“I think you might be right, the lights are brighter over there too.” The sun was beginning to set, and the glow from that part of the city certainly lit up the sky. Surprisingly, Koray took the first step forward, feeling confident with this man by his side, and tugged him along, peeking around corners before stepping further out. “Sauti is nice. I’ve only been there a few times, but I liked the quiet. I like it more than the city, for sure.” Another peek around the corner, and he kept going. “I’m... From all over. I don’t actually know where I was born, my mama said she was traveling, and we still keep traveling. Do you travel a lot, Mr. Oduin?”

Oduin nodded. "Mostly within Sauti, a little bit into Tale and Zena. But now that I'm... you know, a professional," he said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. "I thought it'd be a good excuse to expand the circle." They took a few turns and poked their heads into a couple of streets that didn't seem likely before the smells and sounds of a festival hit them. It was hard to place what exactly the foods were, but the smell of a dozen different spices floated in the air, and there was a lightness to the chatter that spoke of people having a good time. It was just a couple streets over. Oduin pointed. "We found it!" he declared, picking up the pace. "I don't know about you, but I'm peckish." (He was always peckish.) "And I could do with some games."

“A professional what?” It seemed only vague, but that was nothing new. People seemed to really like being vague with him, so he didn’t press too much about it. The smells of the food already made his stomach grumble pretty loudly! That wasn’t a surprise either; crying took a lot out of him, so did bandaging himself up. Koray couldn’t wait, and neither could Oduin it seemed as he was tugged a little faster along. That was fine! “Mm... Skewers maybe? Something sweet? I-I can pay! To thank you, for helpin’ me!”

"Oh, professional swordsman, I guess," Oduin said with a wide-eyed shrug, pushing some of that wild hair out of his face again. "But technically... 'swordsman' isn't a profession. It just means you know how to use one. You still have to go out and find a job." It wasn't as simple as the lumber-hauling he'd grown up doing, but his parents had insisted that picking some sort of battle-oriented profession would open up doors. They weren't wrong, necessarily. Jobs in city guards and militias and protection services did pay significantly better. They rounded a corner to find an entire row of food stalls, and Oduin raised his free hand up to gesture widely at the scene before them. "Look at that! And you thought you weren't going to come! Crazy." He shook his head. "Well, okay, you can pay for the first skewers, but as the more gainfully employed one, I believe I have an obligation to treat you to some fine festival food. You get to pick."

“A sword for hire? So... Like a body guard? Or someone who escorts merchants around? ... I suppose that’s a cart guard, hehe...” The tiniest of laughs escaped him, imagining Oduin being super nice like he was being to himself, but to a cart. It was too silly to say out loud though! There was so much food!. Booth after booth after BOOTH of snacks and sweets and nearly full meals! As much as he wanted one of everything, he knew his stomach was too small for that, so he would have to choose carefully. But Oduin seemed like he could eat a whole lot! Maybe he could buy Oduin one of everything, and then take a bite of each thing. “Are you technically my bodyguard for tonight then? If you’re escorting me around an protecting me? If so, I gotta pay you too. So I can pay!” That bag on his hip was opened again, and out came a small, cute little frog-shaped coin purse. Koray gave it a shake and the loud sound of coins rang out from it. “I don’t spend a lot of money, so I have plenty saved! I can pay for it all!”

"Yea, basically," he said. "For the most part, it's pretty easy, you just have to look like you could scare them away. Like-" he paused and replaced his usual grin with a blank expression, topped with a mild frown. "That's my Resting Bodyguard Face." He chuckled. Good thing these positions didn't involve much talking, or people would see through him in a second. "Wellllll, I'd say more of a volunteer friend?" Oduin suggested, even as Koray pulled the little frog-shaped purse out of his bag. "So really, no pay necessary. Especially now that I know you and I both like frogs." What a cute kid. Koray reminded Oduin a bit of his younger brother - if... Toskr had been cute, anyway. He didn't remember Toskr ever being this pure and gentle, even as a toddler. So... maybe they weren't similar at all. "Okay, how about you buy the skewers and I'll..." he scanned around. "I'll pay for that game over there." He pointed at a booth with little targets lined up, some fake bows and arrows, and stuffed animals ranging from small to massive hanging up as prizes.

