Kuno,

I do. Though she doesn't cook as much anymore, my mother's always been a homemaker. I've been told that when she was younger and her husband was still alive she would make meals for the entire village. I do most of the cooking now that I've gotten older, but she's still there to help when I need it. Sometimes she'll put the older kids to work peeling potatoes, but more often than not she tries to teach them. Nothing big, just the basics; their reading, writing, and math. We don't have any scholars in the village so she does what she can.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the topic of 'love'. Arguing with you over it is like talking to a stump, and I've grown tired of it. Maybe you can spin your fairy tales to some of those stuck up Zenans you were talking about before. I'm sure they'll love a good story. You've got enough charm to almost make it believable.

I'm glad that the sailscale is doing well! I was worried it wouldn't heal properly, but now I know it's in good hands. One of the hunter's made a point that I hadn't thought about, though. Do you think it can be released now that it's been around earthlings this long? It might be too reliant on people to fend for itself.

A weywa! I'm surprised that old knife didn't break on you during the haul, but I am glad that it kept you safe. With any luck you won't have to use it again anytime soon.

I'm fairly certain the tea you sent is a living thing because it was strong enough to stand up and walk! I've never even HEARD of something this strong in my life! It didn't bother mother near as much as it did me, but as I told her I'm fairly certain old age has robbed her of a sense of taste.

Sincerely,
Mero

P.S.
I'm not entirely sure how large Bubs is, but I'm sending up a blanket that I wove for him. If it's too large to go under his saddle then you can just put it in his pen.

'Mero,

Can't imagine trying to wrangle a bunch of kids like that. I'll just stick to the animals here. At least I can lock them in the stable when they're acting up. Pretty sure the parents would be upset to hear about their kids getting locked into a stable room for misbehaving. It's got to be tempting though.

Now I'm a stump! Like I said. Harsh lady. At least I'm one of the best looking stumps around. If the Zenans were interested in listening, I wouldn't have gone all the way out to Sauti to find you! It sounds like you need the "fairy tales," but I guess I can stick with the more interesting stories for now.

My aunt says it'll be fine to go back. It is old enough that it already spent time taking care of itself. Its time with us won't harm it. Might be a little cranky when no one brings it breakfast the first day, but it'll be up to finding its own meals again. We make sure that we're not hand-feeding it either. Once it was able to move without too much risk, we hid the food around so it still had to work to eat. Makes the transition back into the wild easier.

When the wind is freezing your eyes shut, a strong tea like that is what keeps you going. Don't get those conditions as often on the border here, but it's always good to have on hand. A bit like that knife; not the main thing I'd use, but good to have in case I need it. Sometimes a coffee will do the trick, too. Ever had coffee before? Not my favorite, but hearty enough and enjoyable.

It was really nice of you to make that blanket for Bubs. He was a bit thrown off by the unfamiliar smell at first. I swear he spent at least 5 minutes circling it and barking at it before he decided it was safe to touch. He might be nearly full size, but he's still a pup at heart! The blanket's just a little on the big side, but still great for under the saddle. I'm impressed you judged the size so well.

Sincerely,
Kuno'

Kuno,

Oh, really? The next time you're down this way we'll have to leave you alone with them so you can get a feel for it. You might not be able to lock them up, but if you're creative enough anything can be a punishment. You just have to learn what makes each kid tick and once you have it they just fall in line.

So that's the real reason you were so keen on talking to me. None of the Zenan ladies would take you into their court so you thought a poor country girl would just fall all over you? Pity you weren't lucky enough to find someone so
easy to fool; I happen to be sharper than most!

I've heard of coffee, but I've never tried it. It's imported from Oba, isn't it? We don't see too many imported goods here, but a few of the rangers have talked about it. I can't imagine anything stronger than that tea, though. I'm pretty sure if I poured it over a corpse I could raise the dead.

As for the blanket it was a lot of guess work. One of our hunters has a kinfa so I may have used it as a guide. I'm glad that he enjoyed it, even if he seemed a little confused at first. It would have been nice to see; he sounds adorable.

Sincerely,
Mero

'Mero,

Don't be sitting there thinking you'll pass your work onto me. You can keep those kids and their grubby little fingers to yourself and I'll just take your word for it. Unless they behave for food. I think I could work around that.

You sure do sting like a bee, aiming straight for the soft parts. I would never presume to 'fool' a lady such as you! A harmless prank, sure. Fool into courting and leave her pining away for me while I'm here in Zena? Ma would kill me.

In that case, here's some coffee for you, too. Having it from fresh ground beans is best, so I hope you've got a grinder you can use; or a pestle will work fine. You can add cream to it to lighten the taste once it's done. Since I sent that last letter, I've actually been drinking more of it. Guess thinking about it made it tempting.

His first meeting with you should go a little easier now that he has your scent. He'll be excited to meet the source.

Sincerely,
Kuno'

Kuno,

This is going to be my last letter for a while. A few of the huntsman are going on a trip and one's wife is going to be staying with us. They already have five children and one is due any day so don't think I've forgotten you if I slip off. Mother insisted she stay with us for support since she's from a village to the south and her family couldn't come to be with her. Funny thing, isn't it? That they think it's perfectly fine for her to make that kind of trip, alone, with five children, but can't be bothered to send one adult up here to help care for her.

She wants to name the baby after her father if it's a boy, but I've got her convinced to name it after me if it's a girl. That would be a way to show them, wouldn't it? Maybe they'll think twice about missing out on such an important event!

Take care of yourself, don't cause your mother too much grief, and pamper Bubs as much as you can. Any creature that can put up with you for that long deserves it.

Sincerely,
Mero
