Red was absolutely enthusiastic; he could feel electricity surging through him, like when lightning strikes close by. It was finally time to shine! As with any hunt, he was naturally drawn to Dove, and he supposed Maple too. She was still young, of course--he thought as if he, himself, was not barely a grown wolf--but it was the pack mind to hunt together.
In a split decision, though, he chose to find the scent on his own. He didn't want to appear as if he was going to let them do all the work so he could claim the glory. And with that, he lowered his nose to the forest floor. The most prevalent scent was the decay of leaves, slightly moist earth (in the forest, it seemed to be in a constant state of moisture despite the dried leaves), and the scent of other pack members. This was typical, though, and he wasn't deterred. The day was young and his hopes were high. Instead, created a pattern of zigzags and loops, trying to pick up the smell of anything alive, fresh, and faintly rabbit.
Role Played Response: Eager and trigger-happy, Magpie thrust her nose to the ground and immediately picked up the sent of what could be the red-tailed hair. She faced a bramble, but that was nothing in the grander scheme of things. She kept her muzzle close to the scent as the rest of the participating wolves independently explored their own leads. Surely she was going to stumble upon something.
Role Played Response: Quickly, Ghost realized every other wolf was snuffling around for the same scent, and decided to dash off deeper into the forest. She didn't pick anything up immediately, but she was positive she would... eventually. When the time was right. In the meantime, she spastically swiveled her head to and fro, attempting to either catch a smell or spot the bright red tail of the hare. Ghost knew her father had been apart of pinning the creature down, slashing its tail with dye. It was odd, her father being of such a high point in the pride, while she hailed from so little. She hoped it afforded her some luck this round.
Role Played Response: Hazel hummed under her breath to vent nervous energy, dancing on the tips of her toes until the stillness came. Finally, finally! Someone would grab the victory today, and surprisingly she was okay if that wasn't her. After all, Hazel was there for the experience, the thrill of the competition: actively participating meant granting her a better muse and a first hand look at the others in action. She could both learn from them and gather material for songs and stories afterwards.
Finding Maple, she nosed her sister affectionately and said, "I'm rooting for you," because she truly was. "No luck needed." Hazel didn't think her sister's bid for alpha was all that strange: she had ambition and drive and willpower, and she could be scary if crossed. Winning the Hare Rush would be a great first step towards that goal! Of course, Hazel just couldn't let her have it so easy was all.
And then as if in the blink of an eye, they were off!
With Ghost Whisper going one way and Magpie going another, Hazel decided to follow her own hunter's instincts for now just to branch out. Her eyes were darting about not just for signs of the red dye but to see what the rest did.

Round 1 Response
Wolf Name: Maple Choice: C
Role Played Response: Maple lifted her head when Hazel found her, tail flicking once in greeting. "If I lose you better win," she retorted, and she meant it. Sure, she wanted to win, but any of her family taking the prize would do. She roughly nuzzled Hazel's cheek before taking her place, crouching low.
And then the game began.
She clung close to the others, her eyes peeled for a flash of red. If she was with them then she'd be able to spot anything they did, on top of keeping a lookout for her own chance. She knew this wouldn't last for long -- she'd find her own chance to bolt out on her own.

Round 1 Response
Wolf Name: Mourning Dove Choice: A
Role Played Response: The first thing that came to hunting was finding the scent to your prey and Mourning Dove wasn't about to run around the forest and hope that she came across it. With her nose to the ground and her mouth open to catch any hare scent, she took off at the howl.
She heard paw steps behind her, were some following her? Well, she couldn't worry about that just now. She would put the swift in Swiftfell as soon as she picked up the hare's scent!
Role Played Response: The howl sounded and Hawkflight...paused. She focused on the hunters and where they were all going. Trusting in their skills in tracking, she followed them. For now.

Below are the consequences of each choice of Round 1!
A. All you can pick up is the smell of earth and leaves, maybe a stale scent of an animal here or there. No luck! 1 point.
B. By breaking off from the pack early, going deeper into the forest, you actually run across a fresh track! 3 points.
C. Unlike when the pack hunts in groups, this event is looking for a single winner. Your pack mates are reluctant to stick close by other wolves and you're forced to break off on your own. 1 point.
Despite how each competitor started their journey, each wolf ended up on their own path in the forest. Now deep in pack territory, the rumble of thunder threatened over head and the wind picked up noticeably. Your trail you initially had picked up has brought you to a cross roads of not two directions... but three! The freshness of the scents, though, were almost indistinguishable. No doubt this was intentionally done by the hare, in order to confuse the pack. Which path do you choose?
A. The path to the west leads through thick forest, riddled with fallen trees and thick brush. Perfect hiding spots for small prey! You go to investigate.
B. Straight ahead, to the north, you think you could follow the scent you picked up at the start. Though it does seem to be faint, something draws you towards it...
C. You hear a rustle to east, causing your ears to perk. You feel the immediate urge to give chase and see what caused it, taking a route that leads towards the cave.

Round 2 Response
Wolf Name: Mourning Dove Choice: A
Role Played Response: Dove may not have been the fastest to get onto the trail, but she was determined to try her best through this competition. The rustling could've been caused by any creature. Surely a hare that had already been harassed by wolves once (due to the painting of its tail) would head into the thickets to hide?
Not wanting to waste any more time, she plunged into the forest her nose to the ground.
Role Played Response: Maple didn't stop as she spotted the fallen trees -- a likely spot for a frightened hare to head. If she was small and trying to flee a pack of wolves she too would hide under something larger and hard for the others to get into. How often had she found squirrels and hares within the holes of trees or underneath a log?
Plenty of times, and hopefully this would be another one of them.
Role Played Response: Hrm...Between the crossroads and the wind picking up, Hazel wasn't sure where to go. It didn't seem following others was the best idea if you wanted to win - but if you wanted a story, well...
Don't think, just act! she told herself. Much as she wanted to continue following Maple, the faint scent she caught pulled her northward. The wind might be playing with her at this point just like the hare was, but it was a solid lead as far as she was concerned.
Role Played Response: The masked she-wolf sniffed low to the ground. Her back bristled with the rumbling thunder. If it rains the scent trail will be much harder to follow. Time to pick up the pace she thought. Hawkflight hoped the dense brush would yield some protection from the rain if the hare went this way. The scent wouldn't get washed away so easily there. So west she headed, into the thick forest.

Round 2 Response
Wolf Name: Forest Shadow Choice: C
Role Played Response: Forest Shadow had ended up on her own and she wasn't sure what to do or where to go, she considered and then chose to follow the sound of noise to the east.
Role Played Response: Magpie didn't often give lesser creatures much credit, which is why she was so surprised that their targeted hare had managed to cause so much confusing, criss crossing through trails in the forest before hopping deeper in, hiding out from its playful predators. Still quick to pull the trigger, she heard a rustling and her ears swiveled around, head jolted up from the forest floor. Something was out there, and she absolutely had to figure out what it was.
