Kat hesitated and gave a little nod, turning back to her cooking food, glad that she had the excuse of that to distract her from the sudden pain of what felt terribly like a rejection. Though perhaps, if she would be a little more rational about it…forcing someone to see you every day just so you could feed them and just so you weren’t lonely…did sound quite a bit desperate.
But she supposed that she was just a bit desperate by now.
She took her time emptying the water from the half cooked pasta and then stirred the steaming food into the pot with the beef, tomatoes and stock, stirring it idly for a moment.
“You can help clean, if you want. And twice a week would be nice. It would not exhaust me. Being alone is worse.”
It had been so long since she had seen her family, and her former best friend…well. That had been about a year now, so obviously that was over. It was over when she was stood up at the waffle place.
Kat straightened and let out a long breath. “I appreciate your friendship. I am greedy. Forgive me.”

“You’re not greedy…” Marissa got up and walked over beside Kat. “I know more than most how hard it is to be alone. Or not have any female friends to talk to.” She leaned her shoulder against Kat’s and smiled. “There are just some things you can’t talk to guys about,” It’s not to say that she didn’t trust Lopezite or Wolframite it’s just some times what she needs is ‘girl talk’ to figure things out. She had never been in a relationship before and so figuring out these feelings she’d been having has been damn near impossible. Marissa picked up the cutting board and carried it over to the sink. “They see a problem and want to fix it when girls just sometimes need someone to listen. Right?” At times it worked but when it didn’t she just wanted to roll her eyes and shake her head. One of her former co-workers used to do that. Pure busy body, constantly offering ways to make things better without even being asked.

Guys? The only guy that she had in her life was Pirate but…but he hadn’t been around in ages. And he really…hadn’t even been around much. And the only friend who had been her age that she had was Mags but…
Well.
“Talking is difficult a lot of times.” The words came softly as she stirred the pot of goulash, watching the sauce bubbling happily and going to pull a bag of shredded cheese from the fridge, laying it beside her on the stove.
“I do not have anyone my age. Two sisters that I do not really see, but they are younger. I have no one, so I want to grip on to who I have. You really…the time for cleaning is later, Marissa…”
As the smell of the cooking food reached her nose, her eyes closed and she sighed.
“I am excited to eat. It will taste good.”

“What’s keeping you from seeing them?” Marissa asked, head tilted to the side curiously she looked over her shoulder. For the better part of her life she had been raised as an only child but that wasn’t always the case. Ethan, her older brother, had died when she was nine. Six years older he had been in high school when the carpool van he was in had been struck by a drunk driver after one of his swim meets had ended. Two kids died that night; him and his best friend Jamie. She understood what it was important for her to avoid coming into contact with her family, her appearance and all would be rather frightening if her glamour were to slip. But she didn’t understand why Kat would have to stay away too. “I’m sorry, it’s an insensitive thing of me to ask.” Marissa finished rinsing off the knife and put it in the dish drainer to dry. "You don't need to answer... I was just curious."

Kat shrugged. “Ah. I just do not. I keep to myself. They like it here…I do not. I miss Russia.” She fell quiet and moved to grab two bowls from the cabinet, taking a moment to pour half of the bag of cheese onto the dish and giving it time to melt a little before stirring again. Finally she scooped the steaming food into the bowls, sprinkling some extra cheese on top and holding out one to Marissa with a smile.
“It is not insensitive. It is just a question. I have food now, we will eat, yes?” She did miss her sisters often but…
Well, sometimes things just weren’t meant to be.
“I hope you enjoy! It is not spicy. An easy recipe that I do very much love.” And she hoped that it would be loved by her new friend…so that perhaps she would remain her friend.

Marissa accepted the bowl with a smile, a small nod of her head and quiet “thank you” then sat down at the table. After blowing on the spoon a few times she took a bite and chewed thoughtfully. “This tastes amazing! So much better than the salad” It was hot, but not spicy which her tongue, and stomach, thanked her for. One small thing that few people picked up on or even knew was that her core body temperature ran several degrees cooler than a normal human’s. Then again, it kind of made sense and was to be expected considering how she was originally awakened. Her skin had turned blue for a reason but that didn’t mean she particularly means she enjoyed being cold either. Quite the opposite really but too much warmth often made the little half-youma drowsy and, if she got too comfortable, Marissa was prone to randomly falling asleep. “Is this recipe one you just found online or is it more of a family recipe.” Kat had made it so quickly and effortlessly that she had to wonder if it was something she made often.

Kat watched her for a moment and found herself smiling. “It is an easy recipe. It was online.” She took a bite of her own food and relaxed, pleased that Marissa seemed like she was enjoying it, and glad that she had admitted that it was better than that miserable excuse for a salad. Everything she cooked was better than that miserable excuse for a salad. A severed toe would be better than that limp, wilted lettuce.
“I told you so. Much better than that salad. I will cook you all good food. You will not eat that nasty trash any longer.”
She reached out and patted the other woman’s pretty ice blue hair and smiled softly. “You are going to be a good friend? I am happy to have a good friend. I am happy to meet you.”
Her honey colored eyes were warm and after a moment they moved back to her steaming bowl of food. “Tell me when you want to come back. I do not care if it is every day. I will bring you here when you wish it.”

