oO A Time of Change - Backdated Solo Oo

XXXXXXXXXXX.Word Count
XXXXXXXXXX1562

Naevius had never been to sure what would happen after her father took the throne. She knew her life was going to change, and it had, but never that this would happen. It was always a possibility just not one that she thought would actually happen. It was heartbreaking and put her in such a hard position so it was good that she had plenty of time to think about it on the ride to the vacation home. She briefly wondered if Varinia would be sent from the compound to help her, not that she needed help but it would be nice to have a friend around when she would be expected to host her future in-laws. Just the thought made her want to vomit. Her thoughts turned towards Sebastien and how close they had gotten lately. What would he think? Nae knew he thought the world of her father and the chance that he had given a poor oban boy who had nothing and gave him everything. She knew he already had thought their chances of being together as slim and now there wasn’t any way she thought she could convince him it was okay. What could she even tell him to get him to see this wasn’t what she wanted? She didn’t want a loveless marriage. A marriage of convienence just to appease some old stupid nobles. How was this fair to her? She already knew the answer but that didn’t make it okay. She’d drawn the short stick this lifetime it appeared. Most others would argue she’d drawn the best stick she could’ve. Who wouldn’t want to be a princess and perhaps even queen in the future? That answer? Naevius. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. She wouldn’t mind it if she could be happy. If she could have the man she wanted. At this point, there probably wasn’t any reason to even contemplate what ifs. Naevius couldn’t see her way out of this one unless she gave up her crown. The more she thought about it, the more she was willing to do it to give herself and Sebastien the chance they deserved. But would he still want to be with her? After this stupid meeting was over with, she’d go back to the compound and talk to him about it. They could run away together. Run away to Yael or Belrea taming beasts as they went. It could work and the young woman could see herself happy. If only.

She’d been at her family’s vacation home for a little over a day when Varinia arrived with some other things for her from the compound. Her friend had sadly also handed her a letter addressed, Seb’s script writing her name across it. It was pretty short and sweet, to the point, as Sebastien often had been. He was leaving for some grand adventure for the king. He was unsure how long he would be gone. She shouldn’t wait for him though he’d remember her fondly. The tears had fallen of their own accord. It was almost as if her father had known, but how could he? They were so careful. She could no sooner stop the tears than she could make the moon rise at noon. Naevius found herself sleeping for most of the day and into the morning, her face still holding the tracks from her tears. Her eyes were red and dry when she was awoken. Her betrothed and his family would be arriving that day and it would be expected that she would play her part. Now, with a broken heart and all, she got up to play the part that was written for her as she found herself with no other options.

Naevius helped make sure the estate was being prepared with enough rooms for them though she was never given a number of how many guests to expect. She cleaned herself up. Dressed like a princess and looked every bit the Oban Princess that was expected of her except for the slight red and puffiness of her eyes from crying too much. Her thoughts had slipped and she found herself having spaced out when she heard the gates opening. Naevius rose from her favorite chair in her room and went down to greet her guests. Yet, she was surprised to see a single figure standing apart from her staff as he finished taking the tack off the large Janarim he had apparently ridden to her family’s home. The man was tall; tall enough he’d stand a significant height above her. His long dark auburn hair was pulled into a knot at the base of his neck likely to keep it from tangling when he rode. Even Nae had to admit he struck a pretty impressive figure. Once his beast was cared for and the tack given to one of the taming apprentices he turned towards her. His eyes were calculating but at the same time there was a certain warmth to him. It somewhat eased her nerves that there wasn’t a coldness to his eyes that so many noble men had when they looked at a woman, especially one of her stature. ”Hello Princess Naevius. My name is Vasili. I apologize for my lack of entourage. I assure you it was not intended as a slight to you or your family. My family is just...yeah.” He almost looked a little embarrassed that he had arrived alone. Nae shook her head ever so slightly. ”Welcome, Vasili, please come in.”

