Kisa
The Beacon of Light

It was another beautiful day in Aquaria--The sun was bright and shining, the castle was lit up with lanterns, the city was bustling with commerce and excitement. Everyone had been working hard to make this day extra special in the capital city. Today was the day that royalty from Reseria arrived to Aquaria for discussing an alliance of nations. It was a big deal, because there was only one single child of the Aquarian King, a daughter. And so it was only her that could complete the demands of the Reserian King…. Her hand in marriage, to one of his sons.

Kisa smiled nervously at her reflection in the mirror as she double checked her appearance, nit picking little details... Her pastel purple and turquoise hair was tied up in an asianesque updo, with a hair pick. Around her forehead she had a pretty chain with a moon affixed in the center, making her look like she was wearing a tiara of sorts. But the part that made her the most anxious was the beautiful blue silk kimono that was wrapped around her curvy form… she had re-tied the sash around it many times over, trying to make sure it was perfect. It was a big deal in her culture to adorn one of these, it wasn’t normally how she dressed, as it was very formal in nature. She couldn’t remember the last time she had worn a kimono… it was typical for royalty to wear them, but she spent most of her time in her uncle’s church…. She wasn’t used to the ways of royalty, despite the fact she was the King’s only living child. But today….

Today was different. Today was the day the Reserian King and some of the Princes were coming. For dinner. And meet his demands. Or else. It almost felt like a day of mourning, deep in her heart, because she knew what was about to happen….

“Kisa… My child… I wish not to ask this of you, but I don’t have a choice… The Reserian Empire is very angry with us… we haven’t been able to keep up with their demands… I’ve made a mistake… a grievous one... and now....” Her father was looking terribly guilty, gently taking her hands in his. “Reseria demands we show our allegiance… or something terrible will happen… my execution... maybe even all out war… And you know our people cannot live through that…”

“Our allegiance…? But Father, we already do that… we give them our land, our food… what do they want now…?”

“Your hand in marriage, to the prince. To conjoin the nations… To prove we will cooperate… To prove we take our relationship with their country seriously…”

“.....Wh-.... Th-That’s…”

“He made it very clear. Your hand in marriage to one of his sons…. Or my death. We have to make a choice… Will you do this for me…? For our country...? Will you help your people? It’s the right thing to do...”

“Y… Yes… Of course, Father…”

Kisa readjusted her sash again, taking a deep breathe of air and sighing out softly. She was only sixteen year of age… but she felt this giant burden on her shoulders. She didn’t have a selfish bone in her body; there was no way she would even consider not going through with this. As much as it made her heart hurt to know she had to leave her church… she was only one life, in exchange for their thousands of people, and her Father’s, lives. Reseria was an extremely powerful country… They had modern warfare, something Aquaria greatly lacked. They didn’t stand a chance to stick up to the Fire nation and fight for their freedom… it was either obey, or be killed. Simple as that. So she was happy to be able to save her father, and her people… even at the expense of herself.

The Aquarian elf girl couldn’t possibly fix anything else on her appearance, and made her way down to the courtyard.

It’s feels so weird, being in the castle again… It’s been a while… Kisa thought, as she carefully went down the spiraling steps. She had spent nearly all of her childhood living with her uncle, at his church. She loved living there… She loved that life so much, it consumed most of her entire being. She lived for that church. Being royalty or living in a fancy castle meant nothing to her… I wonder if I have to live in the Reserian castle…?

She smiled softly at the thought of Reseria’s oldest prince, Thorival. He was destined to get married and take the throne, of course, because he was the first born son. She recalled meeting him a couple of times, when he travelled here, and even visited the church. He seems like a good person… maybe this marriage won’t be so bad, after all. I never wanted to marry into the royalty life, but he really values justice and valor… he was training in knighthood… so if he’s anything like I remember, there’s still plenty of hope....

Recalling that, most of her fears vanished. She didn’t know Thorival super well, but she really admired and looked up to him. They had spent a little time in the church together with the other church members. She had heard horrible things about the Reserian people... And what she had witnessed of Reserians herself….. were not pleasant. They had been very demanding, and rude, and some of them even mean. They were all quick to jump to violence. But Thorival was different… he gave her hope for the Reserian people. He had been studying and training for Knighthood, and wanted to help people.

