It was...strange to be talking to this woman about these things, but Padma actually enjoyed it. She felt perhaps she was betraying Ujana's trust in opening up to her, since she knew her twin didn't enjoy the woman, but... this was her siblings' mother, and Padma wanted to give this an honest try. "He ah... had a small hollow at the base of a tree that we slept in. It was strangely charming, but I missed a proper home--" Much to her surprise though, Maritza was... offering her help? Padma flushed pink and held her hands up, shaking her head insistently, "Oh-- no! I couldn't accept- I... it's difficult but we are managing! He makes skins and leathers, and we gather so much extra ... b-but thank you!"
Hopefully the woman wasn't offended. Padma took a breath, then blinked and really looked at what Maritza was doing, her mouth dropping open. "Wh- what are you doing? Going down there?" She asked, taken aback and somewhat startled.

"Padma, that's how badgers sleep." She'd been 'understanding' and 'polite' up to that point, but this revelation was clearly enough to shock Maritza back to her old ways. A hollow in a tree? Seriously?! "Honestly I shouldn't be surprised given his upbringing, but-" Maritza shook her head with a low whistle. Had Uquin known about that part? Was it as much of a shock to him as it was to her?
"It doesn't have to be difficult. What my work lacks in time with family it more than tries to make up in funds. I have enough to send to your father and more; it's not a problem, really." Besides, even if it was she doubted Uquin would fight her on it. She was sure that while she was away Padma had helped out more than once with the children so, in a way, this was Maritza's way of saying 'thank you'. "I'm not offering to support your lifestyle, but a little to make it easier isn't so bad, is it?"
With a firm grip on the rope, Maritza swung her other leg over the side and suspended herself over the open well, relying entirely on the old wood to hold her. "How else am I supposed to see what I'm working with?"

Well... yes, she knew that. But- ! Padma's cheeks went pink, but really she had no argument for that, and somehow the way Maritza said it made her feel sheepish rather than defensive. "I... if you're able to spare it, I suppose I could give it back to papa if I don't use it." Padma conceded, moving to the edge of the well worriedly. If anything, Maritza was a bit smaller and thinner than even she was - so if the woman fell, maybe she could catch her? "Oh-- that's a good point... just... just be careful! I'll be right here the whole time--"
Silly, as if Maritza worried about that. She breathed out a sigh, then peered over the lip of the well, smiling as reassuringly as she could.

With a final, definitive tug on her rope Maritza was satisfied that it would hold her. The lightning woman started to lower herself down bit by bit, angling just enough so that the rope wouldn't dig into her thighs too badly. Looking up at Padma now, Maritza scoffed, her eyes bouncing a little with each new drop. "Don't waste your time standing around waiting one me; I might be down here for a while."
Thinking on it though, she pursed her lips, "Maybe check on the kids, though? They should still be sleeping but I don't trust Isaia." Normally she would be worried about Zadia as well because of her nightmares, but honestly, she tended to fall like the dead during nap time. The further down she got the more distant her voice became and at a certain point it began to echo.

Well... that was a good option, but Padma also didn't want to walk away from her father's partner dangling dangerously down a well. What if she fell and drowned?! But - as Maritza descended, Padma rationalized that it would be fine... she could always come back down, later, and make sure she'd gotten out alright? "I... alright! Thank you-" She called back, haltingly. Still, as frazzled as she felt, Padma felt... somewhat reassured as she climbed back up to her father's home to check on her siblings. It was a shame that Ujana didn't get along with her, but Padma felt a bit better now that she'd had a proper conversation with the woman.
