Yes! Exactly! Nimueh nodded his head quickly, his expression crumpling a bit with sympathy for her. But... it was as Callum said. They had all agreed to this. And she had expressed, at the start, that she was fiercely against raising children - so he hoped she held on to that certainty as time passed.
However, when Callum asked about 'children' -- Nimueh flashed a coy smile at him. "Ah... well. Don't laugh." He murmured, wriggling a bit in place - a look that had always been ridiculous, for a man his size. Especially with Callum settled against his front.
"It was such a shock the first time... the have twins. And... I know nothing about my birth parents' history, other than the fact I was a single bloom. ... So I asked my parents, in a letter- and... they told me this... mm. Divination trick."
He huffed out a laugh, then shifted a bit, tapping his wedding band with his opposite hand. " You... remove your wedding ring, and slide a string through it, and use it as a pendulum over the belly. The way it swings is said to tell you what it will be... but I couldn't find a pattern. The healer suggested it was too early, but... I lost my grip on it, and the ring fell and-- ... my mothers had said the ring dropping is a sign it may be more than one child. So... perhaps?"

Don't laugh.
There was something about being told not to do it that made Callum instantly devilishly curious. It was cute, seeing Nimueh wriggling about that like, even if Callum had to move with him. He had just thought maybe the alk hybrid assumed it was natural for earthlings to birth in pairs but now...now he wanted to know.
And find out he did! The longer the story went on the more Callum tried to keep his composure. His entire body jerked forward when Nim started talking about pendulums, lips curling in on themselves with a hand fluttering up to cover his face. It wasn't funny, no, not at all, it was just entirely adorable and not at all the most amusing, absolutely sweet thing he'd heard in all his years.
After a while he couldn't even make eye contact with Nimueh because he knew if he did he would lose it entirely.
"What did...what did Odeya...have to say..." His question hitched a little, betraying his struggle not to laugh. "....when you told her you were going to...use her womb to talk to spirits..."

Thank goodness Nimueh couldn't see Callum's face (mostly because he was pointedly tilting his head away, to hide his own humiliated blush), because he would have whined at him if he had. As it was he was already pouting, all composure absolutely lost due to his excitement. Finally, he let out a distraught groan at the high-pitched, barely retrained tone of his husband's voice.
"I said don't laugh--" He hissed, in a tone that... nope. That was definitely a whine. "The healer said it was a legitimate technique! But ... mm. She... said I would look rather foolish if it ends up she is not pregnant yet. ... Especially when I... might have exclaimed that it was twins when I dropped the ring on her."
The last was admitted as a guilty, embarrassed mumble.

The hiss broke Callum.
For the first time all day he let out a loud, unrestrained guffaw that quickly turned into a miniature fit. Every time he looked at his husband's pouty face Callum tried to hold it back, going as far as to hold up a hand in surrender only for it to consume him again. "Just give me...just one..." He held up his index finger, let it go limp and eventually just gave in to the laugh.
"I can't....I just, goddess my stomach hurts...." Why was he still talking? Every little thing was just making it worse! "So you're telling me...that you've got this 'pendulum' swinging over this poor woman and just because you dropped it it's automatically twins." For most of the morning Callum had been grateful he wasn't at Odeya's house, but now he would have paid to be there. "How about this? If it works and we do have twins I'll change them for the first six months."

Nimueh leaned away from Callum just a bit, hiding his face behind his wrist, purple to the tips of his ears with embarrassment. But... it was infectious. Because really, how could he hate his husband laughing so happily? His lips twisted up into a reluctant smile, and finally he peeked past his fingers, chuckling mournfully as he recounted the event back to him. "For laughing at me, I'll take you up on that." He promised gleefully, reaching to gently pet his fingers through his hair.