We have similar goals… Why not a marriage? Maybe we can make some real changes together, be a team.... make things better... Things could be way worse than this, maybe this is a good thing after all…. Kisa wanted to hope, and so she did.

Once the gates opened, a carriage came into the courtyard, and soon exitted the royal party. Each was introduced by name, and she smiled cheerfully at Thorival, trying not to seem nervous like she was on the inside. She bowed her head slightly in respect for their Reserian guests, as well did the other Aquarians. Her father gave a warm welcome to their kingdom, and their castle, and soon everyone went inside.

“It’s nice to see you again, Senpai… I hope you’ve been doing well. W-Welcome back!” She greeted him, but very quietly. A rush of the feelings when she met him a while back flooded into her chest again. She had not thought about it until now, but she admired him a lot. He looks so handsome... even in red...

Kisa was careful not to damage her silk kimono as she sat down at the massive royal dinner table in the dining room, adjacent to her father’s seat. She just smiled softly, making sure to listen to their conversations attentively. Remember, don’t speak unless spoken to… She was told to be quiet and just listen unless she was directly asked a question. To just “be silent, and look pretty”.... It was a little insulting, because she was actually a very intellectual person, but there was no way she could chance offending anyone, so she took the rules the noble’s had given her very seriously.

The elf girl gently set her hands in her lap, doing as she was told and just listened politely.

It will all be okay…. right? ...... Moon, please guide my hand…

Thorival Reseria

Sitting in the carriage as it makes its trip through the countryside of Aqueria, Thorival looks out the window, gazing upon the landscape, taking in the beauty of it's coastline and the forests that border them.

Having been told that there will be an important meeting with the leadership of both Aqueria and Resria, Thorival's presence was requested as in that meeting an announcement of marriage will occur. Being the older brother, the thought of himself being married was one... that would be a lot to get used to, as he never even thought about being married once in his life. Being very devoted to his study of being an honorable knight that protects the people, his mind didn't have the room to mull over such... concepts.

With thoughts of marriage fluttering around in his mind, he stares at the sea, watching the waves ebb and flow upon the sand. With the ebb and flow being similar to how life works, he can only wonder who he is getting married to.

Tearing away his gaze from the window, he looks to his left and his gaze is met by his youngest brother Demitrious, who is looking at him. Locking their eyes together, Thorival blinks and then moves to turn his eyes away from his brothers, but not before he notices a glimmer, a fire in those golden eyes as well as seeing a smirk.

When they arrive and exchange pleasantries with the guards, then the King of Aqueria himself. Meeting with them is Kisa, the daughter of the king. Recognizing her as a devotee of the church he has visited a couple times as a devotee of the church, he greets her with a bow and he takes her hand and gives it a kiss.

"I am glad to be here. You look nice in your attire. It is a pleasure to meet you once again."

As they make their way to the dining table, he notices Demitrious just smiling at both him and Kisa, the same smile he has worn since the very beginning of this adventure. Something stirs within Thorival's insides as worry floods his being. Whenever Demitrious smiles mischievously like that, nothing good comes out of it. He only ever smiles whenever he gets Thorival in trouble or causes misfortune to fall upon the knight in training. It always results in Demitrious getting what he wants.

Thorival sits down next to his brother, and watches lazily while his father Alabaster, discusses politics and economy with the Aquerian king. Food is served and he is greeted with high end asian cuisine, some of it cut beautifully. Sushi, rice, wasabi. Seldomly having the chance to experience this dining, Thorival tries to eat as elegantly as he can. Elegance not being his strong suit. When he gets the wasabi he is able to endure the spiciness of it unlike his brother, who just coughs. After he coughs his brother just angrily pelts out insults of the food.

"MY WORD, WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE? Is this what you call fine cuisine? I call this... an attempt on my life! You are trying to poison me!"

