Sessrumnir watched as the young man closed his eyes and focused. It was safer to have someone around to keep an eye out for potential dangers, anyway. No one ever knew when the Negaverse or a youma would try to attack and take advantage of the situation.

And when Belmont opened his eyes again, he seemed to have a bit more understanding of the world he was thrown into, if at least only his name.

“It’s nice to meet you, Belmont of Jupiter,” Sessrumnir said, not exactly smiling but he was more resigned to the idea of talking to this knight instead of leaving like he’d planned. At least this one was asking questions, and not just giving into ignorance.

He then lifted his hand to indicate to one of the shining red gems nestled in the gray fur of his cape over his shoulders. Inside it was a symbol of Jupiter. Hopefully Belmont was paying attention, because he was about to get a crash course in knighthood.

“Knights have the place they’re named for, and sworn to protect, on celestial bodies in our Universe. We call the place our wonder,” he said, knowing he was getting into weird, alien territory, but he tried keeping it as simple as possible. “At least that was the case in the past over a thousand years ago, before everything went to hell and we were all apparently reborn or had our bloodline passed through people on Earth,” he quickly added, since it wasn’t as though there was much left at their Wonders.

“Belmont, the place you are named for, exists on the planet Jupiter. As does Sessrumnir. This is Jupiter’s symbol. All of the planets of our solar system have knights, including Pluto, but there are some others. Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest moon, has its own knights. Polaris and Castor, the stars. Chronos, whose knights defend what’s called the Surrounding and consists of the Western Zodiac. Cosmos, who protects the Space Cauldron where starseeds go until they’re ready to be reborn. There could be more. Need a break?”

Having been around for as long as Sessrumnir had, he'd at least collected as much information as he could. Not that many cared to ask and much less listen.

It seemed completely wild, like a page out of some fairy tale that had been poorly translated. And yet, he couldn't find it in him to deny anything Sessrumnir said. Logically, it didn't make sense. But there was something more, something beyond that, that he found irrefutable.

He reached up a hand to rub at the back of his neck while he processed and found himself exhaling as he digested it.

"No, I...I've got that much now. --If I'm going to pause you for anything it's to say that I appreciate you taking the time to tell me all of this. So you and I both have a stake on Jupiter, somewhere we're supposed to protect? And this wasn't just randomly chosen, it was some duty passed down to us. --And I'm guessing there's no way to hand it off to someone else if we're incompetent or just not a good fit?"

He'd been told to go home. To power down and leave this.

That didn't sound like something you'd say if there was hope to pass it on to someone more responsible, someone more prepared.

“I figured if you’re going to harass me for information, I might as well give you something,” Sessrumnir grunted, lifting his arms to cross over his chest now as they stood in the near darkness, save for the streetlight.

“As far as I’m aware, and incompentent or not, you can’t just hand it off unless you die,” he shrugged. “But there’s also nothing stopping you from going home and pretending this never happened. You don’t have to be Belmont,” Sessrumnir said, this time frowning, because along with all the information he was giving, he also wanted to drill in the fact that this was extremely dangerous.

“There isn’t a manual on how to survive being in this pointless war going between the Negaverse and the rest of us. They seem to think they’re the only ones allowed to claim the Earth as their home, and they need energy and starseeds to feed their cause. Or maybe they just want us eradicated. There’s no guarantee that you won’t be killed or corrupted and forced to become one of them.”

Sessrumnir was still hoping to convince Belmont that the best choice was to give up. Maybe then he would be able to grow up and live a normal life.

“They already destroyed most of what was out there in space. Your wonder was probably thriving at one point in time, but now it is likely in ruins, so there is no point fulfilling any oaths made by past lives or your ancestors. Earth is what we’re trying to protect now, and the lives of everyone who live here in peace.”

Belmont considered this, for a long moment; he was brash and impulsive, but he wasn't stupid. Or at least, he didn't think he was. "...I'll think on it," he said, because he wasn't going to jump into something this big--wasn't going to sign his life over--unless he'd taken a bit of time to consider all of it.

"...Obviously, I don't want to die. I don't want someone to take my starseed and erase my existence."

But it had almost happened already, and he hadn't even been trying to fight them.

"...I don't know. I'll think about it. There's not an expiration date, is there? --And if I do decide I want to be proactive about protecting Earth, the people on it...is there like, some coalition to join? Or do I just have to hope I get lucky and run into you again?"

Belmont’s promise to think on it was better than nothing. At least he was weighing the possibilities instead of just jumping into something potentially life threatening. Especially when Sessrumnir had just experienced some strange village haunted by a monster.

Sessrumnir’s first instinct was to tell Belmont that he likely wouldn’t run into him again, but knew he couldn’t just let this young knight wander around being youma bait while trying to find someone else to talk to.

“Look for one of these. You should have one somewhere. Might be on your wonder, or even in your house if it’s been passed through your family,” Sessrumnir said, holding up his hand where a seemingly blank signet ring rested comfortably on his finger. “If you want to contact me, just send me a message. Look up Freyja’s Hall from Norse mythology to see how to spell my name.”

He lowered his hand and took a step backwards to start his departure, “Wait until you’re somewhere safe. You should be able to sense if you’re around someone dangerous. But close your eyes again and concentrate on who you are as a civilian, and you should be able to change back from Belmont. If you want to get to your wonder to explore it, same thing. Focus on becoming Belmont again, and then on your wonder. What to do should come naturally.”

Belmont leaned forward just a bit to get a good look at the signet ring, and while it seemed like such a far-fetched concept, he nodded. He hadn't known of any family heirlooms, but he said, "I'll start by asking about any rings passed down, then. And if we don't have one, I'll..."

He drew in a breath and nodded. "I'll figure it out and get back to you. But--thanks, a lot," he said, and while he didn't seem to fully comprehend everything he'd been told, it was a jumping off point.

"...I'll be good and, ah. Power down. And head home, so."

He raised a hand as if to wave goodbye, still a bit confused, but he fully intended to keep his word. He glanced to where the youma had once been and then just shook his head.

"I appreciate it. I'll do my best," he said, like he had to assure it, and then he turned, chose a direction, and started off on his own way.

He'd promised he'd think about it, but a part of him couldn't figure out how he could not want to try and take a trip to outer space. At least once.

But he'd ask about the ring first, and find out if this was some well-hidden, dirty little family secret.