If that was what Oduin’s scary body guard face was, he probably wasn’t a very good body guard. It was a very handsome face, in a way, and Koray just shook his head, smiling knowingly to himself. “Hmm... Still doesn’t seem fair, but okay, I’ll think of something! For now, snack time!” Or dinner time. It could be dinner definitely if he ate as much as his belly wanted him to buy! Koray bought one for himself, and two for Oduin, offering him one. “You wanna play a game? Do you like games? Did you wanna win a prize?” From here, he really couldn’t tell what kinda prizes were hanging up, or what exactly the game was, no matter how much he squinted, buuuuut, if His new friend/body guard wanted to play, he woudn’t stop him! “I can try to win you one if there’s something you really like! Maybe. I can try, but I’m sorry if I miss.”

"Mmm! Thanks, Koray!" he said with characteristic enthusiasm, ripping a chunk off the skewer. He was peering around at some of the other stalls, making mental notes of which ones might be worth checking out. The good news was that Koray seemed to have mostly forgotten about his rough day, and Oduin was quite sure that spending some time here would make everything better again. "Sure, let's go play some games," he said, enjoying the ambiance. The celebration was supposed to be about the harvest and food and being grateful - all of which was, indeed, part of this festival - but that didn't mean they couldn't also have some entertainment to go with it. They arrived at the target-shooting booth, and Oduin nodded encouragingly, thoroughly won over by Koray's optimism. "Go for it, big man, show us how it's done," he said, clapping the boy on the shoulder as he handed over some change to the Oban running the stall.

The way Oduin said his name was very pleasant, like getting praised for doing a good job. It was so simple and such a pure feeling, he couldn’t get enough! Luckily, nibbling on his own skewer was a good enough distraction, and once it was gone, he wiped his hands clean on a given napkin. “Okay! So game time!” Once the man was paid, he got the arrows and took position to shoot! His posture was actually pretty good, and his form, showed that he had atleast some practice with them. At a quick glance, it looked like he could do it! And then he missed. And missed again. And again, and again, and again. Koray knew it would happened, but had really really wished he could be lucky, just once! The targets were so fuzzy, and they almost looked like they moved around even if he stood still, so every shot was far off the mark. What happy mood he had, seemed to quickly fizzle out and he put down the bow and arrow set. “... I’m sorry. I missed... Should... Should I try again? I can pay for it this time! I really wanted to win you something, since you’re being so nice to me...”

Oh, no. That wasn't the intended outcome of the game at all. It was quite odd... Koray's formed seemed to suggest that he should have at least hit one of them. Oduin watched, mildly perplexed, as the boy missed all five of his shots. Well that seemed...odd. But he didn't have much time to dwell on it, as Koray set the bow down, looking dejected. "Don't worry about it, Koray! It's just about having fun, you know?" he said, stuffing another coin in the stall guy's hand and picking up the bow and arrow. It was made of wood, and the tips of the arrows weren't pointed. Instead, they were covered in chalk so they left a mark on the targets wherever they hit. Oduin lifted the crudely made toy and fired his first arrow. These things weren't exactly sighted properly and didn't fly straight, so that first shot veered off to the right. "See, these things aren't that easy to shoot, either," he said reassuringly. Taking a little more care, he aimed his next one a bit more to the right. It thumped into the target, low. His next three shots hit, the last one smacking into the target just to the right of the center. "Hey, do we get anything for that?" he asked the man excitedly. The guy gestured to the medium-sized toys. "Oh, give me that one." Oduin waved to a bird-shaped creature near the edge. The man fetched it off the rack and tossed it at him. Oduin snatched it out of the air with one hand, and then presented it to Koray. "I know you wanted to win me something, but I actually don't have a lot of luggage space for toys. This one is Suhurama, though. It's a sacred bird in Sauti, very fiery and shiny. I think it suits you," he said.

