“Me a warrior?” Pounamu shook her head, “I don’t think I could do that!” Her protest came out as a squeak. Just the thought of holding a weapon made her nervous! How would she even be able to use one to fight someone else? That just seemed like a very, very bad idea. “I would much rather patch you up, Naia. That way you have some support.” She nodded firmly, “Or even researching treasures, I like looking at maps.” Her Aunty had shown her some etchings and Pounamu always liked looking over them and hearing stories. Riddles were always fun to try to solve. Even though she was young, her Aunty said she had a knack for figuring out puzzles. Playing with Naia had really sharpened her problem solving abilities too! Naia does love making puzzles and hiding things after all.

As much as she loved puzzles, Naia wouldn’t understand how Pounamu could spend hours trying to solve them. Naia’s type of fun puzzle was one that you interacted with. Swimming through traps, risking your life to uncover some secrets while twisting and turning through a labyrinth of puzzles was definitely more her style. She could already imagine all of the amazing caverns that she would find one day...surely that would be fun. Still if Pounamu preferred her quiet studies then Naia wouldn’t bully her for it. The girl’s fuschia eyes gleamed, “I guess we’ll just see then. I would never make you pick up a weapon if it made you uncomfortable. I’ll just have to be super strong for the both of us.”
Yawning, she wiggled against the stone rock. It was such a nice, lazy afternoon. How much time had already passed while they were speaking? Should they head back soon? I’m so toasty though. It really was just so nice today. Naia felt her eyes fluttering as sleepiness started to slowly sink in.

“Thank you.” Pounamu smiled at the other girl’s understanding. Maybe things would change when they got older but for now the young hybrid dared not to think about harming another soul. She would much rather help heal and teach others than pick fights with some sea creature. As Naia started yawning, Pounamu couldn’t help yawning herself. It really was nice out and they still had a few hours of sunlight, right? Maybe a light nap wouldn’t hurt. As the seabreeze gently curled around them Pounamu found herself scooting closer to her friend.

It was about a half hour or so later when Naia found herself waking up. Yawning, the little hapuna glanced at the hybrid who had cuddled up against her. I guess we both drifted off a bit. As she took a moment to enjoy the view the girl gently shook her friend to wake her up “Hey, hey. We should get back into the water soon.” She whispered as she played with Pounamu’s hair, “It’s also going to be dark and we don’t want my brother to have to track us down.” He knew where they were since they couldn’t come to her favorite spot without telling him. That much Naia respected. Her brother had given her freedom to explore within limits and she wouldn’t break from that….yet.
That decided she began to climb down the rocks so that she could help Pounamu into the ocean.

“Huh?” Pounamu slowly opened her eyes. Had they both dozed off? Whoops! Flushing lightly she scooted away from Naia and glanced about, “You’re right. This was nice though.” She smiled at her friend sleepily, “Definitely relaxing!” She had never felt so warm before - no wonder everyone loved sunbathing! She felt so refreshed after this trip. Taking Naia’s hands, Pounamu began to climb down the rocks and entered the water with a splash.
It was time to swim home and tell her Aunty all about the fun she had hanging out with Naia today! Pounamu was really glad that Naia’s brother had let them wander off a bit. It definitely had been worth it!

A successful lazy afternoon. Naia grinned as both she and Pounamu entered the water and started swimming back towards the familiar, bright coral reef marking their home sea. A flash of crimson towards the right showed that her brother had indeed been lingering closely nearby just in case of emergencies. Even though Naia did complain about her family being too protective at times a small smile did cross her face. It did feel nice to have someone watching out for her on occasion. Maybe Pounamu’s worry had gotten to her or she had just grown used to having the other girl as a support. Naia could only hope that in the future she could convince Pounamu to go on some adventures with her. Today was just a sample of all the future trips she had in mind! When they got older she could only hope that Pounamu would agree to keep supporting her and even come along on occasion.
She could only hope.