"Calm down brother, it's wasabi. It's supposed to be spicy. I take it you haven't had much spicy food? Shocking since we are known to use fire magic, I would imagine you could endure a little... heat."

The corners of his mouth slightly curling in a very very small smile, Thorival looks at his brother, who is red in the face, then to his father who looks at him with nothing but disgust and disdain. The smile goes away after Thorival coughs and goes silence once more.

Thinking to himself:
"I found it funny, their sense of humor is on the insulative side to. Why am I the odd one out?"

With a sigh he looks up to Kisa with a smile and gives out a compliment.

"I always find your culture's cuisine to be exquisite, please give my compliments to the person who prepared this meal for us. I am happy to have experienced the best this country has to offer."

Kisa instantly tensed up as soon as the younger brother prince started screeching about the wasabi. An attempt on his life-!? She squeaked nervously, a small "eep" sound coming out of her mouth but she quickly glued it back shut.

No no no-! We would never do that-! He doesn't really think that, does he-!? She was really worried for a moment. Don't they have spicy food in Reseria? Maybe not sushi, but... Thorival instantly commented, receiving disapproving stares from his family. She had a keen sense that maybe he didn't get along too well with his little brother, or his father... but if that was so, why was Thorival even getting married and taking the throne? She recalled last time she met him that he was training to be a knight, instead of a King.... was he just doing what his father and his people wanted, much like herself?

She was still too scared to speak after she had been told not to, so the young elf just smiled softly at Thorival, and nodded her head in response. She was glad that at least he liked it, but unfortunately it was the King's favor her father desperately needed.... hopefully he was enjoying the food, too....

Thorival Reseria

After they eat for a while, the King of Reseria clears his throat and he stands up, holding an goblet of wine.

"Today is a day that will be a moment to remember. For both Aqueria and Reseria, as unity between the two nations shall be formed through marriage. Your daughter is the only princess that you possess, but in good faith have you shown by allowing us to welcome her into our family.

With the slight twitch of his finger, he aid runs up with a well decorated, ornate box sitting atop a red cushion embroidered with rubies. Alabaster takes it and opens the box, revealing two rings and a scroll. Taking the scroll, he hands it to the King of Aqueria.

"In this is an agreement for trade and other economic boons to help stimulate your country to prosperity, and an agreement for the mobilization of our troops to your borders to help assist your defenses in case your enemies choose to strike at any moment in time. Should they do that, we will be there for you. Now, I will present you these rings and I would like you to state out loud the names engraved in each of them as a formal announcement of who is being married, as I feel like it should be your honor to do so as it will be remembered by all in history. Please take your time reading it.

After he says that, he sits down and places his hand on Demitrious' shoulder, troubled with how he is showing affection to Demitrious.

"Father, you should let me announce it as it is customary for the male to announce marriages... at least be the one to show intent.... I would like to do it formally and correctly for Kisa as it would show her the utmost respect..."

With a very VERY harsh look, Alabaster just scowls at the knight in training then smiles. A hint of sadism in the corner of his lips.

"Who said that it was you who was to be married? Please.... King of Aqueria, make your announcement.."

So it's more... than just my father's life at stake, or avoiding war... much more... maybe if we're thought of as allies they really will help us... instead of starving us... Kisa observed curiously.. This is not how I thought I would be getting engaged... I guess it was stupid of me to think I would be able to get married for love... She felt a ping of sadness and anxiety pierce her heart as she saw the King put his hand on the younger prince's shoulder.... and then it upgraded to full on internal horror as he said, "Who said it was you who was to be married?" It didn't show on her face, except for the undeniable third degree blush bloomed across her cheeks. Please for the love of all that is holy, let it be Thorival! Kisa silently panicked inside, anxious.

After a moment's pause, the King read off the announcement outloud. At the end were the names inscribed,

"Prince Demitrious Von Varibon Reseria, and Princess Kisa Mirai." Even her father's eyes looked somewhat surprised as he spoke it aloud.