Huh. Watching Oduin show that it wasn’t quite as easy to hit as he thought it would be did make him feel better. It really wasn’t like Papa’s little bow. And seeing him hit those targets after adjusting a little, was inspiring. A new, strange feeling settled in his belly. Butterflies. It felt like a billion little butterflies were all fluttering around like crazy. Oduin’s next words kinda went in one ear, and out the other as he stared wide eyed at him, only to be broken out of it when the man presented him with the toy. “Y-you think.. I’m fiery and shiny...?” It was a compliment, and now he stood there, squeezing the cute, soft bird to his chest, confused, and thrilled. “But I couldn’t win something for you....” In a small panicked moment, he looked around, before he got a little idea. “How about... I get you something cold! A shaved ice? Or something? A-and you can sit here, and enjoy it maybe tell me a story about your super cool adventures, and I can make something nice for you! I got something in my bag I was working on, I could work on that for you!”

Oduin smiled as Koray clutched the stuffed bird to his chest, glad that he seemed to like it. Of course, the thing was a festival prize, so it wasn't necessarily the most lifelike of Suhurama. But there was at least some nice stitching in shiny gold thread to help it catch the light and gleam. "Of course!" he said. "Being fiery and shiny isn't just about winning things. It's a state of being. Winning is just a perk. These festival games are kind of rigged anyway. The majority of it is just luck." He steered Koray discreetly away from the stall, in the hopes that the boy would forget about his own missed shots. "You know what, some ice sounds perfect, that would be lovely!" As long as it was food, Oduin would most likely eat it. "That sounds like a great trade."

“Rigged? Really? Huh... I think my big brother said something about that before too. I didn’t know it was the truth.” That relieved him even more, and luckily, the happiness from having a new friend in his arms was a perfect distraction from everything else. Even the aches and pains and throbs along his body was slowly being forgotten. “Good! Okay, so...” Koray took Oduin by the hand and sat him down on a wall that seemed just perfect for resting on. “You stay right here. To make sure you don’t move...” The sweet little Suhurama was placed on his lap. “There, I’ll be right back!” It seemed like the shaved ice place he saw before wasn’t too far away, close enough that he could scurry over there, then scurry right back and offer the big thing of icy goodness in only a matter of moments. “Now, you eat this! It’s melon flavored! And i will....” Koray made sure his hands were clean one more time, before hopping up on the wall beside Oduin, then pulling a few things out of his bag. A square shaped piece of cloth with a pretty greens and golds pattern embroidered on it, a needle, and a small bundle of different colored threads were all laid out beside him. “Work on this! It won’t take very long, so... You can eat, and maybe tell me about your adventure, while I finish this up!” A pretty image was already forming in his head. Pretty, and silly, but the very idea made him smile, and as if he had years and years of practice, he began to stitch.

Oduin was perfectly happy to follow and Koray led him over to a wall and sat him down. And then, like a cherry on top, the boy put the little stuffed bird in his lap. What a sweet child! By the time Koray came back, Oduin had moved the bird and sat it atop his head so it looked like it was riding on his shoulders. He took the melon-flavored dessert from Koray and took a first bite as the boy popped up onto the wall and began pulling things out of his bag. "Thanks, Koray," he said between bites of the ice. "This is great." He leaned over to peer at the cloth that had appeared. It certainly wasn't typical festival-going stuff, but it had a very nice-looking pattern sewn into that looked rather intricate. Embroidery was an activity for hands more agile than his. "What is it?"

“Hehe, You’re silly. It looks really cute on you though. He almost looks happy to have a really good perch like you!” Koray loved it when adults did things like that! It made them feel so much more... Hmm... Comfortable to be around? And Oduin was already super sweet to him, so it only made him more likable! “Is it really good? I’m glad! It looked tasty, so I thought so! I’ll have some once I’m done. I don’t wanna get this dirty just yet.” In and out, in and out, the needle passed through smoothly through the sturdy fabric, and it its wake was left swirls of color, and letters slowly began to form. When asked what it was, and seeing those eyes trying to take a peek, Koray turned, crouching over the fabric before he could get a good look. “It’s a secret gift, silly! You’re supposed to be tellin’ me a story while I finish this up! Okay?”
