See, Rosamin's strange dislike of handling fresh meat was something Saira had never been able to empathize with, nor something that had been easy to mitigate. It was as if the girl had thought she was a parrot rather than a hawk or something - unfortunately for her, however, they needed vast quantities of meat to survive. It only stood to reason she'd have to be able to kill and clean her kill on her own.
Actually, Saira used to get scolded on occasion while she hunted due to eating the meat raw. Mother Shah never stood for that - apparently it carried a disease risk or something.
Cooking took more time and effort and was easier to mess up than raw. But, for her mother, she put up with it and continued to do so to this day. Last thing she'd want is for her to finally return home and only find barbarians.
Her arms were still crossed as she nodded and continued to look at the fire. "It's good you can smell when it's ready by now - keep this in mind - but the visuals of the fire are just as important for knowing when it is ready. Pay special attention to the color of the embers, the intensity of the flames, and the amount of ash on the wood." She really was quite eloquent for a harpy due to her upbringing. It was something she was rather proud of, in fact. "And remember, different fires are needed for different purposes. Your fire for smoking is different than this one for cooking or those for making charcoal." They didn't often do the last on that list, but it was something she'd been experimenting with to add to their trade to Breeheart. She'd become quite fond of their niceties since they'd begun more actively speaking.
As she finished her monologue, she glanced over to make sure her wisdom was being digested properly, much like they would do to these fish soon. "You've grown better at cleaning them," she noted with a flick of her eyes to the prepared fish. "Remember to prepare the heads and guts for later." Dream WhiteWitz This preparation would involve salt-curing the heads and innards before placing them in a barrel to ferment for 1-3 days and then sun-drying. If you think they're running out of salt, they can be simply fermented with significantly less for a longer period of time - your choice.

Rosamin, for a second, thought she went completely deaf or maybe perhaps she lost her mind when Saira had compliment on her cleaning skills of the fish. The harpy blinked, her heart leaping up into her throat metaphorically. Although she was not that skilled at handling a sharp instrument in which to slice and dice the meat, separating it from the skin, she was trying her best to practice on rather... less complicated protein sources. Fish seem to be one of them. Her face took on a complicated emotion of pride and of being unsure if it was real, but at the moment, both went away before a wall went up.
"Yes, mama," the young harpy murmured, giving a nod as she looked to the heads with its dead eyes and the guts that she took out from the cleaned fish, just sitting there all.. gross-like. Yick, she mentally thought to herself. "Salt 'em?" she asked quietly, looking around for the bag of salt, muttering to herself as she peered around, lifting a few objects of worth to find that darn bag of salt they always keep around for meats. She swore they traded noteworthy objects to gain the bag of salt. "Hrm..." she sighed to herself, cocking her eye about. "AH!" the colorful harpy trilled, most happily as she pranced about to the location. She found it! That she did indeed and what she did? She danced in place joyfully.

Saira raised a brow at Rosamin's obviously-dejected response, still finding it unfathomable how she disliked some things so intensely. Even her idiot sister and her chicks handled it better. Really strange, that it was. Perhaps they had waited too long to introduce Rose to hunting? Or maybe it was Breeheart to blame...
"Yes, we salt them, then we place it in the bucket... Or wait a second..." She crossed her arms and closed her eyes to think - it had been some time since they'd had to preserve fish, so her memory was faltering. She shook her head. "No, no no no... We dry them in the sun first, then we salt them and place them in the buckets with some water, or we can smoke them instead." Yes, there were many ways they could keep this fish edible for the foreseeable future. Looking over at Rosamin doing her little happy dance, she decided to give the girl the decision. Ideally, she needed to be at a point where Saira didn't need to lift a finger for her to do all of this. "So which shall it be - fermentation or smoking today."

Rosamin looked taken back, as if widely surprised by the options that were given to her. She was the one to make the decision on what to do with the remaining fishes The young female harpy took a long glance at Saira to make sure that she was hearing her correctly, lest she gets another brittle glare in the near future. She took a deep breath and took a moment to herself before looking to the older female harper with a firm answer. "Ferment them for storage," she murmured, giving a nod as she moved over to push the chopped off heads and guts into a bowl for preparation for the fermentation stage.
"Definitely fermenting, mama. I let you know when it is done, mama. Go go," the young female harpy said, blinking rapidly twice before turning away from the older female harpy.

Saira nodded once in acknowledgement of Rosamin's decision and took a step back to observe how she was going about the preparation. Once satiated with her progress, she offered a parting, "Don't get too caught up on the preparations - keep mind of the fish roasting first and foremost. The heads won't go bad if you have to finish after everything is cleaned up," before exiting the cooking hut and instead moving to rest in her perch in their little homestead.