Naevius led her new betrothed through to one of the prepared rooms, the largest of the rooms in fact. He towered behind her as he followed with a medium sized bag in hand. He said nothing and didn’t appear to expect her to entertain him at the moment. Opening the door, she simply pushed it open and stayed outside. She wasn’t going to put herself in what would be his personal space. Vasili seemed to stand just outside as he contemplated her. After what seemed like an extended period of time, he nodded his head and said a small ”Thank you.” He walked in and looked around. His eyes covered the room the way a soldier would, something that Nae took note of. ”I’m sure you’re tired after your journey. I’ll let you rest up. Dinner will be in about an hour. I’ll have someone come up to collect you. I’ll see you then.” Nae didn’t really want to stick around for conversation so she promptly turned and left him staring after her.

As much as she tried to keep it together tears still fell as she made her way quickly to her room at the other end of the vacation home. It took all of that next hour to compose herself for dinner. How was she supposed to deal with this? It was one thing to have to entertain other nobles. It was an entirely different issue to have to deal with this one singular man whom she was supposed to marry in the near future. She made her way down early only to find he was already seated and talking with some of the staff that maintained the house. He seemed to smile easily with them, talking animatedly about something, gesturing wildly with his hands. From what Nae could gather he seemed to be telling a battle story. Once one of the staff came over to talk to her Vasili realized she had arrived and he seemed to withdraw into himself, becoming much more reserved as was fitting their stations. Dinner passed by with small talk, pleasant but lacking substance. It seemed as if neither knew just what to make of their situation. When they had both finished dessert, Naevius rose to leave but stopped upon hearing Vasili’s chair scrape as he stood up quickly. ”Princess wait. Please.” He walked over quickly. ”I know you’re not happy with this arrangement, with reason.” He added before continuing. His face was serious but there was something else underneath. She couldn’t help but wonder what his story was. Normally she knew most about the Oban nobility but couldn’t seem to remember much about a Vasili. Perhaps it was because he was old blood who followed the old king. Yet, she couldn’t figure out what he was trying to get at. ”Well, if that’s all, I’ll be going now.” She could see the slight shift in him yet again, he stood up straight once more and cleared his throat. ”I suppose it is. Goodnight, Princess.” And as if he wanted to be able to have the last word, he turned on his heel and left. The rest of the visit was rather uneventful. They were pleasant to each other. They made small talk and still Naevius could see the wall that they kept up between each other was still firmly intact. She said goodbye to him at the end of the week, they hugged awkwardly before he lept atop his janarim and left once more. Vasili looked back once before he went through the gate before spurring his mount faster and leaving. Even with him gone Naevius found it hard to find the peace she once had. ”’Til next time.”

oO Perhaps We Could - A Backdated Solo Oo

A few months later, she had been returned to the compound and working with one of her father’s advisors to help keep the business going while also maintaining her royal duties. Naevius was working on some paperwork when she got notified that someone was approaching the compound on a janarim. Nae watched them approach before she noticed the familiar gold hide of the janarim combined with the knotted bun hairstyle of his rider. She sighed as she realized who it was coming to call on her. The past couple of months it had been easier to forget. There were reminders of Seb everywhere but at least she hadn’t had a betrothed wandering the halls reminding her exactly of her current situation. Schooling her features once more she waited as he dismounted, a rather large bag held carefully in front of him. This time he didn’t wait to take care of his janarim before walking directly to her. ”Princess, can we have a minute alone?” While she didn’t think he would do anything to her there was a certain excitement in his eyes that both concerned her and made her curious as to what could cause his excitement. Nodding, she led him inside after he issued a quick command to his janarim who promptly laid down to sun itself. Neatly stacking the papers she had been working on, she waited patiently while he closed the door causing her to raise an eyebrow at him. ”I got here as soon as I could though unfortunately not fast enough.” His words made a small seed of worry knot in her stomach. Was something wrong? Had he come from the capital? Was it something else with the dretch? He continued without waiting for her to say anything. ”May I?” He gestured to her desk. Once she nodded he gently set his bag down on the now cleared surface. ”I had intended to bring you the egg I found, but it turns out I’m only gifted at riding beasts, not telling how long until they hatch. I had traveled to Zena after our meeting. I needed time to think things through. I had a friend once who told me they climbed this one particular mountain and they came down a different person; more sure of themselves and knowing what they wanted. I figured it couldn’t hurt. Instead I happened upon this little guy. I ended up finding some poachers who had killed the mother and taken the eggs from the nest. The only one they had left was this one. Which I intended on bringing back as an egg but that didn’t go according to plan.” At that, he pulled out a rather large fledgling bird. Nae tried to hold in her gasp but wasn’t quite successful. It wasn’t just any bird, it was a chiavi. She thought they were still rather rare, Nae hadn’t seen one herself. ”It’s for you.” Vasili said softly, motioning her to come forward to see. Naevius took small steps forward, the chiavi tilted it’s head at her as if to say ‘what, you’ve never seen my kind before?’ She reached a hand out letting the chiavi make its own decisions. Slowly it leaned it’s head into her hand and seemed content to stay there. ”It hatched a couple of days ago as I was on my journey here. It’s grown a lot in just that time.” He mused as he watched her, a smile playing on his lips. Obviously he had made the right decision. Naevius looked up at him with the happiest look she’s had on her face for the last half year or so. ”Thank you. It really means a lot.” While her attention turned back to the chiavi, Vasili continued to watch her, a different look in his eye than before.