The girl's eyes were a bit surprised, but she kept control of herself not to look shocked or horrified. Maybe he's just having a bad day....? Maybe he's nice like Thorival normally... aaa.... what does this mean? Why would I be married to Demitrious, instead of the first born son? It has to be for a reason.... I'm scared... Kisa's heart beat nervously, not sure where this was going.

Demitrious Von Varibon Reseria

After the King of Aqueria reads out loud the engaged parties, Demitrious stands up and gives a bow and extends his hand out for Kisa to take.

"Ahh, Thank you your highness, and father. I am very glad you have reached this decision and I am delighted to accept my part in helping the unity of these two countries strengthen their alliances with one another."

A smirk then forms on his face and he flashes it to Kisa, then he looks to Thorival and the smirk only gets larger.

"Don't worry brother, I am sure there are plenty more of fish in the sea, considering we both know you two have history in working in the church. So sorry but she will definitely be in better.... hands."

His grin forms even larger.

"Kisa, I will take care of you... very... very well.... As long as you take care of me and my desires...."

Licking his lips as he says that, he is openly grinning mischievously.

The elven princess smiled nervously as she took the prince's extended hand. A small chill went down her spine as he talked.... Kisa could feel screaming vibes that Demitrious was being politely malicious to poor Thorival. She hadn't really thought about it before, but maybe having siblings as royalty wasn't pleasant. They seem to be rivals... that's really sad... maybe princes have to compete with each other...? I never really thought about how that works... I had always assumed the oldest child took the throne? she thought, flicking her bright aqua eyes back to Demitrious as he addressed her again.

"I-I promise I'll be a good wife, and take care of you, too, Demitrious!" Kisa smiled at him, genuinely meaning that, in her own way. To her, that meant being there for him, being his partner, making sure he was happy and healthy, as any spouse would. But who the hell knew what Demitrious meant? Kisa was completely and utterly oblivious to any mischievousness, and her father seemed to look away with a guilty expression on his face. What kind of guy was he selling his daughter's soul to?

Thorival Reseria

The world stops as soon as the King of Aqueria reads off the couple to be wed. Demitirous and Kisa? Married? Not..... Thorival himself?

His mouth opens and closes without a sound escaping. Dumbfounded he looks at Kisa, then slowly turns his head to Demitrious. There is no way... That Demitrious... the most... immature.... of the....Married to Kisa... The most purest.... thing in the world...

He then casts his gaze to the food in front of him, heaviness on his chest threatening to cave in, the feeling of his stomach emptying itself as the realization of that this is real floats in his mind.

Having actually kind of liked Kisa, the prospect of marrying a pure being.... was comforting.... No.... It's not a reality now. Focus on his brother being married. Focus on his duty to follow the rules.....

Tears form on the corner of his eyes, not enough where one can see. Constantly thinking to himself about how to focus on Knighthood, focus on being happy for Demitrious and Kisa. Focus. Focus. Focus.

Focus can't come, the feeling of.... knowing how his brother is. Knowing how he treats women, how he views them as mere toys... Resentment grows from the emptiness.

Taking a deep breath, he silences all thoughts and emotions. He shuts off his emotions. The slamming of a cell door symbolizes how much he is shutting off. That's right, no one can love him. For he is in love with the path of knighthood, the path of being just and righteous. His dreams is to become the best swordsman of justice he can be. He will be the pinnacle of all knights and become the first true Paladin of Reseria..... yet why does it hurt so much... to be presented with this?

"Congratulations, Kisa and Demitrious. You two will make a fine couple."

His eye twitches at saying that, knowing that.... that's not right. Slowly, painfully slowly he smiles.

"I wish you a happy married life"

Demitrious Von Varibon Reseria

After they finish talking logistics, economics and how the wedding will go down in Reseria, Demitrious stands at the carriage, waiting for Kisa. Expecting her to have a crap ton of girly stuff since she is a girl princess, his expectations are betrayed when she brings a single suitcase, his eyes widen slightly as an eyebrow cocks up.

"You live like a slave. I have never met a wealthy aristocrat let alone royalty have that little of... belongings. You are not what I expected you to be."

