"You've been invited to the halloween ball, what made you pick the costume or outfit you are wearing? What will you do there? Is anyone you know going? Do you like putting the trick in trick or treat?
There was nothing better than a seeing the fruits of one's labor. In this case it was the decorations in the ballroom. Above were balloons and streamers, shiny black tinsel and garlands of bats and pumpkins, tiny golden and purple lights, and magically hovering balls of glowing gauze. On the tables it was artistically folded napkin towers and glass caddies that wove around the necks of the wine glasses and the little hula skirt-like decorations wound around the cups. Candy was laid out in fans of brilliant color, or decorated bowls filled with boxed and wrapped treats. Candy apples set out in rows that undulated like the caramel and chocolate oozing down the sides of each tart apple. It was all there and it looked perfect. As expected.
She had not been planning to attend the ball and made her decision at the last moment, so she had no costume to wear. However, her normal garb could be considered a "costume" by many. She was a witch and liked to dress as one, with a dark, sometimes-gothic sometimes-lolita sometimes-Celtic, gown or dress, tall black boots, and the unmistakable pointed hat. She wore a corset and a crescent-shaped moon pendant to complete the look.
She weaved through the crowd, appreciating all the many costumes, including one or two more witches. It was an uneasy atmosphere that met her when she found her way to the refreshments table. One lion-boy manipulated the water bowl to summon a fish while another witch watched. Her hand found the rim of the bowl and one clawed finger touched the surface of the water. A clear, tasteless liquid found its way from the claw into the water bowl. Then, again, into the punch bowl. Let the kids enjoy their time a little more, with a touch of the psychedelic. A little trick in the treat.
She picked up a candied apple and moved away from the table to enjoy her treat. No trick on her. She was a little sweet for it. She smiled gently as she made her way through the crowd and stopped by the dancing area. She stood off to the side to watch people dancing. She loved seeing how people enjoyed themselves. She had helped make their day. She was very proud of herself.
While she watched the dancers she fell into reverie.
She had been hoping to see Zeeg and Krie here tonight. Would Zeeg ask Krie to dance? Or would that seem too forward? She thought they'd make a cute couple if Zeeg would get over her hang-ups. She hoped they would come and help her celebrate her first Halloween here. She had no guardian to share it with, just herself, and so far they were her only friends, even though she had been at Sanctuary for a while. Will they come or won't they? she asked herself. Come play with me.
It was the end of a song and she observed the core of her apple. The candy and apple were gone. It was time to find a trashcan, and then look for her friends again. With that she trashed the core and disappeared into the crowd.