They stayed in her office for quite some time giving Nae time to bond with the bird and since Nae hadn’t expressly asked him to leave Vasili stayed and offered what knowledge he had of both the chiavi and it’s homeland. It wasn’t idle small talk, it was actual deep conversation. Nae was able to talk to him and forget he was the guy she was betrothed to and talk to him as she would a friend. It was somewhere in between when he got there and when they walked outside to see the sun was already setting that she realized this. Once they made sure her newest companion was made comfortable, Vasili started gathering up his things and made his way to his janarim who still waited patiently. The hands around the compound had obviously made sure it was comfortable, evidence of food and water lay around the area. Vasili was about to mount up when Nae felt the urge to stop him. ”Vasili wait…” Surprise lifted his eyebrows as he turned back to face her. Before either of them knew it, she had her arms around his waist giving him a hug. Though brief, as she remembered herself, it was still a hug. Nae stepped away quickly. ”I-uh-I mean. It’s probably not safe to travel at night. You could...um...stay here and leave in the morning if you wanted.” The princess’ cheeks colored a bit pink as her betrothed stood there awkwardly. ”Sure, I’d like that, Naevius.” Together they got his janarim settled into it’s own pen before getting Vasili himself settled in a room. Vasili surprised her with the knowledge that he could cook as he whipped up a small meal for them to enjoy together, the hesitating both of them had been doing was lessened as they began to enjoy each others company.

As the weeks went by, Vasili was becoming a fixture at the compound. He’d come and stay for a few days before either leaving for business or for his own reasons. Anyone could tell that they became more at ease with not just the other but also being together. If you were to ask one of the staff who saw them together frequently if they were in love, they might be hesitant to say yes. It was plain as day that they had some sort of relationship, they hugged and laughed together often enough. Occasionally you’d see a small kiss here or there, particularly if Vasili was going to be on an extended trip or if he had just returned from one. Yet there wasn’t as much affection between them as you might expect of young lovers. Naevius found herself becoming comfortable around him, finding herself thinking of him less as ‘the betrothed’ to just Vasili. As a friend. As a companion. It felt odd when he left on his long trips. She found herself missing him and his kind little gestures he always seemed to find time to do. He was a staple in her life now, one she found herself grateful for regardless of the way he came into her life. His presence and steady support helped her heart to heal.

