Dr.Beckham

"I'll ask her about him," Beckham said absently, seeking out a knot. "You should see a physio; this tension's caused by the nanites, you know. Sleep with a pillow under your back, it'll alleviate it. I feel very paternal about Galatea, you know, I suppose I'll have to chase after this Hadrian with a large stick."

"Will you then go after that Silva and Aleric as well?" she asked dryly, dropping her head and closing her eyes. He was right again. She ought to make appointments with a local physio or massuese before she crippled herself. Then there would be no field work for -ages-. "You're worse than paternal, Doctor. You're positively over-protective."

"It's to make up for never having children of my own," Beckham said, now rather cheerful. He stepped away. "Well, you're as healthy as can be expected, don't overwork yourself, not that you'll listen one bit, and keep on with your round of medication and call me if there are any changes. Get to a physio; I'll send a letter of recommendation. Will you give Galatea my love?"

"Of course." Serafima straightened and absently rolled her shoulders back and then front, testing the muscle flexibility. Then she reached for her shirt and turned to face him while she slipped it on. The soothing chemicals slipping through her blood stream had her looser, calmer, and she almost looked as if she were about to smile at him. Barely. "Next time give it to her yourself," she suggested. "Schedule your damn proddings for when she's here to support your constant advice."

She paused. "When can I return to work, Doctor?"

The doctor began packing up his bag, and he sighed; however, it didn't seem to be out of exasperation as much as sympathy, and the smile he gave Serafima was genuine and gentle. (Colin, as much as anyone, responded to kindness: he had a heart the approximated texture of a marshmallow.)

"Not yet, Captain," he said. "But the outlook is good. Give yourself another month; you're healing well. With a little bit of luck, you could find yourself back on the field very soon. We're doing all we can. I know you're chafing to return," he added. "I sympathize."

She looked doubtful for an instant and then nodded graciously. "Thank you for your work," she replied. "I will try to follow your guidelines in the meantime."

Which he knew was definitely a lie but at least she was trying to be somewhat ammenable. For once.

He knew well enough not to pat her on the shoulder, but he nodded at her kindly as he picked up his bag and went to the door. "I appreciate that. I am your doctor. Well, until our next appointment, Captain."

If only their appointments always went so well. Beckham chuckled to himself as he let himself out the door.

Once he was gone, Serafima absently locked the door. She had left Galatea's window cracked; the little feien could get back in whenever she liked. Then, rubbing a hand over her face, Serafima climbed the stairs to her bedroom. Her shoeless feet made no noise, automatically skirting the squeaky seventh step. Halfway up the stairs, the still-open shirt slipped from her shoulders and she snatched it before it could land and thus disrupt the pristine, military-level tidiness of her domain. The hot water pipes were calling her name, though, and her steps were sure and fast. It was only sensible to force the muscles loosened by Dr. Beckham's exam to unravel farther under the force of a shower.

As she disappeared into the bathroom adjoining her bedroom, Serafima made a mental note to a) give Galatea the doctor's love and b) find out just what the little feien's plans and activities were. There would be the inevitable third degree when Beckham returned for the next evaluation.

She ignored the echoing words of his refusal to reinstate her. She was good at that.

((Ta da!))
