“Sounds like a lot of land.” Mused Yunan thoughtfully. He supposed that would make sense as he was in basically the countryside of the continent. While Oban houses fought over land in the city it was free game in a place where there were acres upon acres of rolling hills and forests. It was obvious why the agriculture sector was mostly stationed here and worth the three days it had taken to travel here from the city. “Maybe you could give me a tour of that while we wait on your father to return as well.”

Nasrin nodded as she almost skipped along the path. When they passed the last few houses at the end of the village and found themselves crossing a small stone bridge that curved over a stream, she finally paused and gestured towards the right. “We’re past the flower fields here.” Rows upon rows of delicate flowers in full bloom, their colorful petals painting the fields in a rainbow of colors, greeted them as they walked. “Some study insects and so while the flowers bring in tourists it also serves as a research area for us too.”

“So I see. It’s rather lovely.” Yunan found himself admitting as they walked through the fields. It was fragrant here and he could already imagine some of the perfumes that could be sold based on this set of flowers alone. “Are there some that work well in teas? We have delicate flowers that bloom in Oba that make excellent white teas.” He mused as he reached out to study one of the many flowers that curled upwards on vines around a lattice.

“There are.” Replied Nasrin lightly. “These are mostly good for making fragrances but that one in particular has a sweet nectar that adds flavor to some cakes and teas.” The young hybrid plucked one flower off and pulled the steam away to reveal the amber liquid. “You can try one like this and see for yourself.” She demonstrated by allowing the nectar to drop on her tongue and after savoring it for a moment swallowed. “It’s very sweet.”

Yunan was wary but once the girl actually proved that the flower was edible he found himself plucking one and trying the same. “Hmm.” He gave a slight nod of his head as he swallowed, “It is very sweet indeed. I suppose that’s why you don’t need a lot for flavoring something?” It was light but the sweetness was far from being subtle. He could imagine it in a sponge cake, similar to the ones his aunt had made in the past with honey.

“Exactly. You can actually use the pollen as a powder and the nectar as a bit of a syrup.” Replied Nasrin happily. “My mother makes a wonderful cake with it and I enjoy a cup of dark tea with it. The sweetness is really good for fighting off anything too bitter. It works well with medicines and I would often ask for it or honey whenever I was ill.”

“Interesting.” Yunan twisted the flower in his hands, the delicate white petals loosened without the stem and slowly falling apart in his grasp. “Hopefully you aren’t sick that often.” He responded before crouching to study another flower. It was prickly with thorns and Yunan was surprised to see such a thing growing beneath the more delicate flowers that were definitely more appealing to the eyes than the scraggly vine.

“Not as much anymore. I think mostly it was my body adjusting to the Belrean climate after spending six years in Tendaji.” She replied honestly. “It’s why I want to study healing or herbalism like my Papa. It’s very exhausting being sickly after all. I would think it a great benefit if I could become a healer and help others who may be struggling like I did as a child.” Nasrin crouched and glanced at the vine that Yunan was studying, “These are just good for helping to keep weeds from crowding out our flowers. If you grind the roots they make a pale green powder for vitamins.” She made a face though as she spoke about it. “It’s super bitter.”

“An admirable goal.” Replied Yunan as he poked a finger lightly against one of the thorns. It was definitely a pricklier plant and almost reminded him of the ones that grew in the desert - that is if someone stretched them out into a fine cord instead of letting them grow like round pillars in the sands. “I would be surprised if it wasn’t bitter.” He teased lightly as he glanced towards the hybrid girl. “It seems you are quite knowledgeable already when it comes to these plants.”

Nasrin beamed at the compliment. “Thank you! I really hope I can be as smart as my Papa one day.” The hybrid girl glanced about before standing back up. “There’s a variety here and I could show you a few more if you would like before we head to my home. My Papa should be back within a couple of hours so we have time.”

“I would not be opposed to learning some more if you would like.” Usually Yunan was far more reserved with strangers and not fond of children at all but the girl seemed to be too friendly for even him to hate. It would not be such a hassle to spend a couple of hours with her while he waited on her father to return home. At least she’s knowledgeable and helping already. He glanced towards her thoughtfully. “I also hear that we are close to the ocean here. Is that true?”

“Let me show you these.” Nasrin pointed to some violet flowers with crimson tips. “If you take these roots then you can actually cause skin irritation. It’s good for chasing out infections because it forces the skin to heal when combined with some other medicines. There’s a gel that we make from some evergreen plants that keep their leaves all year despite the cold.” She continued on and pointed out several other plants to Yunan before pausing at his next question. “The ocean? Yes!” She grinned. “We’re about half a day away from the ocean here and so my family goes at least once a week in the summer months. The seaweed that washes on shore is actually good for medicines as well.I think it’s similar to what you have in Matori but our seaweed is slightly different in color and has a few different varieties depending on where you look.”

Yunan nodded and made certain to listen closely as the girl explained various plants to him. “So the traders that come here also order herbs along with produce? I saw the fields full of crops but I did not realize how far the herb gardens expand in your village.” It was honestly impressive. Yunan could not deny that the Belreans had extensive ways to farm and loved their knowledge. It was a very different experience from the more tribal lifestyles he had witnessed back home and the smaller villages that kept mostly to themselves with a local healer. Oba had deserts so his shops were welcomed as they had connections across the continent and built greenhouses to grow what could not be easily harvested within the desert country. Hearing about the ocean also made him thoughtful as he pondered her insight. “It is similar to Matori as we do use seaweed for medicines as well.”

Nasrin pursed her lips thoughtfully, “Mostly traders do come for produce so that they can take it to the bigger cities but some herbalists do come by as well for our herbs. We mostly mix medicines here and send them out to healers as necessary. It sounds like you probably should reach out to Layli. She’s the one who oversees trade in town and often helps the farmers and merchants settle on prices. I’m certain she would be interested in setting up trade with your new shops.” For someone who was often considered too childish and playful for serious matters, Nasrin actually learned a lot while she helped the locals by babysitting and delivering flowers. She was definitely glad that she could share it with Yunan since he seemed so nice and wanted to help others by selling medicines. Or at least that was how she translated his desires to turn profit by use of medical means.
“If you plan on staying for a couple of days I would recommend going to the ocean. It’s truly a lovely sight.”

“Understood. When I’m finished meeting with your father then I would be happy to meet this Layli.” Yunan wanted to make the connection so that he could plan for shipments to his store soon. The time was coming to set things up and he hoped that he could be successful enough to return home to Matori within the next couple of years. If the shop was running smoothly enough to operate without him then he could return home and just set up someone who could send his family their portion of the profits as the founders. Just the thought of the ocean made him homesick and he couldn’t help being tempted by Nasrin’s offer. “I may find myself staying here a couple of nights since I will need time to set up things for my store in the capitol. It would be nice to see the ocean.”
