“If I HAD to get it for you, it wouldn’t be a GIFT now, would it.” She swatted at his arm with the box. “Now… open.” You can check this out while I find where the other bit got to, this is just the one that won’t go bad and should make you look kick a** to boot, plus it has a good luck charm carved into it too, I figure wishing it to you eight ways to Sunday can’t hurt.” She pulled her bag into her lap and started digging for what was apparently the other surprise. The second thing she pulled out was a ziplock of ‘Puré’ candy. Grape flavor, they were fruit pure covered in tangy sugar. “To get you through your tests too. There is a kit-kat, again for luck but… yes. Candy.” She put the bag at her feet again and sighed, content. "Now, I can relax."

He pursed his lips. "I don't need to look 'kick a**,'" he grumbled, though that was mostly because he supposed his mother wouldn't approve to any cosmetic changes that were not professional.
He managed a soft smile at the candy and shook his head. "All right, so you've given me luck, diabetes, and..."
He opened the box, trying to hide any sort of nervous excitement as he did so.

It was a hair ‘stick,’ lacquered black with just the end of it formed of a purple resin so deep it almost blended with the glossy black of its body. The length of the black body of it was carved with a snake, discretely hidden in the deep color, and it would be, for the most part, hidden in the twist of hair formed by it. The very tip had a delicate filigree of silver with the promised wish for good fortune carved into a smooth spot of the design. Delicate enough to be discrete but just enough to bestow some measure of good fortune on the recipient without broadcasting to the world that they might feel a need for it. “I think your mother will approve,” Q said with a half-stifled yawn. “… Tell her I said it might distract your opponents in court but will also pull your hair back in a very professional way.” She stifled another yawn and took a sip of her boba with a delighted hmmmmm sound. “So…suck it up, you got gifts…” a long pause. “god, this shouldn’t be so comfortable.”

Jace's eyes moved over the hair stick with immediate fondness and his fingers gently glided over the smooth surface. For a few seconds, he didn't seem to know how to respond and just took in the beauty of it.
Q was thoughtful. As thoughtful as Nelson, though they showed it differently.
"Thank you, it's beautiful," he finally admitted, and was reluctant to have to put it away so he could drive. He gave it one last look before returning it to the box and closing it, putting it in the glove compartment. "...You seem to understand the way my mother thinks more than anyone else, so I'll trust you. And if she doesn't, I will throw you under the bus," he threatened, as if such a thing were ever even possible for him.
He was still smiling, just faintly, from the gift--and from how comfortable she seemed to be. "If you fall asleep, that's fine. I can turn on the air, some soft music. I'll drive carefully. Once we get out of the airport. If you've got any fast food in mind, tell me now or I'll pick a place and you'll just have to eat it when you wake up."

“I, for one, welcome that bus; I look forward to revenge puncturing its tires for starters because I think one already hit me.” She teased, though his voice sounded more heavy with sleep with each word. “Mmmm, You pick.” She murmured. “I trust you.” She shifted just enough to tug free the blanket and draped it over her shoulder. A deep breath and slow exhale. “I'm glad you like it… I’ll help you with it if you need it.” She rubbed her eyes. “You’re a good man Jace… “ She sighed and dozed off, content to be home and safe as well.

Jace was grateful her eyes were closed, afraid she'd see how red he went. He could feel a bit of warmth on his cheeks, and his ears were absolutely burning. He knew enough about Q that he could have probably ordered her something she'd enjoy from just about any fast food menu, so he wasn't terribly stressed about it.
He exhaled, finding himself relaxed just to have her back in town. And she trusted him. And she thought he was good, which worked wonders for revitalizing his self-esteem. He could pretend for a lot of people, could pretend enough that even he believed it, but she made it feel real.
He didn't adjust the air, didn't tweak the music. He pulled out of the parking lot and drove, safer than he ever did, just to make sure she could get as much rest as she could.