Patting her head, his mischievous smile shows Thorival his joy in insulting both her and in a weird way Thorival. His eldest brother would treat her with respect and dignity and even help the poor girl put her suitcase in the back of the carriage, but Demitrious with his arms crossed leans against the side of the carriage.

"Taking quite a while aren't you? I have a soire to attend to at sundown so we must make haste to home. I will be very... irritated should we be late and my guests be forced to halt their festivities with my lack of presence."

The arrogant prince climbs into the carriage, not even offering his hand to assist Kisa, leaving the job for Thorival to do.

When they arrive in Reseria, Demitrious shows her around the castle lazily. Showing her various stations of maids, the lavish pantry, the dining room which is three times bigger than the one in Aqueria. Shows her his brothers rooms and various guest bedrooms that bear the banners and colors of Reseria. When he gets to the servants quarters, the rough and dated decorations show just how much the needs of the servants are neglected by Demitrious, considering he is the head of Servants in this castle.

"Here is where our servants come from. Should you have any desire, ring a bell on the wall in any room within our castle and a bell will notify one of them that there is service needed at the designated room bell. If they take longer than a minute to get to you and ask what you need. You punish them by removing their rights to dinner. If they continously make the same mistake, you will eventually tell them to join the servants in the basement. They will not like it down there. With that in mind the servants who are in employment here are really well trained and are ready to offer their services. Please use them to your desires as that is their only purpose here in their lives and castle."

After showing her the servants quarters, he takes her to his lavish, extravagant bed room. With the color theme of Black, Red and Purple, his large king sized bedframe with drapes take up only a fraction of the size in the prince's quarters. A large walk in closet to the left of the bed with all kinds of outfits for every occasion bring additional princely feels to this room.

"This is your new room. Your new bed. This is where you will sleep, love and live from now on. You are my fiance so it's okay for you to sleep in the same bedroom. Besides, it would be wasteful if we made accomodations in another room when you are going to be wed and come to my room eventually, so lets cut out the unneeded shall we? Well. What do you think of your new life? Welcome to Reseria!"

Kisa tried to pay very close attention as Demitrious showed her around the castle. Okay, remember, this is the... She didn't want to forget, or seem like she wasn't listening well enough, so she was trying to concrete their locations in her head. It was important to take her new life here seriously, even if she didn't like it. She had to do her best, even when all she could really do was soak in information, for now...

She did her best not to look completely and totally horrified at the sight before her. Her body tensed up, and she could feel the peach fuzz on the back of her neck stand up. A chill ran down her spine. That's right.... Reseria had SLAVERY. She had completely forgotten one of the major nightmares about this country... They kept slaves... It was so awful, to own another human being.... Kisa's eyes swelled up with water, biting back tears just looking at the slave quarters. This.... This is horrible... I..... Her head was starting to hurt just thinking of the millions of reasons how this was wrong. There was NO way she was using any slaves! Besides, she had not grown up in the Aquarian castle for most of her life.... she was used to doing things on her own anyway. I'm so so sorry.... I need to think of someway to fix it.... someway to help... She felt miserable just looking at the place, even though it was empty because the slaves were working currently. But what can I do to help.... I'm in a similar position myself... I'm not in the position to make demands... But she was going to think of something.... This went against her entire religion, let alone her core being.

After being shown his own quarters, the poor princess' face turned slightly pale. Sleep.... in HERE?! Not somewhere else in the room but here on this bed... with him-!? Kisa let out a small squeak in terror at such a concept, her slender elf ears drooping a bit.

"U-Umn... that's... w-wonderful... but..." She fidgeted slightly in place, looking away to the floor nervously. "W-We should wait until after the wedding, when we're married... right...?" She had never shared a room, nor a bed, with a boy before.... and she did not want to start right NOW.

Demitrious Von Varibon Reseria

After hearing the poor Elf talk about waiting until marriage and not sleeping in his bed, an eyebrow cocks up and he makes a sneer of discontent. After a quick moment, he returns back to smiling and wraps his arm around her and pats her head with the free hand.

