"Okay, okay, we won't do that!" Xenia held up her hands defensively, shrinking a little at his outburst. It was just so sudden that she didn't know how to react. Would seeing where his family lived really be that bad? Maybe they had superstitions of their own, or some kind of rule against outsiders?
"Yeah, they are." She recovered a little and tried to smile. It was a little awkward this time around, but genuine all the same. "My parents are really nice, so you'd like them a lot. Actually, you remind me a lot of my Mama, so I'm sure it would be fine if you visited." With as jumpy and paranoid as he was it was hard for Xenia not to compare him with Taijana. Granted, she was a lot better these days then when Xenia was a girl, but still...
"My sister might scare you, though. She's a lot more open than I am."

He gave a relieved nod when the girl backed away from her idea. Were all townsfolk really so friendly to invite strangers around their homes? Nok could not quite comprehend the idea, but he also couldn't deny that he was a little intrigued... His parents would not approve at all, and that actually made it all the more intriguing.
Being compared to the mama smart about hair made him give a tiny smile. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad? The sister comment caught his ear. He wasn't afraid of sisters since he had two of his own, but... "What does 'more open' mean?"

Xenia's eyes widened a bit, pushing her large glasses down her pert little nose. "Oh, well, I guess it means social? Talkative? Bold? A lot of people think she's more adventurous than I am because she acts like it all the time, but really, we're more similar than people think." Xenia knocked the toes of her boots together as she thought of ways to describe Kitya. "She's a lot prettier than me, so I guess that must be where all of her confidence comes from. Her hair isn't like mine; it's a lot smoother and she can do pretty things with it. And she likes to wear tighter clothes than me so I don't know how you would feel about that."
From the way he acted she got the distinct impression that Nok was more of a modest fellow than into anything scandalous. Women where he was from probably never showed an ounce of skin and any strip of ankle flesh was something to run from!

Nok patiently listened to the explanation, intrigued by the subtle change in the girl's tone. "She does sound scary," he mused with a smirk, surprising himself with the tease. It wasn't a complete lie, if this sister was indeed even more bold than the one in front of him, but he was curious to learn more about this strange family as well.
The storekeeper came out and set the bag on the top step. "Ah, good to see you socializing for once, Nok. I was hoping you'd be the one to break your family's isolation."
Nok blushed and tugged his hood forward bashfully. "I'm not breakin' things," he huffed, pulling the bag into his arms and jumping to his feet. He had taken a couple steps before spinning back to face the girl once more, peering through his bangs at her. "I'm Nok. What's your name?" If he was going to find her again, he might need a little more to ask for than 'the girl with the poofy hair.' He wasn't sure where this would go, or if he would actually ever see her again. Still, he was giving it some actual consideration.

Xenia looked up and over the brim of her glasses at the shopkeeper. She'd almost forgot the reason they were waiting outside to begin with, but now that the woman had appeared she was aware of how weird they must have looked. Two teenagers, hanging out on a stoop in the middle of the city. Still, she only found it in her to care a little bit. Getting to talk to someone outside of her family had been pretty nice.
She stood up with a little flourish, just to make sure she didn't trip over her layered skirts. The little yaeli brushed her the dirt off them with a passing hand before turning her attention back to him. "My name's Xenia. If you're ever back in town but you can't find me you can always leave a message with my Aunt. She runs the leather shop at the edge of town. They're sweet there so you'll be in good hands."
Now that he was all set up she might as well get a move on herself. "Be careful going home, Nok." With one last smile his way she turned to head off.