He had just returned from one of those long trips. She was at her desk doing the usual paperwork while he sat in her favorite chair doing his own. ”Vasili?” She asked. ”Hm?” He responded, not looking up from his work until it appeared she wasn’t going to speak until she had his full attention. Setting his stuff to the side, Vasili sat up and towards her. ”What is it Nae?” She bit her lip, an old nervous habit, ”Do you think this could work? Could we get married?” He couldn’t help but smile kindly. ”If that’s your way of asking me to marry you then, while unconventional, I accept.” He couldn’t help but tease her a little. ”Naevius, while I know I’m not the guy you imagined you’d marry. I know I could at least make you happy. If the past month or so isn’t enough proof. Could you trust me enough to at least keep that promise?” Nae didn’t have to think about his question as much as she thought she would. She nodded. ”I think I’m capable of that at least.” She blushed as she smiled. ”I suppose we should inform our families and set a date before they can. I’ll take care of it so you can focus on the business.” He stood and gave her a kiss on the forehead before leaving the office, presumably to make his way back to the capital or to at least send some letters with riders. Nae didn’t know if she could ever truly love him but they could be happy together. And maybe that was good enough.

oO I'm not Exactly Complaining - A Backdated Solo Oo

XXXXXXXXXXX.Word Count
XXXXXXXXXX1258

Naevius tried to school her face although it was a challenge. Her father had hired a wedding planner who was trying to make this large extravagant wedding with all this frilly nonsense. She suppressed a sigh as she remembered her father’s face when she and Vasili had visited the capital together, holding hands for her father’s benefit. He had been over the moon that ‘her daughter had finally fallen in love’ and ‘what a strapping young lad’ Vasili turned out to be. She had been relieved that he was so happy but then again why wouldn’t he be? His council was now satisfied that they’d gotten their princess married off to one of the old blood families who had supported the old king. Perhaps they thought they could make things return to how they were. Nae’s mouth quirked at that though. Vasili was not that kind of person, at least she thought so. He was kind in small ways to not just her but everyone he encountered. He treated people with respect no matter their station. He worked hard to get to his position in the Oban Army even though he had no reason to be. He was the ‘spare’ as his family called him. Her father had once thought it a slight that his advisors would want his ONLY daughter to marry someone who wasn’t even an heir to a family yet he was the only one that wasn’t already married or too young so he had conceded. Because of all this, Vasili had once thought he would be afforded the freedom of choice: be who he wanted to be, be with who he wanted to be. He had all that up until Nae. There had been someone he’d had a crush on when he was pulled abruptly from Belrea and told to go meet her at her family vacation home. Naevius had not been what he expected for his future and he had resented that at first until he got to know her. She wasn’t like the other nobles. She was different, like him.

Vasili squeezed her hand as she apparently missed a question Cinna, the wedding planner, had asked of her while she day dreamed about Vasili and the not so distant past. Nae cleared her throat, ”I’m sorry, could you repeat the question.” Cinna sighed making it seem like this wasn’t the first time he had to repeat himself. To his credit, it wasn’t, and likely wouldn’t be the last. If only she could just have Varinia deal with this man it would make things a whole bunch easier. Not only did her friend have some awesome fashion sense but she also didn’t tend to take much crap from people. Maybe she should be more like her, she was the Oban Princess after all. ”I asked if you’d like this pink maroon lace to be imported or if you would rather go with a deep gold.” Naevius blinked at him a few times. If she was honest with herself she wasn’t really sure exactly what they were talking about. Decorations? Tablecloths? Her dress? She sighed as she stood up, ”So here’s the deal. I’ll work with a designer for my dress. You get no say over that. The ceremony will be held in the palace, keep the decorations tasteful, thin crimson fabric with golden accents to accentuate the hall. Keep it light and flowing. The dinner and the party afterwards will be held outside to accommodate the large number of people. The decorations there will also be kept tastefully and minimal. Accentuate the space you’re using, don’t MAKE a space. Gold accents as well as small green gems added here and there for contrast. Do NOT go overboard. Send me your selections and if I like them then I’ll give you the go ahead. You have two days for your first draft.” With that, Nae pulled Vasili’s hand gently to indicate they were leaving and left the wedding planner’s mouth open in astonishment behind her. She didn’t often act like a stuck up royal but perhaps it was overdue in some cases.

