“My apologies, to both of you.” Miros ducked his head, eyes averted. He should have more discipline than that. “I got ahead of myself.

Thirst hadn’t even been a consideration. Miros sucked in a deep breath to calm himself, nerves and legs shaking with anticipation. Watching Fawn and Talltale take to the stream made Miros aware of the dryness in his mouth, the burning of his lungs from running all the way here, the sweat rolling down his flanks. His tongue sat heavy against the roof of his mouth. Miros ambled to the stream and dipped his muzzle to the water.

Even though the stream was tepid from the barrens, it felt cool as ice against his sweltering face. Rivulets flooded down his chin as he lifted his head. He turned quickly and rubbed the dripping water onto his withers.

He’d been thirstier than he realized.

Miros caught Fawn’s eye and nodded. “Please.

He forced himself to stillness. He wouldn’t crowd her while she worked her magic, as much as he wanted to watch, to witness as this tiny half-dead seed was rejuvenated once again. He watched his mother work as often as he could, studiously intent on learning her secrets. His sister, too, when she had still been around. Neither of them were botanic users.

It’ll work,” he said, as much to himself as to Fawn. “I believe in you.

He needed to, for his sake.

Fawn grinned at the buck before looking at the seed again. Here would go everything. She can only hope that her newly awakened gift can bring life to something that is seemingly dead from an area that is in itself considered dead... Well, the greater part of it. There was some green around the ancient oak that had blessed her with her gift and ability.

Concentrating on the task at hand she closed her eyes as her horn started to glow a soft green color. After a moment or two of this, she opening her eyes and touched it to the seed in Talltale's paw. She held it there as she concentrated more, soon pulling away as the glow dimmed, but remained around the seed. The glow flickered and soon went out.

Fawn watched a moment before she frowned. Her she failed her first chance? Reaching forward she sniffed at it before there was a small pop at one end of the seed. Stepping back as green started to show through the cracks. Her eyes widened as the seed opened to reveal a small shoot. It was tiny at first before growing at least an inch or so before stopping.

"It actually worked." Fawn said before she met the ground, legs folding beneath her.

Talltale hopped over to Fawn still clutching the newly sprouted seed to his chest. There was a worried expression on his face as he looked at her. He was no healer, but then again he never seen anyone use such magics before.

"You alright there?" he asked poking her muzzle gently.

"I think so, but that took a lot out of me, and I am starting to get a headache." Fawn said reassuringly, or as much as she could still laying on the ground. "But hey, we made something out of nothing, huh, Miros?"

Miros couldn’t look away, he couldn’t blink. The first pop of green wriggling free from the seed made his heart stammer like frightened jack hop. It was the most gorgeous thing he’d ever witnessed. More beautiful than the spring blooms he’d been born into or the strange art left behind by the others. Miros determined, at that moment, that green was his favorite color. A symbol of new life just emerging into the world.

He lowered his muzzle toward the seed in hesitant increments, nostrils flared but too afraid to suck in a breath.

It’s amazing,” he whispered, “It’s so beautiful.”

His ear flicked as Fawn fell to her knees. He lurched to her side, bounding carefully around Talltale and the precious, sprouting seed.

It was all you,” he replied, his voice soft and resonant with awe. “If you’d like, you can lean on me to get back to Homewood. I don’t mind. I think I could find some herbs to help your headache too, my mother-”

He hadn’t thought about his mother at all while watching the seed sprout. Strange. She should have been the first thing on his mind. That he had helped make this thing happen and how proud she would be of him. He’d been too swept up in the moment.

Miros cleared his throat,” I’ve been taught how to fix something to relieve pain. It’s not as good as a proper spell by a vivify user, but it should help a little.

But first…” Miros glanced around the little peninsula. He spotted a patch of dirt that was dark with moisture from the stream and pressed his hoof into it, creating a shallow impression. “We should bury the seed, so it has a chance to grow into whatever it was meant to be.

Fawn gave a wary grin in Miros' direction. She watched him as he went over to a spot and made a small hole to place the seed in. Fawn had gotten back to her hooves, not wanting to fall asleep here on the edges of the barrens where she was sure to be vulnerable. Talltale had hopped over to where Miros was and placed the small sprouted seed into the ground and placed soil over it to protect it.

"I think I will be alright once I get some rest. Being new to it, it will take some practice to build up some stamina to go without tiring." She said as she watched the two. "But no one can say that everything in the barrens is dead. Just have to look closely."

To this she grinned even wider as she sagged a little before straightening up. She really just wanted to go home and get some sleep. All the running and then the use of her newly awakened ability. It was taxing on the body, that and the heat that had been beating down on them all day throughout this journey. Fawn could only imagine the heat being worse for Miros with his dark coloring. Shaking her head, she looked towards the deeper refuges of Homewood, her moss bed was calling. Granted it was out in the open, she didn't really care.

"Also, you still have a mother around?" she asked kinda absentmindedly thinking back to her own past and gives a shiver. "Nevermind. But this day was certainly an interesting one. I am sure that we will bump into each other again. Come on Talltale, lets head home." Fawn called to the Jack Hop whom hopped after the strawberry roan doe, both headed deeper into the trees and towards home.

Still?” Miros ears snapped back toward his neck. What did she mean by still? Sure, he was a fully grown buck, but he wasn’t so many winters old as to have lost his mother. The thought was ice in his veins and he shivered despite the relentless heat of the barrens. Miros opened his mouth to inquire further, but Fawn had already turned away and was heady back to Homewood.

Miros glanced down at the tiny sprout. The thought of leaving it here alone when it had just started it’s life…

He couldn’t.

Miros lowered himself gingerly to the patch of soil, uncaring that his tail flipped into the tiny stream. He would dry quickly enough with the sun pounding down on him.

It was nice meeting you!” He called to Fawn and Talltale as they took the wood.

He’d see them again, he was sure of it.

He’d have to. What did she mean about his mother?

End.