“I appreciate it thank you.” Marissa took another bite of food and in her heart, she felt a pang of guilt. Yes, more than anything she wanted to be Kat’s friend; she was kind and caring to a total stranger. But she also knew herself well enough that it would be hard to reach out to her for a time. The last thing she wanted to be perceived as needy or clingy. It at least gave her a reason, if not motivation, to try and earn a promotion of her own so she would be less of a nuisance to those who have been so gracious as to teleport her to and from the Dark Kingdom. “Until I can figure out what to do about a job, you need to at least let me take care of the cleaning ok?” Her own savings were running out and soon they would probably open her storage unit for auction if she fails to make the monthly payment. "Or maybe you and I can find some recipes to cook together. It would have to be something kind of easy though. Otherwise, I run the risk of losing my glamour before we're done eating." It would be dangerous if all of a sudden her signature flared here in her apartment alerting potential enemies that someone from the Negaverse lived here.

She nodded eagerly. “I have said you can clean. I have no issue sharing the cleaning. It makes life easy for me. But I like easy food with minimal cleaning.” Kat took another bite, trying to figure out if she was being too forceful with her friendship, or too needy or demanding. “I am not that worried, but I do understand about losing the glamour, that would be…difficult, I suppose.”
So long as Marissa still wanted to spend time with her, Kat wouldn’t mind. It was so hard to deal with being alone, and she felt so very selfish now. So very needy.
“Perhaps…I can spend time down there. In there?”
Wherever Negaspace was. It had always seemed to just be Hell to Kat, and she always assumed that it was somewhere underground, and honestly, she felt no desire to change her thoughts about it.
“If you want me to. I get lonely, and if you do to, we can fix that.”

“It’s not exactly the most beautiful place to visit but you’re welcome in the barracks at any time.” Her room wasn’t really all that big, and if it wasn’t that Wolframite crashed in there from time to time she would offer to let Kat spend the night. Then again she could always send him back to his room so she could have a girls' night too. “I’d definitely enjoy the company, and on the plus side at least you won’t ever have to worry about inclement weather.” It could be snowing and they could still spend time together since teleporting was unaffected by storms and such; unless in the Rift. If they took a field trip in there then they would kind of be screwed without Wolframite there with them.

She paused and nodded, a small smile finally breaking over her face, even though Kat tried to hide it, or force it away. It…was nice to feel like she was actually wanted, and this invitation meant more to her than she thought it would.
“I would…enjoy that. I will visit you often then. I can bring food to you so you do not eat limp lettuce. A fair trade, and a wonderful idea, I am pleased with it.”
Kat felt happy at that moment and began eating with a little more vigor. “I will come tomorrow. Tell me what you like to eat, yes?” The quickest way to keep someone was to make food for them, it was an age old truism, and she would cook forever if it meant that she would not lose this friend, because honestly, Kat wasn’t sure if she could survive another loss.

“Honestly? I would be happy with anything as long as it isn’t too greasy or spicy.” For some reason foods cooked in oil had a tendency of making her feel gross or lethargic the next day. But, if cooked in something like an oil-less fryer or air fryer then she was fine. Spicy foods it went without saying that it hurt to eat and upset her stomach easily. Pepperoncini’s were about the hottest thing she could eat. “I should still have some ice cream in my mini-fridge that we could have for dessert if you’d like. I don’t really have much in the way of entertainment, but we can improvise.” Perhaps she should consider getting a few decks of cards or some games to put on her bookshelf. There might be some in her storage locker if she bothered to pull out a few boxes and look.

Kat nodded, making a mental note, and gave a smile at the idea of sharing dessert with her, that would be fun, and entertainment had been far from the front of her mind, but she supposed…that people did have to do more than just…sit and stare at one another…and she doubted that there would be televisions or anything down there…but…
…That would be something fun to look into, perhaps.
“I think that sounds like a good idea. I want that, Marissa. Let’s do that.” She would cook something nice, flavorful but not greasy and not spicy…they would have a good time, and they would become close friends. And she wouldn’t have to be lonely anymore.
“I am pleased to have met you. Thank you for having bad tastes to eat gross food. This has been a good day.” Kat nodded, smiling now. “Thank you.”

“I can’t say I’ve ever had someone randomly walk up and throw my food away before.” It was definitely a shock to the system since, at the time, she didn’t know what she had done to offend the Captian. “But I’m happy you did.” Definitely made a lasting impression and will always be a memorable moment for her to look back on. “Thank you for making me a proper meal and inviting me into your home, Kat. It means a lot and I’m happy to say that I’ve made a new friend.” Before today all she had was Wolframite and Lopezite to talk to, going forward it would definitely be nice to have a female friend to talk about stuff that guys just wouldn’t understand.

Kat beamed and nodded, her eyes flickering back to her food and finally, she began to eat before it cooled too much. She didn’t…have to act or sound so desperate, but she couldn’t really help it…but…she was just called Marissa’s friend…
And that made her feel warmer than anything else had for a long time. So, no, no longer did Kat have to keep trying to force her way into friendship…it was being given.
And she was so very happy for that fact.
…Now all that had to be done was for her not to mess up this chance and lose this friend as she had lost the last one.