The engaged couple sat in her favorite little courtyard enjoying a drink after their meeting with the wedding planner. ”I don’t think Cinna expected you to speak to him in such a way.” There was a hint of laughter to his voice that made Naevius smile. ”Perhaps he had forgotten who he was talking to. Just because I don’t act like some of the other nobles doesn’t mean he can try to steam roll me.” He smiled back at her as they sat in companionable silence as they enjoyed the garden view and their drinks. ”Vasili...I know we’re not really a…” She paused as she tried to classify their relationship. ”Conventional couple. But because of my status...certain things are going to be expected of me. Of us.” Vasili’s eyes widened in understanding. Perhaps he hadn’t really thought of it. That because they were more of companions than lovers he hadn’t thought of the possibility of children. ”Ah, I see. You mean they’ll expect us to produce an heir.” Naevius nodded slowly. ”Vasili...I know I’m not exactly who you thought-” ”Are you kidding me right now Naevius?” Taken by surprise by his interruption, she looked at him in surprise. ”Have you seen yourself, Nae? Sure you’re not really who I thought I would marry but I’m not exactly complaining over here. Quite frankly you’re gorgeous. You’re amazingly kind and generous for someone of your stature. How could I not fall in l-” Vasili caught himself before he could speak his true feelings for her but they both knew what he was about to say. He laughed awkwardly. ”Lets just say it isn’t difficult to imagine having a family with you.” Vasili admitted softly. Naevius was shocked, she hadn’t really been aware of his true feelings towards her. She thought her feelings of companionship were mutual. Unsure what to say, Nae just nodded. ”I understand.” It seemed Vasili was on board with the idea of children. She had never really imagined herself as a parent, as a mom. Despite that, the idea of being able to teach her child all the kinds of things her mother had taught her before she passed brought tears to her eyes. Being able to teach her child all kinds of things about beasts and Vasili teaching them how to ride. Nae could tell that he’d be a good father but would she be a good mother? At least she would have someone who loved her to help her through it, even if all the feelings weren’t returned. Oba needed an heir. Nae wanted happiness. Having a child with Vasili could bring both couldn’t it? While she wasn’t sure if she was ready to be a mother, Naevius knew she would have people she could depend on to help her. Varinia would be around, she could ask her father for advice, and of course Vasili. You’re not exactly hard to look at either, Vasili. She thought. Maybe it wouldn’t be so difficult, to have a family with you. Their child would be loved, most of all by their parents.

oO New beginnings, two little feet, and Happiness - A Backdated Solo Oo

XXXXXXXXXXX.Word Count
XXXXXXXXXX1500

The next couple of weeks passed without much time to themselves. Between wedding plans and each of them dealing with their own ventures: Nae’s business and Vasili’s army things. They took the little moments between to check in on each other and still the weeks before the wedding blew by in a blur. Gown fittings, overseeing Cinna with his different drafts of the plans until she was finally satisfied. It caused her to be a little sleep deprived trying to juggle all the various things but it was what she needed to do so she did. It was the night before the wedding and while she should be getting a good nights sleep before being woken up early for the wedding preparations, Nae was working on paperwork for the business. The door opened slowly as Vasili walked in. ”What are you doing up still, Nae?” He asked gently as he squeezed some of the tension out of her shoulders. ”There’s just too much to do. I can’t really afford to take a day off.” Though her shoulders relaxed significantly under his gentle fingers. ”It’s already night time so you’re not taking a day off, you’re just taking the day off.” He said with some sass. Knowing he was right in one way or another, Naevius sighed as she stacked the rest of the papers together to keep her desk nice and organized. ”After tomorrow a lot of stress will be gone and we can just enjoy life, okay?” She nodded back and stood, leaving her work behind her. Vasili led her to her bedroom, gave her a small kiss before retreating to his own. Nae watched him go with a small smile with something that was maybe close to longing before entering her room and quickly falling asleep.

