, behind the mirror."

Virell flashed a quick, appreciative smile when she said he was a lovely person she’d met. He tried to stay close as she made her way in, and closed and locked the door behind him just to make sure there were no surprise visitors.
“You don’t need to play hostess,” he assured. “If you want wine or fruit or crackers, I’ll bring them to you, but don’t worry about me right now.”
Virell looked like he was ready to be busy, to stay busy. He glanced around and took his best guess to find the bathroom, and for as invasive as digging through someone’s personal things, he went to the mirror and opened it to retrieve the first aid kit. He was back at her side in what felt like only seconds.
“All right. At least lay on your back for me, let me see what I can do to make sure you’re not going to fall apart. I always get anxious after a fight, and when I’m left alone, I start thinking about all the things I should have done differently. All the things I did wrong. I want to make sure you’re comfortable and have everything you need to be okay.”
He needed a distraction to stop thinking about Cybele, too, so busying himself tending to her was two birds with one stone--help her, and help himself.

There was a muffled, barely intelligible protest from the pillow, something about how she could worry about him, and she was a little worried. He might not have been touched, physically, but it had been his friend that had been taken by Chaos. She would have wanted tea or maybe even wine after all that. Worried or not, Sadie did not move. Her couch had been picked for comfort and was set up as a nest of soft things. Sadie sunk deeper and deeper into it, and she felt herself beginning to drift even in the few seconds that her guest was gone. His voice brought her back, and she turned over as requested. She winced when she offered her arm for him to look over, although the nail marks on her wrist were the only visible wounds. "You were good," she murmured. "You got through to her, somehow. I think this is the best way that the situation could have turned out." She reached out to rest her other hand on his arm. "And if you don't want to be alone, if that makes you anxious, you can stay here as long as you want."

Virell glanced at her when she rested her hand on his arm, and he managed a small, reassuring smile. “You have a big heart. I can’t keep calling you Pendour, not when you’re like this. I forget if I told you my name, I’m Virell.”
He placed his other hand over hers and gave it a little squeeze before fishing out some peroxide and a wipe. “I’m just going to clean these up. I don’t think they even need bandages, but. Better safe than sorry, at least when germs are concerned. I won’t keep you up, you look exhausted. I’ll get you some water, at the very least. I can tell you’re not very good at letting people fuss over you. I’ll have to come over more to help you practice.”
His fingers moved deftly and it was clear that he was functioning with purpose, because very shortly after that, he was gently trying to clean up the marks on her arm.
He didn’t disagree--this was the best way the situation could have turned out. At least, with Cybele seeming thoughtful. He didn’t want Pendour to be hurt. She had enough scars already.
“...I just want you to know that I think you’re very kind. I’ll go home and worry, I can’t help it. I might be happier knowing that you had someone here to make sure you had everything you need, but I won’t impose. If all you want is someone to tuck you in and lock the door behind them when they leave, I can do that, too. I just want you to be okay.”

Oh, Sadie was too used to people fussing over her. Having a caring family and taking multiple trips to the hospital with unexplained injuries had that effect. People had spent so much of their precious time, so much of their emotional energy, worrying over her, and the guilt built up. It wasn't something to lay on Alya, on Virell, though, not now. "It's Sadie," she said instead, watching sleepily as he dabbed at her wrist. There was a moment of silence, and then she added, softly, "You know, you're going to make such a good dad." She peeled herself from her nest of pillows until she was sitting up straight, and when he was done, she stood with what looked like intense effort. She used his shoulder for support at first before switching to the wall, and she looked back over towards him. "You're saying all these sweet things about me, but you're the one who carried me home," she said. "I just want you to be okay, too." She finally flashed a soft little smile. "If me being okay, if me taking care of myself will make you feel better, then, um. I'll try." On other nights like this, she'd collapsed right into her couch and not moved until the morning, but now she vanished into the bathroom and emerged a few minutes later in a set of pajamas, with her hair braided back and her teeth brushed. The apartment was a studio. The bed was just on the other side of a divider half-wall, and she headed there now to sink into yet another mountain of pillows. "Okay," she said, glancing around back towards Virell and the kitchen. "Water, right?"

Virell seemed almost taken aback when she said he’d be a good dad, not because he was offended but because he was so surprised by it. He was temporarily stunned by her words, so much so that he didn’t even think to speak before she’d returned in her pajamas. He blinked up at her when she spoke and nodded. “Water, right,” he agreed, but he couldn’t even remember what they’d been talking about.
He shook his head and pushed himself up. “Sadie, you don’t have to be fussing around. You’re the one that got hurt. If it had been me, I know you would have carried me home and looked after me, too. You’re the one that helped me when I was in that hole,” he reminded. “So really, you started all this.”
But, this was more than just paying back a favor; he cared about her. He’d lost Cybele, and maybe he’d become a little more aware of just how easy it was to be plucked out of your life and thrust somewhere else. Maybe he felt just a little more protective now than he had when he woke up this morning, just because he’d seen what the Chaos could do to someone sworn to fight it. If they could have gotten to Cybele, couldn’t they have gotten to anyone?
...Wouldn’t everyone be safer if they had someone just a little more protective watching their back?

"Not fussing," Sadie murmured, taking a pillow in her arms. It was true. Any walking around to try to hostess or even to take care of herself was over now. The last of her energy was spent and she was not moving from this little nest for several hours. She did adjust her position, though, enough that she could peer over at Virell with her good eye. "Kindness isn't some one way street," she said. "You were asking about my life, too, in that hole. You were sweet as sweet. That means I can try to be here for you." She nodded, although even her small motions were softened by the tiredness, now. She waved a hand, as if that would fill in the gaps in what she wanted to say. "That's, um, friendship." Her eyes fluttered shut, but she fought against sleep for a little longer, because she was thirsty. "But, um, can you get me water?" she asked.

“I’m going, I’m going,” Virell sighed heavily, pushing himself up. He might have said more, but she looked exhausted, and he felt bad for dragging this out for as long as he had already. It wasn’t difficult to navigate her kitchen, and he pulled out a glass, filled it with a bit of ice and fresh water, and then returned to her side. Carefully, he pressed the cup into her hands, and he hovered nearby to make sure he could take it and set it somewhere safe when she was done.
He sat down on the ground again while he waited, but even as he did that, he leaned against the couch.
“...Wow. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get up. I really just want to pass out right here and sleep until the sun comes up. I never thought sleeping on the floor would sound so appealing.”
He tilted his head so he could make sure she didn’t need him to take the glass.
“...You’re a really good friend, Sadie. I just wanted you to know that. You’re very wise, and you say very kind things. And I really like being around you. I just wanted you to know.”

Sadie held the glass of water with two hands, as if it were impossibly heavy, but she managed a few sips before she set it on the bedside table. Within her nest of blankets, she wriggled a little until her feet were all the way covered, and then she lay flat again. "You're a good friend, too," she said, voice slightly pillow muffled. She smiled down at him for a second, and then she closed her eyes. Now that she was safe and taken care of and in a bed like this, there wasn't much fighting the sleep. "The couch is open, if you want to stay," she murmured. She had the bed claimed now, but the pillows and blankets on the couch were just as nice, and there were even cushions scattered around various parts of the floor. However, Sadie would not see if Virell took advantage of any of that. Within a few seconds, she had drifted off.
