Day #: O2l
Theme: Gems
Stay Golden“Stay golden,” you said,
a text to my phone late at night.
I had tried to convince you to sell me
something I could use to end my life.
You wouldn’t hand it over.
Instead, you lit your pipe and inhaled deeply,
peering at me over your thick rimmed glasses.
We both knew you weren’t smoking tobacco,
but you handed it to me regardless.
I drew in a large breath, held it and released
before asking one more time with a dark look in my eyes.
“Please sell it to me.”
“No,” was all you responded.
That was a month ago.
I watched the sun set lower on the horizon as I drove closer towards the place I last saw you,
orange skies lit up like jewels cresting the dark prairie landscape.
In twenty four hours, the whole world rumbled and cracked,
much like the nights small pearls fizzled and popped against the scratchy Brillo.
“Stay golden,” with my name attached at the end of the sentence.
Funny how something so precious a metal can turn into such a sour taste on one’s tongue.
They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend,
but they’re wrong.
You were much more than a unsubstantiated gem.
You were pure gold.