She didn’t get near as much sleep as she would have liked as she had not only Varinia but others bursting in as well. Her dress was brought in and hung on the wall waiting for her. She was bathed with special herbs and flowers, her hair and body dried before some temporary tattoos as individual tributes to their gods were applied. While some of them would be hidden by her dress the other tributes to their gods would be visible. Multiple people were working at once to get things done in decent time. On her forehead was a tribute to Nerad. Drach came next, with his tribute flowing from her neck onto her shoulders around her crystals, mingling with that of On’os which sat at the base of her neck on her back. Continuing down, a tribute for Essd lay on top of her sternum. Down her right arm was for Ubeli while her counterpart Atun claimed the left. A tribute for Hatald was put low under and around her belly button. A long pattern was made down her spine for Jonal. Lastly, the tops of her feet were also decorated: the right for Kiyom and the left for Lenoxe. Once there was something for all their dieties on her body they deemed her done and waited for it to dry before scraping off the excess to just leave the pattern. They did her hair next, pulling it away from her face and braiding it down her back adding in little gold trinkets here and there. Some made little tinkling noises whenever she moved. The day went by quickly and slowly at the same time. Before she knew it, her father was knocking on her door as she stood in the middle of her room all ready for the ceremony. ”Wow…” The king stood there speechless for a few moments before he recovered. ”I see your mother’s features in you like this…” Naevius heard him mutter a few small prayers to the gods. It was then that Naevius noticed he was holding a box. At that point her father held it out and opened it. Inside was some jewelry she hadn’t seen in years but would recognize anywhere. ”Mom’s wedding set?” Naevius asked, her voice small and sad. Her father nodded and first took out the necklace. It was so intricately done, somewhat stiff but had a weaving pattern to it that fell just above the hollow of her throat that left a large garnet hanging perfectly. A bracelet for each wrist matched. Earrings with smaller garnets and gold pieces that went around the rim of her ears. Nae did everything she could to keep from crying but still one escaped that was wiped lovingly by her father. ”I think someone’s waiting for you.” They made their way down the hall towards the ballroom where the ceremony would take place. Naevius stared in awe at how the halls were decorated, using the colors and make of fabric she had dictated that she had preferred, and mentally commended Cinna for taking her recommendations and doing something amazing. She heard the music change as the doors were opened. Her eyes went directly to Vasili who was all decked out in his military garb. His eyes widened at seeing her before his face was overtaken by the biggest grin. Nae barely heard most of the ceremony. She said what she was supposed to but couldn’t help but feel happy and respected from the look on Vasili’s face. They went down the receiving line and greeted and thanked all their guests on the way out to the outdoor reception area, which Cinna had also done amazingly on accentuating the space. The reception started in full swing once they arrived; a full buffet, drinks, hired dancers, the full works. The newly married couple ate and danced for the first portion of the reception, their guests gladly partaking in the buffet and open kegs. Oban weddings being notorious for making drinking bets happen. The couple laughed at some of the antics and watched as the children were coralled led out by some nannies before the party crossed the line. It was at this point they easily made a mutual decision to leave the party early. Unable to completely slip through the party unnoticed, while most of the party-goers were well in their cups, a select few had either restrained themselves or not started at all. They said goodnight to all those, including her father, before sneaking out and made their way to the suite that had been prepared for them. Already having decided they would consummate their marriage as was proper they made sure the door was locked and curtains closed before they explored their relationship on a different level.