"Oh dear Kisa you are very very new to the game of royalty and how bedding works. The betrothed are obligated to sleep in the same bed, as it is our custom. Do you really want to... disregard out customs? Have we not been acomodating guests? I have put in oh so much effort to make you feel.... welcome here. Alas, my heart aches knowing I had made the princess unhappy with our culture. Oh woe is me.... I guess I will have to inform father... It's okay though, I understand."

He slowly backs up as he unwraps his arms around her, making deliberate steps. The prince crosses his arms as he gazes upon her, his eyes bearing their full weight of the pressure he is exerting onto her.

"Feel free to sleep in the servants quarters if that is what you want to do, as the other beds are reserved for our guests, important business men and aristocrats visiting for preparations for our wedding. I will have to inform them that the princess doesn't like our customs."

"Eek-!" Kisa let out a small squeak as he scowled and then suddenly wrapping his arm around her. Her legs buckled up, frozen in fear as he explained she was rejecting their customs. For just a split second, the young princess thought maybe he was joking. He had a way of speaking that really threw her off, it was something about the way that he articulated his words. But it was only for a moment, and then reality punched her in the face that he was dead serious. Kisa remained oblivious to the fact that he was, in actuality, toying with her. The clear manipulation went right over her head.

"Aa-! P-Please, no..!" She squeaked out, looking alarmed, "I-I didn't mean it like that, I-I'm sorry....!" She was absolutely terrified of offending him, the King, or their people, considering she was the prize exchanged to help her people. Pissing them off was the last thing she wanted to do. She wasn't sure why that would be something to do with their culture... but...

It doesn't really matter anyway... the wedding in only a week... Kisa didn't want to share a room, or a bed, with a boy, but she was going to have to literally one week from now anyway. She may not have been ready, but maybe she was never going to be. It was what a husband and wife were supposed to do, anyway.... and then the realization hit her that there was a lot more things that husbands and wives did together..... sharing a bed was only the beginning of it.

Demitrious Von Varibon Reseria

A smile forms upon his lips, she is melting like butter in his hands. Demitrious licks his lips a little at her panicked response. He walks in front of her and kneels down on one knee and with both of his hands on each of Kisa's shoulder he looks her square in the eye.

"I do hope we get along. I do understand that we have just met but I am going to treat you.... like a true husband will.... You will have the utmost respect from me if you show the same respect. If you listen to my requests and oblige yourself to following them.... I will show you just how much of a lovely husband I can be for you. Eventually when we are.... uplifted from prince and princess position I will show the greatest gratitude to your father and your country."

Patting her shoulder and ruffling her hear by giving her a sort of weird head pat, he gazes into her eyes, his golden irises menacingly take in her figure. Relishing in the manipulation and making the atmosphere juuuuuust right, he gives her a smile.

"Well?"

Thorival Reseria

After having finished his routine of reporting to the captain of the knights and continuing his training, he walks into the empty halls of the Castle as everyone is congregating to the main dining hall and ballroom for the gathering of announcing the to be wedded couple. Each step echoing loudly in the halls reflect his heartbeat in how lonely he feels, more so now than ever. Having actually looked forward to the prospect of marriage.

If the bride was anyone but Kisa, Thorival would have declined in a heartbeat. However with Kisa being a potential mate, his stomach fluttered at the thought. Shaking his head he clears out his thoughts and feelings of loss. Keep with the path and continue moving forward. That's what a knight would do. No. A Paladin.

After being summoned by his father and told to retrieve Demitrious and Kisa, he makes his way towards his brother's room. Arriving there he sees the two having conversation. His heart droops at the sight of her but it quickly gets washed away by a sense of duty.

"Ahem, father wanted me to inform you two that you are requested at the reception in the dining hall. Most of the goveners, aristocrats and weathly individuals have gathered for the announcement of your marriage. It is requested you make a show."

His tone monotone, and his voice unwavering, his sight looks to Kisa. Seeing the unease in her eyes and the fear of her being in a foreign, strange place makes him feel bad for her. Perhaps sometime in the future Kisa and him can have a conversation and visit.

"Father insists that you two make haste."
