Though Ilya looked temporarily concerned when Sterling jumped, there was nothing but understanding in his eyes.
"Pick up where we left off?" he prompted, but the smile had lingered on his face since Sterling began to speak again, since he started throwing around ideas. He trusted that Sterling knew his boyfriend more than Ilya did, so if he thought that Yu would be all right with all of this, he would give it a chance. "I think it sounds nice. Though, you'll have a lot to fill me in on."
He didn't sound like he'd mind at all.
"...You can tell Yu," he said, almost as an afterthought. "And Priam. Anything I've told you today. To assure them that this isn't some scheme to steal from you. I don't like to share my personal business, but. I give you permission, and encourage it, if it would ensure they don't think you've lost your mind for giving me this chance. And to assure them that I'm not trying to steal you. I'm happy with this," he said, honestly. "And I'm happy that you have such good people in your life, caring for you, already. I don't have anyone to introduce you to. My brothers? Emile lives on the other side of town, now, with his fiancé. And Eli lives with my mother, for now, but he may move in with me when he's ready to start college. He might have a pet he's bringing. I'm not a huge fan of animals, but." He smiled.
"...I think it's just the messiness. And my job keeps me away for long, irregular hours, sometimes. But. I'd like to work on that. I'm honored that you would share them with me. Your animals. Ah. And, your people. Thank you, really."

Sterling nodded, looking eager, though just a little bewildered as to why he was being told that he could tell Priam...or why Priam would think that Ilya was trying to steal him...he wasn’t dating Priam…
And he didn’t have the mental fortitude to think about such a thing at this moment in time. “I would love to meet your brothers...and if your youngest, if Eli does move here and he has an animal, we’ll be happy to help you take care of it no matter what it is. And...I can always come help you clean if it gets too messy. Oreo is great, she’s a very clean cat, and I appreciate that a lot…”
He gave a very real smile and relaxed finally, sinking back into the couch and looking up at Ilya with an almost playful expression. “...How about that lemonade? And maybe we can have a slice of pie? Then...I can try to catch you up on things.”

Ilya blinked and then nodded. "Oh, yes, of course. I'm sorry, I got distracted." He rose, but now he wasn't battling some alarm with the concept of leaving. Now, it felt like hosting. Like indulging an old friend.
"An excellent idea," he agreed, finding that now that the butterflies in his stomach had settled he was eager to talk to Sterling. He wanted to hear about how his life had been, about everything he'd been up to.
There had been no reproach. There had been no criticism, no cruelty.
When he rose, his smile was subdued--as seemed to just be how Ilya carried himself--but it was genuine.
This was good. This could work.