The couple honeymooned at her family’s vacation home for the next couple of weeks before deciding to take a trip to Matori to enjoy the water. They spent the following weeks traveling up the Matorian coasts enjoying the water. It was one of these days they made their way into Setal that an older Matorian woman came out of an obviously old hut and made her way towards them. Naevius respectfully pulled her shawl to cover more of herself in her bathing suit. The older woman respectfully bowed and the couple lowered their heads in respect for the woman and her age. ”I apologize for interrupting your day, my lady, but I would recognize your face anywhere.” The woman’s voice was raspy with age, she had clearly lived longer than it appeared. ”I apologize, ma’am, but I don’t recognize you.” Naevius tried to be as polite as she could. The woman smiled at her in response. ”Oh sweetheart I wouldn’t expect you to. The last time I saw you was at your mother’s funeral. My name is Thala and I was a servant in your mother’s family household for a few years. When your grandparents had gone to her funeral I accompanied them. I just have to say you have that same glow about you as your mother did when she was pregnant with you. Do the healers have a prediction for the gender yet?” Thala asked as she patted Nae’s hand affectionately. Dumbfounded, Naevius and Vasili looked at each other in shock. ”She’s pregnant??” Vasili exclaimed, clearly excited. ”How can you be so sure?” He asked further. Thala chuckled as she gently reached up to pat his shoulder. ”I was a midwife for many years, it's as clear to me as the nose on my face. Well, I’ll leave you to your conversation, I’m sure there will be plenty.” And with that, the old matorian walked back to her hut. Naevius and Vasili turned towards each other. ”We’re going to be parents.” Naevius said in disbelief yet a little excitement colored her voice. Vasili leaned down and kissed her, a hand caressing her stomach. ”To new beginnings, two little feet, and happiness.”

oO Love Continued Oo

Naevius couldn't help the tears that rolled down her cheeks. She was glad they had decided to send him off secretly. It was in part for Nicias' own safety and in part because Naevius knew she would cry when sending her first baby, her only baby so far, off on his first adventure from home. He had good company, sure, but all it took was one person and some bad intentions for things to turn that table the other way. She feared for her son, as any mother would, but she was also excited for him. There was much to learn in the rest of Tendaji and while she had never really had that wanderlust she had seen the thirst for knowledge in Nicias' eyes when he was just a youngling. So she understood. They both did. But that didn't make it any easier on the two parents. Vasili himself wished he were able to send more with his son in the way of protection. But the boy had been training hard, and he would have some other hellions in the making alongside him. He took comfort knowing they had prepared him the best that they could from the moment they knew of his intentions.

Naevius felt the course fingertips of her husband's hands as he wiped away her tears. "He will be fine, Naev, we've done what we could for him to ser him up for success." The woman sighed, "I know, but it doesn't make it any easier! I feel like just yesterday he was learning to walk, and now he's walking on out of here…" Vasili laughed, "Children always grow up. It's just a part of life." He had a little smirk on his face as he lifted her gaze up to his. "So is now an appropriate time to continue that conversation from the other day?"

"What? About the Xaaran racing or the other thing?" Nae asked with a blush. Vasili's eyebrow raise made the blush deepen. "But we can still race Xaaran or even janarim if you want to settle a when." It was her turn to raise an eyebrow at him. "I'm pretty sure I can be one hundred percent confident when I tell you don't need an outcome of a race to let me know when the time is right. But I will race you there." She said with a laugh and took off towards their wing. Vasili just laughed and sighed, he hoped his wife never changed. He took a few moments to collect the slippers she discarded before racing off and decided he'd let her think she won.
-----

The two hadn't left their suites until the next morning when they went to the kitchens to eat a light breakfast. Both enjoyed a quiet meal of fruit and cheese as well as some freshly baked bread as they readied themselves for the day. "Do you think he'd feel like were trying to replace him?" Naevius asked suddenly. Vasili cocked his head at her as he finished the piece of cheese he had just put in his mouth before replying. "No, Nae, I don't think he'll feel that way. He's a smart lad." Nae picked at a piece of bread, tearing it into small pieces before putting each piece in her mouth. "I just worry he'll be hurt that we waited until he was out of the house to try for another child." He sighed, sometimes his poor wife just worried about things a little too much. "He'll understand that it's hard to raise children with the pressures we're under in our positions in life. I think he knows just how hard we have worked to give him as much freedom as we could. He'll be excited, I'm sure, to have a little to teach all the ropes to. We just have to work on the whole 'getting him a sibling' part." He winked at her and got an eye roll in response. "We both know it'll take more than one night." He said with a laugh and was answered with a blush. Vasili laughed and popped another piece of cheese in his mouth before standing and giving her a kiss on the top of the head. "I'll get you out of your meetings after mine are finished." And with that, he left his blushing wife and would come back to that discussion at a later time.

It hadn’t taken them too long to get a letter written and sent to Nicias. They wanted to make sure he could find out early enough that he could come home and be able to meet his baby brother or sister not long after their birth. He had sent a letter back pretty quickly letting them know he would be back before the baby should arrive and that he was excited about having a sibling. It eased some of the fears she had about him feeling as if they were trying to replace him. His letter had seemed really excited and that only increased Naevius’ own excitement. Sooner than she thought was possible, her belly was large and she had trouble moving around too much. Vasili had convinced her a few weeks back that it was time to stop working and just get ready for the baby. It was hard with how much she knew they needed to do but he was right that they also had a lot to do to get ready for the new baby. It had been awhile since Nicias was a baby so many things had to be cleaned from storage or bought new. And before she knew it, it was baby time. Nicias had returned home the previous week and was waiting nervously for his sibling, hoping nothing happened to his Mom or the baby during the birth. Vasili stayed by her side throughout the entire birth, helping to keep her calm and strong. It was a long labor but it was well worth it. The midwife cleaned up a small little baby who was crying softly and placed her on Naevius for some skin to skin. Naevius cried as she looked down on the perfect little girl. ”Hanaeko.” She said quietly, choosing a name with roots of her own Mother’s name. ”Welcome to the world little one.”

Naevius had returned to the capital a few days ago and yet her mind was still elsewhere. Never had she had this trouble before. She took that thought back…she did remember one time when her mind had trouble turning from odd topics to the work at hand. It was right when her father had been made king…right after the uprising from the rest of the lands they now knew as Tendaji. Back then, she had transitioned into the role as princess with seeming ease but the few that had been close to her knew that it had been anything but. Her dream and her family’s legacy had been for her to take over the taming business that was booming with the kinds of training they provided to the war beasts the Oban Army used. She relied heavily on her now best friend Varinia and, at the time, her crush Sebastien. This time her thoughts kept straying in a similar fashion but not because she had different desires for her future but because she wished an outcome of a situation had been different. It was a rare time that Naevius felt regret, she was normally pretty sure of herself and her decisions. But now, her thoughts were turning towards the female sermal who Naevius had tried so very hard to work with and protect her and her pack but the male sermal had made that impossible. Now the female sermal was out there with what was left of her pack alone…possibly hurt…and without a home. She would have to try and send some scouts to the area to discover what they could find…with strict orders to not engage of course. Perhaps she would do that and it could put her mind at ease.

It had been dangerous and not advised for her to have gone out towards Sauti the the first place but she had been a concerned mother wondering where her son had gone to. She knew it was a good thing that Nicias had some time to explore but as someone who did not have those kinds of luxuries in her childhood, it made her nervous for his well being. Nicias was a capable boy, she knew that and yet her heart had been fearful. While she did not find her son, she had managed to stop into a few villages whose inn keeper seemed to remember a young man matching the description of her son. One of them even thought they remembered seeing Nicias with another, an Oban woman. Her heart had squeezed hoping he had found Reyna and would be content to come home. However, when Naevius returned after the outing with the Sermals, her son had still not returned. He had been seen by others so Naevius was pretty sure he was taking care of himself alright. Nic had been required to take guards with him although not as many as she would have liked but again she reminded herself that the boy needed some freedom. She just hoped that freedom wouldn’t cost him anything. Naevius lived the life that she did so that perhaps her children could live differently. It was not an easy life that they lived like some might believe. There were luxuries in abundance sure, but there were just as many people willing to stab you in the back if it will advance themselves or their cause. It often caused Naevius and her husband to have to raise their children differently than they would have liked had they been able to grow up outside of the capital. While Nicias had grown up well and with a steady head on his shoulders, Nae often attributed that to his proximity around Reyna and ability to have a semi-normal childhood under the attention of Varinia. Now it was Hanaeko that Naevius worried about most. Worried that she would not grasp the important lessons she was being taught about life not just among royalty but also for life in general. With this reflection, Naevius decided she would try to do more to nudge Hanaeko in the right direction.
